Cadillac, synonymous with Luxury ? Yes. Synonymous with extended-range electric vehicles? Not so much. All that could change however with the introduction of the Cadillac ELR. The evolution of the Cadillac Converj concept car to the Cadillac ELR production car is Cadillac’s attempt at a luxury coupe with extended-range electric vehicle technology.
Because the development of the ELR is in its initial phases, not too many details are available at this time, with Cadillac opting to announce more later. What we do know for the time being is the ELR will feature an electric propulsion system, comprised of a T-shaped lithium ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. The primary source fueling the car just so happens to be…you guessed it, electricity, which in turn allows for the absence of gasoline consumption and tailpipe emissions. At the point that the battery engine begins to run low, the ELR switches to extended-range mode allowing for the vehicle to travel for hundreds of additional miles.
Cadillac is no stranger to redefining itself, with a series of ambitious and innovative cars that have done well for the company in recent times. Will the Cadillac ELR be added to that list? With the introduction of forward-thinking technology and engineering, Cadillac are certainly hoping so.
