The temperature may be dropping but that doesn’t mean drivers can’t prepare for sunnier days. Ford dealerships across the U.S. are preparing to receive their first shipments of the convertible version of the 2015 Mustang, just in time for the holidays.

“… With available heated seats, remote start and selectable drive modes with a snow/wet setting, Mustang is the perfect offering for the season,” said Melanie Banker, Mustang brand manager. There’s a seat cooling feature available in the new Mustang as well, when its time to drop the top.

Just like the coupe version, the convertible pony car offers a 3.7-liter six-cylinder engine that’s good for 300 horsepower, an upgraded 5.0-liter eight-cylinder that pumps out 435 hp, and a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine making a decent 310 hp to offer.. The addition of this turbo-four power plant is a first for the Mustang.

“Mustangs are made for year-round practicality and enjoyment,” Banker added, “so it’s exciting that customers are taking delivery of their convertible Mustang models – regardless of the season.”

That enjoyment is supported by muscle car’s new fully independent rear suspension, which gives the car cornering capabilities that are vastly improved over the previous generation’s solid rear axle. It doesn’t mean it’s lost anything when it comes to taking off in a straight line, however.

The 2015 Mustang has a built in launch control as standard, letting drivers dial in the perfect revs for a clean takeoff, and a new toy available dubbed “line lock” is there to cater to those who want to warm up the rears for grip … as well as those who like to make big smokey clouds of burned rubber.

Ford reports that the new Mustangs arriving to dealers aren’t staying on the lots much longer than a week, so those looking to get a drop-top ‘Stang and feel the chilly winter wind through their hair better get hustling soon.

Ford’s electric 1,502-hp Mustang dragster burns tires, not race fuel
ford introduces electric mustang cobra jet 1400 prototype

Ford defiantly argued a Mustang doesn't need to have a turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a big V8 under the hood to honor the nameplate's heritage when it introduced the electric Mach-E. It took the emblematic model even further into electrification territory by building a battery-powered, Mustang-based dragster named Cobra Jet.

Hardcore, dyed-in-the-wool Mustang fans will recognize the Cobra Jet name because it denoted a mighty, 7.0-liter V8 engine in the late 1960s. Fast forward to 2020, and it proudly designates an electric dragster whose output checks in at a monstrous 1,400 horsepower and 1,100 pound-feet of instant torque, though Ford revised the first figure in September 2020. Its total output is 1,502 hp, a jaw-dropping number that puts it on par with the Bugatti Chiron.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E will offer Active Drive Assist hands-free driving tech
Ford Active Drive Assist

Ford is serious about making the 2021 Mustang Mach-E its most tech-forward vehicle to date. The electric crossover will inaugurate a technology named Active Drive Assist that will allow drivers to safely and legally take both hands off the steering wheel when the right conditions are met. It won't turn the Mach-E into an autonomous car, however.

Bundled into a suite of electronic driving aids named Co-Pilot360, Active Drive Assist is an evolution of adaptive cruise control with lane-centering designed to take over on divided highways. The system relies on cameras, radars, and sensors to scope out the road ahead, but Ford's approach to the technology is similar to Cadillac's because it only works on pre-mapped highways. This safety-first solution ensures the car knows exactly where there's a bend or a hill, but it also means motorists won't be able to use Active Drive Assist if they're traveling on a road that the technology doesn't know. Ford already mapped over 100,000 miles of highways in all 50 states and in Canada.

Mechanics will use Bosch’s VR tech to learn how to fix the Ford Mustang Mach-E
Ford Mustang Mach E front view

The electric Mustang Mach-E due out by the end of 2020 is Ford's most high-tech car to date, and the mechanics who will work on it will undergo a suitably futuristic training process. The company teamed up with Bosch to create a virtual reality-based training course to teach technicians how to keep the crossover in tip-top condition.

Instead of traveling to a workshop, mechanics will learn how the Mach-E's electric powertrain is put together using an Oculus Quest headset programmed with instructions. Bosch and Ford placed a major focus on the high-voltage electrical system, which was developed specifically for the model and isn't currently found in other cars. VR will teach technicians how to remove, diagnose, repair, and reinstall the lithium-ion battery pack, for example.
