Acer has a massive 45-inch OLED Predator gaming monitor for CES 2023

Acer is debuting a new 45-inch OLED monitor at CES 2023. The Predator X45 is an ultrawide gaming monitor that leverages an OLED panel, and Acer says its capable of insane brightness and contrast that could go up against the best gaming monitors.

For specs, the Predator X45 uses a 45-inch, 21:9 panel. It fits in the same class as a monitor like the Alienware 34 QD-OLED that’s wider than a traditional 16:9 display. It also comes with an aggressive 800R curve, which is very similar to the LG UltraGear 45-inch OLED we saw last December.

It comes with a 3440 x 1440 resolution, which is just below 4K. The standout here is Acer’s image quality claims. The OLED panel is capable of producing 1,000 nits of peak brightness and 98.5% coverage of the DCI-P3 professional color space, according to Acer. Although Acer hasn’t announced any HDR certification yet, OLED usually provides the best HDR monitor experience you can get.

If that’s too large, Acer is also introducing the Predator X27U. This is a 27-inch OLED monitor with a 2560 x 1440 resolution and similar specs as the 45-inch version — namely, 98.5% coverage of DCI-P3 and 1,000 nits of peak brightness.

Although much different in size, the Predator X27U and Predator X45 both support a 240Hz refresh rate and a response time of 0.01 milliseconds according to Acer. They also both support AMD FreeSync Premium to prevent screen tearing and a KVM switch so you can swap your keyboard and mouse between multiple inputs.

For ports, Acer says the Predator X45 comes with a DisplayPort 1.4 connection and two HDMI 2.0 ports. Although HDMI 2.1 is the running standard, HDMI 2.0 can still supply enough bandwidth for the refresh rate and resolution of both displays.

We’ll likely see several similar monitors at CES this year. Dough (formerly known as Eve) announced its 27-inch OLED in December, and LG has 27-inch and 45-inch OLED monitors that are coming soon, as well.

We don’t have an exact release date for Acer’s take on these displays quite yet, though. The company says both will be available in the first half of 2023, likely between April and June. The Predator X45 will retail for $1,700, and the Predator X27U will retail for $1,100.

Acer gets serious about 14-inch gaming laptops
Somebody playing a game on Acer Nitro 16

The 14-inch category of gaming notebooks is getting quite the traction. We recently saw the HP Omen Transcend 14, the company’s first attempt at making a compact yet premium gaming laptop, and a redesign of the popular Zephyrus G14 from Asus. Now, Acer is bringing two new models under its Predator and Nitro brandings.

The new Nitro 14 will be available with the latest AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS or the Ryzen 5 8645HS, which are the same chips as last year but with some added AI capabilities. The 14.5-inch display uses an IPS panel, and customers can choose between either a 1200p and a 1600p resolution model, both of which are capable of 100% sRGB coverage and a 120Hz refresh rate.

Gigabyte just upped its OLED monitor game
Three Gigabyte Aorus monitors over a colorful background.

Gigabyte already makes some of the best gaming monitors, but its upcoming lineup of QD-OLED Aorus displays is arguably even more exciting. However, its rivals Asus and MSI have held an edge in terms of warranty -- something that's crucial for a QD-OLED panel that could be prone to burn-in. Gigabyte now addressed the issue, extending its warranty to match those of the competition.

Gigabyte first showcased the new monitors earlier this year. Initially, they were all given a standard one-year warranty. MSI and Asus also stuck to offering a one-year warranty, but not for long. What follows is an interesting look at how all the top brands in the gaming market affect one another.
