Acer's latest 34-inch monitors limbo under $600

If you want a monitor that takes up almost your entire field of vision, Acer has you covered: they’re rolling out two new 34-inch monitors in the United States this week.

The Acer B346CK, with QHD (3,440 x 1,440 @ 60Hz) resolution will cost you $799.99, while the comparatively low-density Acer B346C with FHD (2,560 x 1,080 @ 60Hz) resolution has a $599.99 MSRP. With those resolutions neither is quite a 4K monitor, these ultrawides are competitively priced considering the size.

Acer is promising a viewing angle of 178 degrees, and high color accuracy — 100 percent sRGB and 6-axis color adjustment. The target audience here is apparently office workers. Acer’s press release focused on viewing multiple design projects or spreadsheets simultaneously.

“Our newest ultra-wide displays were designed for those who want the convenience of viewing graphic intensive content in sharp detail and without having to scroll to see the entire picture,” Ronald Lau said on behalf of the company, giving you an idea of the focus here (Productivity, not gaming).

The monitor comes with a stand that allows you to tilt the screen 25 degrees up or -5 degrees down, turn the screen 60 degrees to the right or left, and adjust the height up to 5.9 inches up or down. The monitor can also be mounted on your wall, if saving desk space is a priority.

There are a few features beyond just display Both lines come with built-in speakers, for example, as well as a USB 3.0 hub. This could be useful for laptop users, who can connect their device to the monitor and all peripherals with just two plugs.

Acer also mentions picture-in-picture capability, which lets you impose a virtual display over your current one. The monitors both come with a three year warranty, and should be available soon at major retailers.

I’ve used ultrawide monitors for a decade. Here’s why I’ve given up on them
Lies of P on the KTC G42P5.

I've been using an ultrawide monitor for a decade. I bought in early, sometime back in 2013, picking up LG's first ultrawide display: the 29EA93. It's terrible by today's standards, but I fell in love immediately.

I was using Pro Tools a lot at the time, and the extra screen real estate was a godsend for seeing more of my window. It also helped that I could pull up two browser windows side by side to multitask, as well as enjoy the deeper immersion in games. It didn't matter that the screen was only 29 inches, or that it only had a resolution of 2,560 x 1,080. I was sold; 21:9 was for me.

Acer’s new gaming laptop bring Nvidia RTX 40-series GPUs under $1,000
Two Acer gaming laptops over a dark blue background.

You can find Nvidia's RTX 40-series graphics cards in some of the best gaming laptops, but the downside is that they're all expensive, if not overpriced. Previously, that meant you'd be forced to choose between getting something affordable or getting access to Nvidia's GPU cheat code -- DLSS 3. Now, there's finally some hope on the horizon, as Acer is launching a budget-friendly laptop that can still run modern games. We're talking about the Acer Nitro V 15.

The new laptop will be available in a few different configurations, each equipped with Intel's latest 13th-Gen CPUs, including either Core i5 or Core i7 models. All of them also come with a 15.6-inch 144Hz display. While every configuration also features a Nvidia graphics card, not all of those GPUs are equally thrilling. The cheapest model, priced at $700, features a Core i5-13420H CPU and an RTX 2050 GPU. This comes paired with just 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

Why I couldn’t live without an ultrawide gaming monitor
Spider-Man running on the LG UltraGear OLED 45.

The debate between a dual-monitor setup and ultrawide is one for the ages (or, at least, the last decade), but I firmly fall into the ultrawide camp. That's why it surprised me to see my colleague Jon Martindale sing the praises of a dual-monitor setup over an ultrawide. I have to push back.

Martindale makes some valid points, from the cost of ultrawide monitors to the pixel density of such a large display. But, for the way I use my monitor, I couldn't imagine using anything else. Here's why.
