AMD RX 6000 graphics cards could get a 10% price hike soon

AMD could be increasing the price of its RX 6000 graphics cards for add-in board (AIB) partners. A post in an AIB forum reports that AMD is raising the price for partners by 10%, citing issues with manufacturing costs, and that extra cost could be passed on to customers.

The post comes from the BoardChannels forum (via VideoCardz). It says that RX 6000 prices are up 10% across the board, which represents anywhere from a $20 to $40 increase in price per GPU. This is the price increase for AIB partners, so it doesn’t necessarily mean all RX 6000 GPUs will become 10% more expensive suddenly.

They could, though. A recent report on the GPU market found that Nvidia and AMD graphics cards are still selling for more than twice their list price, despite relatively stable supply over the past few months. YouTube channel HardwareUnboxed looked into pricing changes on the secondhand market between October and November, and it found an average 9% increase for AMD RX 6000 GPUs.

According to the BoardChannels post, the price increase will come with the next shipment of RX 6000 graphics cards. Partners could start increasing prices now, or it could take a few weeks. It’s also possible that partners don’t raise their prices at all, though that seems unlikely given the trend of GPU prices over the past year.

The cause of the increase comes down to manufacturing costs at chipmaker TSMC. RX 6000 graphics cards are based on TSMC’s N7 manufacturing process, which is the same node that AMD uses for its Ryzen 5000 processors. Right now, it doesn’t seem like prices on processors are increasing, despite using the same node. In fact, many Ryzen 5000 chips are discounted ahead of Black Friday.

AMD hasn’t confirmed the price increase. We’ve reached out and will update this story when we hear back. Unfortunately, we’re dealing with closed-door conversations between AMD and its board partners, so we may never know if the price increase martializes.

The GPU pricing crisis continues to get worse. Prices are up across the board, and companies like Nvidia continue to warn that supply issues will persist until the end of 2022. It could be a year or more before the GPU market returns to normal, and it has already been a year since the GPU shortage began.

AMD just announced the graphics card everyone has been waiting for
AMD announces RX 7600 XT at CES 2024.

AMD just launched the RX 7600 XT at CES 2024. It's a graphics card that makes sense, and one that AMD fans have been waiting on ever since the launch of the original RX 7600. It might not do enough in the hotly contested market of graphics cards around $300, however.

Between the RX 7600 and the RX 7600 XT, not much has changed. These two graphics cards are based on the same GPU, and they come with the same number of cores. The XT model, however, boosts the clock speed by up to 10%, and it comes with a higher power draw at up to 190 watts.

AMD might have a new graphics card next month, too
AMD RX 7600 on a pink background.

We weren't expecting to hear much about AMD's graphics cards in January, but a new rumor suggests we'll see a new GPU in just a few weeks. AMD is prepping the RX 7600 XT, according to Benchlife's sources (via VideoCardz). It's apparently an updated version of AMD's budget-focused RX 7600, sporting more VRAM and perhaps a better die.

To understand the rumored card, we have to look at the RX 7600 we already have. It's an 8GB graphics card based on the Navi 33 GPU. The card already maxes out the capabilities of the GPU with 32 Compute Units (CUs), equaling 2,048 cores. If AMD is preparing an RX 7600 XT, there are two possibilities. Either it will use the same maxed-out Navi 33 GPU or a stripped-down version of the Navi 32 GPU we see in cards like the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT. Hopefully, the latter is true. Although the RX 7600 is a solid 1080p graphics card, it remains about 30% slower than the next step up in AMD's lineup.

Graphics cards are selling again, and that worries me
The RTX 4080 logo on a pink background.

GPUs are selling again. Ever since the GPU shortage, graphics cards haven't been selling well, but a recent report from Jon Peddie Research shows that trend is changing. The report shows that GPU shipments increased by 16.8% compared to last quarter, which is a positive sign.  Still, I can't help but feel worried about what this could mean for GPU prices.

Both AMD and Nvidia came out of the pandemic highs with new ranges of graphics cards. Nvidia set the bar with pricing higher than we've ever seen before, and AMD quickly followed, pricing its cards just low enough to be considered a value by comparison. That's made the price of building a new gaming PC higher than it's ever been.
