Microsoft’s open-source Chromium Edge browser has entered beta. Here’s how to get it

Earlier in 2019, Microsoft shocked the world and announced it would be building a new cross-platform web browser based on Google’s open-source Chromium project. After initial leaks, the company eventually launched two Edge development insider “channels” which allowed Windows and MacOS users to download and test out public preview versions of the browser for free.

Known as “Canary” and “Dev,” each of these two initial insider channels is constantly getting updated with fresh and exciting elements like a natural read-aloud feature. These channels are known to be buggy, however, as they are mainly designed for Microsoft to get feedback from users.

Recently, though, Microsoft launched a new “Beta” channel as a third download option. This version of the browser is a much more stable and intended for use in daily workflows. So, if you’re wanting to test out Edge Chromium for yourself, here’s how you can download it today.

Visit Microsoft’s Website

According to Microsoft, Edge Chromium has been downloaded over one million times. If you want to join in, the first step in is to head to this website. From there, you’ll see download links and descriptions of each “channel” which we previously mentioned above. You’ll need to decide which version is best for you.

If you want the latest browser-features from Microsoft, the Canary channel is the one to download from. This channel is updated on a daily basis with new features but is also the most unstable and buggy. The Dev channel, meanwhile, is updated on a weekly basis and will cause fewer issues with your computer.

Finally, there is the Beta channel, which was launched on Tuesday, August 20. This is the best version to download if you’re not the technical type, or won’t submit feedback to Microsoft. It is the most stable and is best for everyday use. In this version, you’ll enjoy features like customizing the new tab page, stopping websites from tracking your browsing habits, and a collection feature for saving favorite websites.

Hit the download button

After you’ve decided which channel of Edge Chromium is right for you, the next step is to hit the download button. Keep in mind, the key difference between Edge Chromium and regular Microsoft Edge is that it is available across different types of platforms. So, if your system is running Windows all the download links on Microsoft’s website will give you a Windows-based .exe installer.

Edge Chromium is available on Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows 7. It’s even available on MacOS.  To download a version for these operating systems, press the down arrow next to the big blue download box, and choose your platform. Make sure to note the location where you’ve saved it. You’ll also need to accept Microsoft’s Software terms before proceeding.

Run the installer, and customize your experience

Once your download is complete, navigate to the location where you’ve saved the installer. Double click to open it, and sit back as your system installs the Chromium version of Edge. The process shouldn’t take too long, and typically takes less than 3 minutes.

Once installed, you’re free to customize the browser to your own liking. An on-screen setup guide will prompt you. You can choose different types of layouts for the new tab page, sync your bookmarks, and more. Our hands-on guide dives into some of the new features.

How to uninstall Microsoft Edge
A laptop running Microsoft Edge.

Although the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge is the company's flagship browser, you may want to learn how to uninstall Edge. Perhaps you've run into problems with Edge that you're not sure how to fix. Or maybe you've never once used it, but it still keeps popping up occasionally. It doesn't matter that Edge, according to some, is now comparable to Google Chrome -- sometimes, you just want it gone.

No matter the cause, if you want to uninstall Microsoft Edge, it can be done. Here's how to remove Microsoft Edge once and for all.
Uninstalling Microsoft Edge through Apps & Features
If you installed Microsoft Edge yourself, you may be able to remove it through Windows Settings. This will only apply if you're using the beta, developer, or Canary version of Edge. If not, it's still worth a quick check, but the method may not work.
Step 1: Enter the Start menu
To enter the Start menu, click the Windows logo on the bottom-left corner of your screen -- it's located on the taskbar. You can also find the Windows button on your keyboard, similarly placed near the bottom-left, close to the space bar.
Step 2: Enter the Apps & Features section
With the Start menu open, click the Gear icon directly above the power button. This will take you to the Windows Settings. Alternatively, you can simply type in "settings" with the Start menu open. Windows will direct you to the right app.

Microsoft brings Windows 11 design improvements to Edge browser
The Microsoft Edge browser on a flat surface.

Microsoft's Edge browser is getting a visual overhaul to make it look consistent with the upcoming release of the Windows 11 operating system this fall. The Windows 11-inspired UI will bring features such as a thinner, more consistent scrollbar overlay to the browser as well as updates to the title bar icons. Though the features aren't available to all Windows users, those who sign up to beta test Microsoft's browser releases through the Edge Insider program can experience the new design elements ported from Windows 11 today.

If you're curious and want to try out Edge's new visual changes, be sure to sign up for Microsoft's Edge Insider Program and download the Canary Channel build. Keep in mind that Canary versions get updated nightly, and you may experience bugs or glitches. The browser is available for both Windows and Mac users.

The PDF reader in Microsoft Edge is getting a big update
Microsoft Edge browser open on a laptop.

The Microsoft 365 roadmap has revealed the PDF reader in Edge will soon be getting a big update. The future update is centered around free-form highlighting, and overall improvements with reading scanned PDF documents.

Coming in Microsoft Edge version 95, Microsoft hopes these features can improve the viewing and markup experience for Edge users. Microsoft also specifically says that viewing and markup will be improved because of freeform highlighters. For those unfamiliar with the terminology, this should allow Edge users to highlight PDF sections where they might not have had previous access to comment.
