New icon for Microsoft Edge browser revealed in online Easter Egg hunt

The Microsoft Edge browser has a new icon, as the software moves further away from its Internet Explorer roots and into a modern version based on Google’s open-source Chromium engine.

Microsoft did not simply reveal the new logo though. Instead, it was the treasure at the end of an online Easter Egg hunt with several puzzles and clues that started on the official Microsoft Edge sub-Reddit. Steps in the process included rendering an icon as a 3D object and a secret surfing game.

The surfing game, the last step in the treasure hunt, is accessible through edge://surf on the Microsoft Edge browser. It resembles SkiFree, a classic game that was in Microsoft’s Entertainment Pack 3 for Windows that was released in 1991. For those interested in trying it out, the object of the game is to use the W, A, S, and D keys to navigate through the obstacles, while picking up speed boosts along the way.

Players who completed the surfing game and the online Easter Egg hunt, and those who waited for the results from the others who did so, found the new Microsoft Edge icon, which represents a new age for the company’s internet browser.

Microsoft saw its Internet Explorer lose to Google’s Chrome in the browser wars and the upgrade to Microsoft Edge did not help. This led to the decision to rebuild Microsoft Edge using Google’s Chromium engine, and the first beta of the project, released in August, showed promise. A bug bounty program for Chromium Edge was launched in the same month, inviting cybersecurity experts to identify vulnerabilities in the browser for rewards of up to $30,000.

Several new features for the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge may help it challenge Google Chrome’s dominance in the internet browser space. These include Collections, which allows users to quickly gather a list of webpages in a central hub with a click of a button, an updated Share functionality for improved integration with Windows, and better compatibility for webpages designed for older browsers.

The release date of the final version of the new Microsoft Edge remains unknown. However, with the reveal of the new logo, it is possible that an announcement is in store for the Microsoft Ignite conference, which will run from November 4 to November 8, 2019 in Orlando.

Aaron received an NES and a copy of Super Mario Bros. for Christmas when he was four years old, and he has been fascinated…
I finally switched to Microsoft Edge for this one feature
The Microsoft Edge browser on a flat surface.

Microsoft Edge has gotten increasingly better over the years, but I've stuck with Google Chrome -- perhaps by habit, if nothing else. After all, a web browser is the kind of application I don't want to think about. That's why the flashier features of recent updates to Chrome, Edge, or even Arc haven't swayed me. I don't use Copilot, Collections, or even tab groups. That left me defaulted to Chrome.

I'm now using Microsoft Edge, though -- and it's not because of the most common complaints about Chrome, such as its well-documented memory usage. No, no. My reason for deciding to leave Chrome for Edge is based on a feature that was actually launched way back in 2022. For the longest time, I ignored the Edge sidebar -- after all, the less clutter in my web browser, the better.

Microsoft is adding a controversial app to Windows 11
Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 sitting on a table.

A new Windows 11 build is rolling out in Microsoft's Beta channel, and it includes an app that's been caught up in some controversy. Build 22635.3646 includes the PC Manager app for devices in China by default. This app is already available through the Microsoft Store, but the update suggests the app might be part of Windows 11 more broadly soon.

PC Manager falls in the category of "system optimizers" along the lines of the  Razer Cortex Game Booster. It cleans out temporary files, frees memory that's not being used, and digs deep into your hard drive to clean out unused files. According to Microsoft, it can even "reduce ads and app pop-up interruptions." An system optimizer from Microsoft sounds great as an official release in Windows 11.

Real-time video translation comes to Microsoft Edge

Following up on the massive Copilot+ announcements from yesterday, Microsoft's AI toolset keeps getting bigger and bigger. As part of its annual Microsoft Build develop conference, Microsoft has announced an update to Edge that grants it the power to translate videos to different languages in real time.

Microsoft affirms that the upcoming AI feature will translate videos on the browser to multiple languages using subtitles and/or dubbing in real time. Microsoft has not said if the option will be set by default or where the user can go to turn this feature on or off, but it could be somewhere in Settings.
