Samsung’s fascinating new monitors can connect wirelessly via pogo pins

The Link monitors connected on a table.

Update: This post has been revised to reflect changes made to Samsung’s product description about The Link.

Samsung announced a mysterious new monitor at CES 2024 called The Link — and even though it wasn’t seen in person, they looked absolutely fascinating in the photo that was shared.

Very little information was given about them, but here’s what we do know: The Link monitors are “the world’s thinnest and lightest 4K 32-inch LED monitors,” and can “daisy-chain” together using pogo pins. That means connecting these monitors together would be completely wireless. The problem Samsung is attempting to solve is to make the display in multi-monitor setups less “uneven” and “mismatched.”

That is — that’s what Samsung originally published about The Link. The company quickly sent out an edited description to journalists, removing the claims that it was world’s thinnest and lightest, saying now only that is “super-thin.” More than that, any mention of pogo pins has been removed as well, only stating now that The Link monitors can connect to each “without a separate cable.”

Samsung has been tight-lipped about this product, so it’s hard to know how to take the corrections. Lest you think this is merely a concept, though, The Link did win an Innovation Award from CES as a real product, where is where the description was originally posted. For now, we’ll have to wait to hear more until we know if The Link uses pogo pins to connect or not.

Based on the one photo that was provided, The Link has an interesting design too. The screens look remarkably thin, with a flat metal base. The monitors can then line up with one another — presumably by pogo pins located in the bottom chin, which also acts as the stand. It’s just a rendering, of course, but if they end up with a design like this, they’ll certainly be unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

A lot more needs to be known about The Link, but I’ll always appreciate sleek and fresh designs that do something new. Obviously, we’ll be waiting to hear more about The Link in the future, including its price and release date.

In addition to The Link, Samsung announced two new QD-OLED gaming monitors and a 3D gaming monitor concept.

This OLED portable monitor can fold right in half
The ZenScreen Fold next to a laptop.

Laptops with foldable screens have been around for years, but a portable monitor might end up being a more approachable use of the technology. At CES 2024, Asus announced the ZenScreen Fold, a 17.3-inch OLED monitor that can fold up into exactly half that size.

It looks very similar to the ZenBook Fold 17 launched in 2022, but a little slimmed down in thickness and sporting a silver aluminum chassis. It's 0.38 inches thick when unfolded (and 0.76 inches when folded) and weighs 2.65 pounds. In a sense, it'll feel like carrying around a second small laptop with you, but once you sit down and unfold that screen to see its glorious expanse of screen real estate, I'm guessing you won't mind having lugged it in your bag.

This surprise 480Hz QHD OLED gaming monitor just won CES
The Asus 480Hz OLED gaming monitor set up at a press event.

Well, I didn't see that one coming.

Asus may have brought the first true 480Hz OLED gaming monitor to CES 2024. The ROG Swift PG27AQDP is a 1440p resolution OLED monitor that comes with a staggering 480Hz refresh rate -- that alone tells you what you need to know about this beast.

Alienware’s new second-gen QD-OLED monitors are stunning
The Alienware 32 4K QD-OLED on a table with a game on the screen.

The Alienware 34 QD-OLED took the world by storm. As the first really great OLED gaming monitor, it had little in the way of competition.

But in 2024, that's not true. And to keep its lead, Alienware has launched two new QD-OLED gaming monitors that take things even further. There is now a 32-inch 4K model (AW3225QF) and a 27-inch QHD model (AW2725DF), both of which use the second-generation QD-OLED tech from Samsung Display. I got to see both models in person at a preview event ahead of CES 2024, and I came away extremely excited for these new gaming monitors.
