After a month of bugs, the Windows 10 October 2018 Update is finally here

The Windows 10 October 2018 Update initially made its way to the public on October 2, but it was quickly pulled back due to a bug which deleted files for a subset of consumers who were quick to upgrade. After more thoroughly investigating and resolving all of those related issues, Microsoft is announcing the update is now again rolling out to consumers starting Tuesday, November 13.

Just as with prior releases, Microsoft is still encouraging for consumers to wait for the Windows 10 October 2018 Update to properly arrive on Windows Update before proceeding with any installations. This is part of a “more measured approach” which slows the rollout process and enables the company to study the health of all devices before installing the update. According to Microsoft, this also means if the update is not ready for your PC due to any compatibility issues, it won’t show up or install, even if you continue to manually check.

To further ensure a bug-free experience, Microsoft also worked on the feedback from its Windows Insiders who were beta testing the update. This is not an uncommon process, and it has been leveraged in the past before the release of the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

“We have taken time to closely monitor feedback and diagnostic data from our Windows Insiders and from the millions of devices on the Windows 10 October Update, and we have no further evidence of data loss. Based on this data, today we are beginning the re-release of the October Update by making it available via media and to advanced users who seek to manually check for updates,” Microsoft said.

Whatever you do, don’t install the Windows 11 September update

Microsoft has warned users in a post on its support blog that the September KB5043145 update, released on Thursday, is causing some Windows 11 PCs to restart multiple times, show the blue screen of death, or even freeze.

The problems in the recent update affect those on the 22H2 or 23H3 version of Windows 11. However, Microsoft said it is investigating the issue and will provide more information when it's available. Microsoft confirmed: "After installing this update, some customers have reported that their device restarts multiple times or becomes unresponsive with blue or green screens. According to the reports, some devices automatically open the Automatic Repair tool after repeated restart attempts. In some cases, BitLocker recovery can also be triggered."

A forced Windows update is coming next month

Windows 11 version 22H2 will reach its end of servicing next month, and Microsoft has announced a forced update to 23H2 for October 8. This means machines running 22H2 (Home and Pro editions) will stop receiving updates after next month, leaving them vulnerable to security threats. Enterprise, Education, and Internet of Things (IoT) Enterprise editions running version 21H2 will also receive the automatic update.

In a post on the Windows Message Center, Microsoft urges users to update before October 8 or participate in the automatic update to keep themselves "protected and productive" since the monthly Patch Tuesday updates are "critical to security and ecosystem health."

Your Windows 11 computer is about to get even better, thanks to the latest KB5041587 update. As Microsoft mentioned in a support page post, this update makes Android file sharing easier, fixes bugs in File Explorer, and adds performance tweaks to Windows Narrator and the voice access feature.

The new update allows you to share files more quickly with your Android device using the Microsoft Phone Link app. You'll need to install the app on your Android device and your Windows 11 computer and go through the setup process, which includes giving quite a few permissions. When sharing from your PC, choose the Phone Link as the destination app, and when sharing from your Android device, select the link for the Windows app as your sharing option.
