Apex Legends’ Arenas mode turns the game into Counter Strike — and it’s great

Every few months, Respawn Entertainment claims that Apex Legends is getting its biggest update yet. It’s usually not an exaggeration; the battle royale game continues to grow with each passing season. However, it’s hard not to roll one’s eyes when the studio starts hyping up its next chapter as a game-changer.

This time around, Respawn isn’t lying. Apex Legends is receiving its most significant evolution to date for its ninth season, titled Legacy. In addition to a new jetpack-wielding character and the game’s first bow weapon, the multiplayer shooter is getting a new permanent mode called Arenas. It’s a complete change from the base game we’ve known for years. Arenas isn’t a battle royale mode at all; it’s a team-based elimination mode that looks a lot like Counter Strike: Global Offensive or Valorant.

After some hands-on time with the new update, it’s clear that Apex Legends is ready to grow past the trend that spawned it. The Arenas mode might just transform it from “one of the best battle royale games” to “one of the best shooters,” period.

Apex Legends meets Counter Strike

Apex Legends’ new Arenas mode is quite different from the normal battle royale experience, but it will be familiar for many shooter fans. Rather than throwing 100 players onto a huge map, it’s a team-based three-versus-three elimination mode with short rounds. The goal is to be the first team to win three rounds. Sound familiar? Just wait for this next bit.

Each round, players get a certain amount of in-game currency to spend on weapons, abilities, and items. Players can buy up to two weapons each round and upgrade them with the kind of mods that one would usually have to scavenge for. Saving some money one round means that they’ll bank some extra cash for the next. By round three or four, players will be able to go all-out with a full arsenal if they’ve managed their credits well.

Yep, it’s Counter Strike.

Apex Legends – Legacy Launch Trailer

The obvious similarities might elicit some early giggles from the jaded genre faithful early on, but Arenas is no joke. It’s a much faster take on other games in the genre that puts Apex Legends’ best mechanics to good use. Respawn Entertainment sees Apex as a shooting game above all else and Arenas emphasizes just how great the core mechanics of the game are when divorced from the battle royale structure.

There’s one element that does carry over from the main game. Rounds aren’t timed, but they do feature a closing circle that shrinks the battlefield every minute or so. That keeps games moving very quickly and encourages players to take full advantage of Apex’s excellent mobility. Rather than waiting around to scout out our adversaries, my teammates and I would literally slide into firefights with guns blazing.

Character abilities are also fair game in this mode, though players will have to buy their ultimate or individual powers each round like they would a weapon. It’s a great fit for the “economy” shooter model. When the odds start to stack up against one team, they can go all-in on abilities to get the upper hand.

It helps that Respawn has done great work over the years when it comes to creating diverse skills for each character. In my first round, a teammate immediately dropped Horizon’s launchpad next to a tall building. That allowed all three of us to jump on top and spot our enemies on the ground below. The next round, I knew to buy a sniper instead of a shotgun so I could make the most of our character loadout.

Set up for success

What’s most notable here is that this isn’t a brand new game. Arenas exists within the standard Apex Legends launcher. Respawn could have released this as an entirely new, stand-alone product as it plans to do with its upcoming mobile game. Instead, it’s turning Apex Legends into a one-stop shop for competitive shooting fans. The expansion past battle royale sets the game up for success. Even if Fortnite-style shooters fall out of fashion in the next few years, Apex Legends could very well survive thanks to clean pivots like this. It might just be the last one standing when the trend finally fades.

As someone who’s always been intimidated by the skill ceiling of games like Counter Strike, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed what Arenas offers already. It feels a little easier to pick up, or at least more immediately fun to tool around with. The bottom line is that both moving and shooting have always felt great in Apex Legends. The battle royale structure has always been an excuse to spend time with some genuinely pleasurable mechanics. With Arenas, I get to spend less time hunting for weapons and more time actually firing them.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor release date pops up on Steam ahead of Game Awards
Cal Kestis with BD-1 droid on his shoulder.

The release date of the highly anticipated Star Wars game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor leaked on the game's official Steam page.
A Steam Page for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor went live with this release date information on Monday morning, seemingly ahead of a heavily rumored appearance at The Game Awards. The store page description reveals more details about Star Wars Jedi: Survivor as well as its Deluxe Edition, which contains cosmetics that make protagonist Cal Kestis look like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo and the pre-order bonus with a costume, Lightsaber, and Blaster based on Obi-Wan.

The "About This Game" section also provides more details on the game. Narratively, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's Steam page explains that "Cal is driven to make a stand during the galaxy’s darkest times -- but how far is he willing to go to protect himself, his crew, and the legacy of the Jedi Order?" On the gameplay side of things, new Force abilities, Lightsaber fighting styles, and enemies to take down are teased. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor looks like it will be a galaxy-trotting adventure like its predecessor the description hints that there will be lots of planets to explore and that they'll be bigger and have more secrets than the ones in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
EA and Respawn Entertainment have been relatively quiet regarding Star Wars Jedi: Survivor since announcing the game in May, so it's exciting to get a lot of new information about the game like its sooner-than-expected release date. If the rumors are true, this may have deflated the hype from one of The Game Awards 2022's big reveals.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on March 15, 2023.

Apex Legends’ newest character is a deadly sniper with an adorable bat pal
Vantage stands with her sniper rifle in Apex Legends.

Ahead of the start of Apex Legends Season 14: Hunted on August 9, EA and Respawn Entertainment went into more detail about the new Legend coming to the game at the start of the season. Her name is Vantage, and she's shaping up to be a deadly sniper with an adorable bat companion.
Vantage's backstory, which we got to see a bit of in July, consists of her growing up alone with her mother on the ice planet of Pagos. Her mother is secretly an escaped prisoner, and when Vantage almost dies exploring an abandoned ship, her mother has to turn herself in so she can get medical help for her daughter. Following this, Vantage enters the Apex Games in order to spread awareness about her mother's capture and eventually free her one day.
Vantage's passive ability is called Spotter's Lens. With that, she can scan an enemy's Legend name, team size, range, and shield rarity from a distance. Her Tactical Ability is called Echo Relocation, and she can use it to send Echo to a spot on the map before jetpacking to it. Thankfully, Respawn developers confirmed that players can't kill Echo, so players don't have to worry about putting this cute companion in danger. Her Ultimate ability is called Sniper's Mark, and it's one of the most unique ones in the game. Vantage summons her custom sniper rifle with Sniper's Mark. It has five bullets, and if she hits an enemy with it, Vantage will highlight their squad for ten seconds. Damage from her sniper rifle and allies scales up with consecutive hits, and all the shots don't need to be made at once, so Vantage can be quite deadly if a player knows how to use her properly. Apex Legends is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. Season 14: Hunted begins August 9.

Apex Legends’ next season increases the level cap and removes self-revive
Relic is a new part of Kings Canyon's rework in Apex Legends Season 14.

Season 14 of Apex Legends is almost upon us, so Respawn Entertainment and EA revealed some of the major reworks coming to the game with when the Hunted season begins. Namely, the developers highlighted the redesigned Kings Canyon, increased level cap, and balance updates like the removal of self-revive.
In 2020, Loba blew up Skull Town in Kings Canyon. Now, the entire map is seeing a rework as part of Season 14 to improve the pacing and balance of matches on the map. Skull Town is now called Relic and is a bit bigger, the Cage was reworked to be a little lower and more vulnerable, Hillside's interiors were removed, and Broken Relay is now called Basin and got new buildings. Those, along with the other visual update Kings Canyon got, should make this old Apex Legends map feel brand new again.

Another big change is coming to account levels. Previously, there were 500 levels for players to work their way through. Starting with Season 14, players can work their way to level 500 three more times, technically increasing the level cap to 2000. This means that players will now be able to earn 544 Apex Packs and an Heirloom by leveling up. The start of Season 14 will also introduce some notable balance changes to Apex Legends, as is to be expected.
Some notable changes are that SMGs and pistols have a new laser sight attachment, the Wingman will now use sniper ammo, the Spitfire will now light ammo, the EVA-8 will see an increased fire rate, handling, and reload speed, and more. Most notably though, self-revive is getting removed. This is complicated by a change to Gold Equipment perks, including a new one for the Backpack called Deep Pockets that increases the number of medical supplies players can carry.Apex Legends is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. Season 14 begins on August 9.
