All Assassin’s Creed games in order, by release date and chronologically

Basim about to assassinate a dude.
Ubisoft

After a humble beginning in 2007, Assassin’s Creed has become not only one of Ubisoft’s most successful franchises but one of the biggest in gaming as a whole. Originally meant to be a new Prince of Persia game, the series was instead allowed to be a new IP that focused on a secret order of assassins in a centuries-long conflict with the Knights Templar.

What made the series so appealing was the setup. Through the use of a fictional machine called the Animus, people could relive the memories of their ancestors to learn secrets from the past to help in the present. That opened up endless possibilities for places and time periods the series could go. With over a dozen games in the series and counting, we’ve been all across history at this point.

Even if you’re a huge history buff, keeping track of the timeline of Assassin’s Creed is no easy feat. You can’t even rely on the numbers in the title guiding you along the way, either. Whether you want to play the game from the earliest point in history to the most recent, or simply go in release order, we’ve laid out the timeline for you.

The first Assassin’s Creed came out in 2007, with the sequel coming in 2009. Since that point we had yearly releases up until 2015 (and sometimes multiple in a year) where we had our next two-year gap in mainline titles. Now, the series is straddling the line between the classic formula and more recent RPG-heavy systems to mixed results.

This is a full list of Assassin’s Creed games currently released, year by year.

  • Assassin’s Creed (2007)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Altaïr’s Chronicles (2008)

All Assassin’s Creed games in chronological order

Key art for Assassin's Creed III: Remastered
Ubisoft

Playing the Assassin’s Creed series in chronological order started getting very complicated after the first few entries. Each game jumps decades or centuries forward and backward from one another in the timeline, making it quite challenging to know which games go where in the grand scheme of things. We’re talking about a timeline that spans the early 400s B.C. up to the early 1900s across nearly every continent. Some games even have some overlap to make it even more complex.

If you’re eager to sharpen your hidden blade and stealth-kill your way through this series from its earliest point to the latest in the timeline, we’ll mark your targets for you. Note that we will ignore the smaller mobile releases here that are included in the complete list above.

  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (431 B.C-422 B.C.)
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins (49 B.C.-44 B.C.)
  • Assassin’s Creed Mirage (861)
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (872-878)
  • Assassin’s Creed (1191)
  • Assassin’s Creed II (1476-1499)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (1499-1507)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (1511-1512)
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China (1526-1532)
  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (1715-1722)
  • Assassin’s Creed Rogue (1752-1760)
  • Assassin’s Creed III (1754-1783)
  • Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation (1765-1777)
  • Assassins Creed Unity (1789-1794)
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India (1841)
  • Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (1868)
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia (1917-1918)

All Kingdom Hearts games in order, by release date and chronologically
kingdom hearts 4 nomura interview revelations 3 shibuya

For some, the Kingdom Hearts franchise has some of the best games of all time. For others, they're an incomprehensible mess of subtitles, timelines, and multiple people having the same name. In reality, both are true, but the latter can be easily solved by simply playing through the games in the proper order.

Of course, Square Enix hasn't made that easy, with a naming convention that defies all logic and games that jump between almost every platform. Thankfully, the games have since been consolidated into a bundle on consoles and Steam to at least put them all in one package to get players ready for when Kingdom Hearts 4 eventually comes out. If you have that game on your most-anticipated upcoming games list, or simply have always wanted to dive in but don't know where to start, let us be your guiding key.

All Zelda games in order, by release date and chronologically
Zelda with the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom.

From its humble beginnings on the NES to the latest 3D adventure, The Legend of Zelda games are undeniably some of the best games of all time. What began as a little adventure game about a boy in a green tunic rescuing a princess has turned into a multigenerational series with tons of games across all of Nintendo's hardware. Whether you love the 2D games or massive 3D adventures, it is a tough task to pick the best Zelda game.

What's even harder is understanding the Zelda timeline. After the first two games, it wasn't clear if the subsequent games were connected at all. Each game has a different incarnation of Link, and usually Zelda and Ganon as well, but everything else appeared to only have loose ties, if any. For years, fans worked to try and make sense of the timeline as games came out, but eventually, Nintendo set the record straight with the official timeline in the The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia book (which has been converted into a handy wiki). However, since that book's publication, we've had a few new games come out that we need to find a way to place in the existing timeline ... or should we say timelines.

All Halo games in order, by release date and chronologically
jen taylor cortana interview halo 3

We were first introduced to the world of Halo with the launch of the Xbox in 2001. That one game became an instant classic and one of the best original Xbox games ever made, allowing Xbox to compete with the likes of PlayStation and Nintendo. Thanks to the massive universe that game set up, plus the ending teasing more to the Master Chief's story, it was only a matter of time before we got more Halo games. Over 20 years later, there are about a dozen games in the series, but only five are numbered. If you were to simply follow the mainline games, you would be missing out on huge swaths of the story.

Sure, Halo is just as much about multiplayer as it is the campaign, but the best Halo games have both a strong multiplayer offering and a compelling story. With lore dating back before the dawn of humanity and stretching into the far future, there's a lot more to Halo than just shooting aliens. Let's go full circle and list all the Halo games in order of release date and chronologically.
