Babylon’s Fall is a multiplayer, live service hack n’ slash game

The new Platinum Games title, Babylon’s Fall made an appearance at Square Enix’s E3 2021’s showcase. The new footage revealed more gameplay and the plot for the new hack n’ slash/character action game title. It also revealed that it will be a multiplayer, live service experience.

BABYLON’S FALL | E3 2021 Trailer

Babylon’s Fall is a new game from the creators of Bayonetta. It was originally announced at E3 2018. In Babylon’s Fall you’ll be making your way to and then climbing Babylon’s Tower. You can choose whether to conquer this task alone or with a group of up to three allies.

Like many of Platinum Games’ titles, Babylon’s Fall is of the hack n’ slash genre. Players can apparently choose between different builds of characters, with some wielding swords, while others can utilize giant hammers and crossbows.

The game is being developed as a live-service title and will be regularly updated with new content after its initial release.

The new trailer also revealed that there will be a closed beta that potential players can sign up for on the official Babylon’s Fall website. While no release date is confirmed, the game is slated to release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Outriders: Worldslayer bucks the live service trend
outriders worldslayer preview 4k 04

Last year, Outriders bucked the live service trend of most modern shooters. Its content updates were rare but significant, instead of thinly stretched additions that begged players to not put the game down. That approach meant I stopped playing Outriders months ago, but its Worldslayer expansion is regaining my attention.
Harkening back to the classic era of DLC, a meaty expansion called Outriders: Worldslayer is on the way. Launching in June, Worldslayer will significantly expand Outriders’ story and extend the endgame in a way that no Outriders update has yet. Developer People Can Fly gave me an overview of what the expansion will add, and I even got to go hands-on with the first couple of levels in Worldslayer.
While it’s not revolutionizing Outriders, Worldslayer plays to the game’s strengths and will energize and extend playtime by hundreds of hours for hardcore players.
For whom the bell tolls
Worldslayer takes place immediately after the events of Outriders’ plot, and its story is as over-the-top, gruff, and hilariously edgy as ever. The raging Anomaly storm is exponentially worsening despite the player’s efforts in Outriders’ campaign. In fighting it back, the expansion brings players to plenty of new places on the alien planet of Enoch and forces them to take on the Insurgents and their altered leader, Ereshkigal.

In the first two levels of Worldslayer, I explored the snowy Glacier’s Edge and the abandoned Driftwater village. Although the game’s linear-level design approach hasn’t changed much with this expansion, the combat and enemy design have only improved. Enemies of all sizes, shapes, and forms attacked me from the ground and the air, and using my Altered’s powers was essential for survival.
Glacier’s Edge was a short and story-driven level where the stakes of the worsening anomaly and Ereshkigal were teased. Still, it capped off with a thrilling fight against a giant Snow Behemoth that wasn’t afraid to quickly charge at and decimate me if I got its attention. Meanwhile, Driftwater is as eerie and atmospheric as you’d expect an abandoned fishing village to be.
Although the game’s linear-level design approach hasn’t changed much with this expansion, the combat and enemy design have only improved.

With E3 2022 canceled, these are the summer gaming events to watch
E3 logo

We learned this week that 2022 will be the second year since 1995 to not have any kind of E3 expo. While the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) says E3's physical and digital cancelation this year enables it to "devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer," it also raises questions regarding how game announcements will happen this summer. Companies like Microsoft and Nintendo often tie big reveals to E3, so what is the industry's plan now that E3 2022 is officially canceled?
So far, we only know of a couple of events that will take place, though there's still time for a lot more to be announced. For those wondering how E3 2022's cancelation will impact summer 2022's game reveal landscape, we've broken down everything that is and isn't happening -- and that might happen -- in the coming months.
What's not happening
E3's absence leaves a crater in the usual gaming hype cycle. Typically, the yearly event took place for a week in Los Angeles and served as a spot where game publishers could announce and advertise their upcoming slates of titles and game-related products. In 2020, the ESA canceled the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it returned digitally in 2021 with mixed results.

On March 31, the event organizers at the ESA confirmed that there would be no digital or physical E3 event this year. That was quite surprising as more and more in-person events are returning, and the ESA even demonstrated that it could hold the event digitally before. The event may return in 2023, but this year the E3 event that typically consolidates many gaming announcements to one week in June won't play out like normal.
Outside of E3, we also know that EA won't hold its yearly EA Play Live event this summer. Typically, the publisher has its own events outside of E3, but chose not to this year because "this year things aren't lining up to show you everything on one date." That means that if we get new information on titles like the Dead Space remake or the next Dragon Age and Mass Effect, it won't be at an E3-adjacent event.
What is happening
There are still some major gaming events that will take place this summer. This June, the biggest one is Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. The creator of The Game Awards plans to hold a Summer Game Fest Kickoff Livestream full of new trailers and announcements. Last year's event featured the release date of Elden Ring, so there are certainly high expectations surrounding the showcase, especially as E3 won't be drawing away any reveals. An indie-focused Day of the Devs presentation and other Summer Game Fest-branded events are also expected to take place this June. Keighley tweeted that Summer Game Fest festivities "will be less than one month this year."
IGN confirmed that its Summer of Gaming event would also take place in June and feature exclusive trailers, gameplay, and interviews. Bethesda has also teased that it will show Starfield this summer, and we're supposed to get another look at Final Fantasy XVI soon.
As for in-person events, a couple of them are happening later in the summer. Gamescom, a European gaming expo equivalent to E3, will happen in person in Cologne, Germany. In Japan, the Tokyo Game Show will be the final big in-person summer event between September 15 and 18. While E3 might not be happening, it's clear that some digital showcases will happen this summer and that events outside of America are still on track to take place in person.

Babylon’s Fall will still get full support after weak launch
A group of Gallu in a threatening stance in Babylon's Fall.

Babylon's Fall from PlatinumGames and Square Enix will likely go down as one of the worst games of 2022. Despite that, the developers are promising continued support for the live-service title.
"There are no plans to reduce the scale of development on Babylon's Fall," a statement in the latest set of patch notes reads. "Content up to the end of season 2 is now practically complete and we have started work on season 3 and beyond. We will continue to provide new content for the game and make improvements based on player feedback, striving to keep existing players playing and to attract newcomers."

This multiplayer action game was released on March 3 and was immediately met with criticism over its ugly visuals and sluggish gameplay. Babylon's Fall currently sits at a 39 on review aggregate site Metacritic and appears to have flopped on PC as the multiplayer-focused game only seems to ever have a player count in the hundreds. It's a particularly disappointing release for PlatinumGames, which is known for strong single-player action games, though it may start to focus more on live-service titles in the future.
Publisher Square Enix now seems to be in damage control mode as it put out a survey asking players what they'd like to see improved and is now promising continued support in a post. The patch notes detail new content updates, explain the feedback-driven updates coming in late March and beyond, and tease a Nier: Automata collaboration event, but the developer and publisher's promise to continue supporting the game is what sticks out the most.
Having to reassure players that your live-service isn't shutting down just two weeks after launch isn't a good look and speaks to the low state of the game. Square Enix has had a good track record with sticking with live-service games that had rocky launches like the original version of Final Fantasy XIV and Marvel's Avengers. Still, there's no doubt that those games aren't great company for Babylon's Fall to keep.
Babylon's Fall is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5. Square Enix plans to release a demo of the game on Steam on March 23.
