Vive la France: Catherine de Medici leads the French in 'Civilization VI'

The French have always been a mainstay of the Civilization series, guided by legendary leaders such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis XIV, and Charles de Gaulle. Civilization VI will bring the debut of Catherine de Medici.

Born of Italy’s powerful de Medici family, Catherine exerted a strong influence on the French court in the latter half of the 16th century, as wife to King Henry II, intermittent queen regent, and mother to three subsequent kings of France. Retaining power in the French monarchy during a period of great social, political, and religious upheaval, some historians have called her the most powerful woman in 16th century Europe.

France’s unique ability is called Grand Tour, which provides a boost for constructing midgame wonders and a tourism bonus for all wonders built. Their unique tile improvement, the Chateau, must be built next to a river, but provides culture and gets additional bonuses for proximity to wonders.

The Garde Imperiale is France’s unique unit. It helps defend all of those wonders from jealous neighbors. They receive a combat bonus for fighting on the capital city’s home continent, and generate Great General points from kills.

Lastly, Catherine is the first leader revealed so far to focus on espionage. Her ladies in waiting serve as a bonus spy network, providing additional diplomatic information about newly met rivals by listening to court rumors. Catherine will also receive an extra spy once castles are researched.

Unlike China and Egypt, whose abilities encourage them to build a lot of wonders early and then snowball that early lead into victory, France is geared toward peaking around the medieval and renaissance periods. The culture and tourism bonuses point toward a cultural victory, but like all of the other civilizations revealed so far, there is a lot of flexibility in their features. With most of the obvious French leaders in history already covered by the series, Catherine is a really interesting choice as someone that had a strong hand in the leadership of France for an extended and important period, even if she only explicitly ruled it for some of that time.

Civilization VI arrives on October 21 for PC. We will be getting more hands-on time with the game in the next few weeks, so stay tuned for our ongoing impressions.

Microsoft is testing a Steam-like in-game overlay
A screenshot of Edge Game Assist with Capture, Audio, and Performance windows open on-screen.

Have you ever paused your game, tabbed over to a browser, and Googled something you were stuck on? You aren't alone. 88% of PC players have done that, Microsoft says. While this works for a lot of people, it can cause games to glitch out (like Skyrim, which somehow always loses my crosshairs).

Microsoft's solution is Edge Game Assist, a fully-featured in-game browser that's similar to Steam's overlay but with a twist. It's essentially a gaming-optimized version of Microsoft Edge that appears on top of your game in Game Bar. Here's the cool part: It knows what you're playing and will toss tips your way (although that feature only works for a few games at the moment). And even cooler, you'll be able to access your browsing data from the normal version of Edge, so you won't need to log back in to any sites. That also means you can access your browsing data from your phone and your PC.

The PlayStation Portal is finally worth buying
A Pulse Elite, DualSense, and PlayStation Portal sit on a table.

Whether you're looking at the base PlayStation 5 or the Pro model, investing in a current-gen machine hasn't gotten any cheaper since launch. While sales for Sony's newest console are by no means bad, there are still a large number of players out there who are either sticking with their PS4s or simply holding off on buying hardware entirely. Sadly, $450 is the lowest admission price (excluding the rare discount or buying secondhand), and it is not an insignificant amount of money for most people.

The PlayStation Portal was originally launched as an accessory to the PS5, much to the chagrin of those who were hoping for the next iteration of the PlayStation Vita. It isn't quite the dedicated PlayStation handheld we wanted, but it might be the closest thing we get. Thanks to a fresh update, this $200 device has transformed into a no-brainer entry point to the PlayStation ecosystem that doesn't break the bank, and I can easily recommend to almost anyone.
Step through the portal
At launch, the PlayStation Portal was fairly limited in functionality. It would allow you to play your PS5 games remotely so long as both were connected to the internet. That kept it from truly competing with devices like the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch, which could function completely independently. That has all changed with the latest firmware update. Now, the Portal can stream a selection of PS5 games directly from the cloud via the internet -- no PS5 required. While the update to the Portal doesn't fully take it off the leash -- you're still tethered to a Wi-Fi connection -- it does create the perfect on-ramp for new players.
