Frederick Barbarossa leads Germany in ‘Civilization VI’

From its humble origins as disparate barbarian tribes, picking away at the crumbling Roman empire, Germany rose to be one of the most enduring global powers from the middle ages onward. A mainstay of the Civilization series, Germany returns for Civilization VI under the stewardship of Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor for the latter half of the 12th century.

Also known as Frederick Barbarossa (“red beard” in Italian), historians consider Frederick one of the medieval period’s greatest rulers. He was ambitious, charismatic, and widely respected for his political and battlefield acumen. Like England’s Arthur, legend has it that Barbarossa did not in fact die during the Third Crusade, but is actually asleep with his knights beneath a mountain, eventually to return and restore Germany’s glory. He last appeared in the series as Germany’s leader in Civilization II.

Famously adept as a general, Frederick gets an extra military policy slot for the government. He was specifically noted for capturing numerous Italian city states, so like Ghengis Khan in Civ V, Frederick’s army gets a bonus when fighting city-state units.

More than just a great military power, Germany is also famously industrious and productive. The civ’s overall unique ability is to build one more district per city than the population cap would usually allow. One of these can be the Hanse, which replaces the Industrial Zone. It gets bonus productivity for being next to commercial hubs, resources, and other districts.

Lastly, as a nod to Germany’s dominant role in World War II, the German unique unit is the U-boat submarine. Notorious terrors of the North Atlantic for Allied military and commercial ships, the U-boat is cheaper to produce than standard subs, and receives a combat boost in deep water.

Germany’s set of abilities is another great example of how the designers of Civilization VI want to push players towards that nation’s historical reality, while still allowing for a great deal of strategic flexibility in practice. Germany is primed to forge an early empire out of city-states, and then can potentially become a powerful military force in the modern era. However, its broader productivity bonuses allow Germany to pursue any type of victory in addition to Domination.

Civilization VI hits PC on October 21, 2016.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns dev confirms romance options were never in the game
Magik after opening a portal for the first time in Marvel's Midnight Suns.

When Marvel's Midnight Suns was released in 2022, some were disappointed that players were unable to romance any of the superhero characters in the game. While players have wondered whether or not that was Marvel or Firaxis' decision, Midnight Suns' Creative Director Jake Solomon has now affirmed to Digital Trends in an interview that he truly never considered romance for the game.

"I’ve seen people say romance was a part of this, but it never was. I never even brought it up to Marvel because I couldn’t find a way," Solomon told Digital Trends as part of a wider discussion about his work on XCOM and Marvel's Midnight Suns, as well as the formation of Midsummer Studios. "I think the best way for romance to work is for the characters to respond to what the main character wants, right? I think it has to be like that, so it’s hard to mess with these really defined characters. They have these defined sexualities, and it would be hard to fulfill fantasies for all players in terms of what it is they want to do."

TopSpin 2K25 serves up a fun, but safe tennis simulation revival
Serena Williams plays Tennis in TopSpin 2K25.

The first video game console I ever owned was an original Xbox that came bundled with two games: NCAA Football 2005 and Top Spin. My appreciation for both Madden and tennis games can be traced back to those being two of my first-ever console gaming experiences.

That’s why I was very excited to hear that Mafia 3 developer Hanger 13 and publisher 2K were bringing the Top Spin tennis series back with TopSpin 2K25 after a 13-year dormancy. Unfortunately, I'm disappointed with how underwhelming the overall product is. Even though it’s the series’ grand return after over a decade, it feels like an extremely iterative sequel to Top Spin 4. It’s certainly approachable, thanks to great tutorials and new meter systems to help players learn proper timing, but TopSpin 2K25's light content offering doesn't make for the strongest opening serve.
Top Spin returns
Developer Hanger 13 hasn’t been coy about the fact that it used 2011's Top Spin 4 as the base to build TopSpin 2K25. Top Spin 4 is a fantastic tennis game that people still play to this day, as it perfected the series’ timing-based gameplay. This isn’t like Mario Tennis Aces, where a special ability can shoot you across the court and hit timing doesn’t matter. TopSpin 2K25 is a true simulation, so learning proper positioning on the court, when to release a button to swing your racket, and how to aim your shot properly are all critical to success.

Xbox Game Pass loses some horror greats, but gains a kid-friendly racing game
A custom car built drives around Lego 2K Drive.

We've learned what games will come to Xbox Game Pass over the first half of this April, and leading the batch is Lego 2K Drive, a Lego racing game that's a solid alternative to the Forza Horizon games that are also available on Microsoft's subscription service.

Lego 2K Drive was released in May 2023 and is an enjoyable racing game where players can build their own Lego vehicles and race throughout several open worlds. It found the middle ground between the likes of Mario Kart and Forza Horizon and thrives in that space, even if the microtransactions can be a little aggressive for a game aimed at children. Playground Games has not yet confirmed if another Forza Horizon game is in the works at this time, so Xbox fans can play this game to fill that void until a new one is announced.
