Blizzard details Diablo 4 customization options and new enemies

Blizzard Entertainment has shed some light on Diablo 4‘s customization options. Players can change multiple aspects of their character, including skin tone, hairstyle, and tattoos. Armor dyes are also now in the gam, giving players even more ways to change up their looks.

Blizzard Entertainment posted its quarterly update for Diablo 4 to fill players in on what it’s currently working on. One of the main subjects is character customization. Diablo 4 allows players to change their character’s skin tone, jewelry, hairstyle and hair color, tattoos, and makeup.

Specific customizable options will only be available to certain classes in order to support the classes’ specific backgrounds. Armor dying is also available for players who want to really create their own personal character. Each set of armor will feature multiple sections to recolor and there will be access to a myriad of colors.

Diablo 4 is the first game in the series that will have in-game cutscenes featuring player characters. Normally, the series features prerendered cutscenes and cinematics that involve characters in the narrative, but never the actual players. With these new in-game cutscenes, players will now see their characters interact with the story in a more cinematic way. This means that your customizable options will be on full display during these cutscenes.

The update also shows off some enemies, new and old, that players will encounter during their journey through Sanctuary. Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that classic enemies such as succubi and skeleton warriors will make a comeback in the fourth installment of the franchise. The Blood Bishop is a new enemy that was announced in the quarterly update. This sanguine spellcaster will pelt players with magic from a distance while also using area of effect skills to deny them ground to move around. This creature seems to be created completely out of blood and arteries with a golden crown on top of its head. It will use blood clots that explode and do damage to a wide area to attack against players.

There is currently no release date for Diablo 4.

BlizzCon 2024 is not happening despite Blizzard’s strong 2024 lineup
A still from World of Warcraft The Worldsoul Saga's reveal tralier.

World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch maker Blizzard Entertainment confirmed that BlizzCon 2024 will not be happening.

BlizzCon was a convention that Blizzard Entertainment held almost every year between 2005 and 2019 to celebrate its games and make new announcements. The pandemic and hostile workplace allegations against Blizzard meant that no shows were held in 2020 or 2022 (2021 was digital-only), but BlizzCon made its grand return in 2023. We attended it last November and had the opportunity to speak with developers and learn more about Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer's first visit to Blizzard, upcoming plans for franchises like Diablo and Warcraft, and more. Although Blizzard never outright confirmed that it would hold BlizzCon in 2024, the event was expected to continue after its return last year.

Xbox Game Pass gets its first Activision Blizzard game very soon
xbox game pass march games diablo 4 iv

Microsoft unveiled the batch of titles coming to its gaming subscription service throughout the back half of March. Quite a few awesome titles are making their way to the service, but by far, the most notable addition is Diablo IV, the first Activision Blizzard game being made available on Xbox Game Pass.

Diablo IV was released in June 2023, just a few months before Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. It's the latest entry in a long-running isometric RPG series, and it retains the same engaging dungeon design, deep progression systems, and captivating loot loop that makes games in this franchise special. People have been wondering when Activision Blizzard games would arrive on Xbox Game Pass in the months since the acquisition process was completed, and Diablo IV was finally confirmed to be coming to the service on March 28 last month.

Crash Bandicoot 4 developer Toys for Bob is going independent
Crash Bandicoot 4 stylized gameplay screen.

Activision studio Toys for Bob -- best known for its work on franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Skylanders, and Spyro -- is separating from Microsoft and going independent. It isn't completely leaving Xbox and Activision behind, though, as the studio is looking to form a partnership with those companies.

The developer, which was reportedly impacted heavily by the January 2024 Xbox layoffs, announced the news in a blog post written by studio heads Paul Yan and Avery Lodato. "We believe that now is the time to take the studio and our future games to the next level. This opportunity allows us to return to our roots of being a small and nimble studio," they wrote. The pair also claims that Toys for Bob is "exploring a possible partnership between our new studio and Microsoft" on whatever game it makes next, although Microsoft won't have ownership over the studio anymore.
