Discord Nitro Games to shut down next month due to lack of players

Discord will shut down its Nitro Games catalog next month, as there are not enough players taking advantage of the library of free games.

Discord Nitro is the platform’s monthly subscription, and the Nitro Games catalog was one of the perks of membership. The library was launched nearly a year ago with ambitions to challenge Steam, for which Discord secured $150 million in funding.

Nitro Games currently offers more than 100 titles, including Paladins, System Shock, Torchlight II, Super Meat Boy, and Psychonauts. The collection, however, was not good enough to attract a huge following among Discord Nitro subscribers.

“Through your valuable feedback, it became clear that while we and some of you love these games, the truth is the vast majority of Nitro subscribers didn’t play them,” said Discord in a blog post.

The contracts concerning Nitro Games are up for renewal, but Discord has decided that it will not proceed with the catalog, which will be shut down on October 15. Discord Nitro subscribers will have access to the games until that date. The change will only affect the free titles though, as purchased games will remain on the platform.

Discord confirmed that Discord Nitro subscribers who want to cancel their membership because of the pending discontinuation of Nitro Games will be able to request a refund.

The free games are just one aspect of Discord Nitro though, as it also provides users with new customization options, access to animated emojis and an expanded upload limit that was just doubled to 100MB. The subscription, which goes for $10 per month, also recently launched Go Live, which makes it easy to stream gameplay to friends. Discord also renewed its commitment to keeping the platform’s core feature free. In addition, because the app does not make money from advertisements, its only customers are the platform’s users, which means that the service will be further improved with the user experience in mind.

Discord has grown as a chat and voice program that is favored within the video game community. Anybody can join Discord servers based on their favorite topics, but making new Discord bots does not take too much of an effort.

Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya is leaving PlatinumGames next month
Bayonetta holds a magical device in Bayonetta 3.

PlatinumGames, the developer behind critically acclaimed action games such as Bayonetta 3 and NieR: Automata, has announced that one of its co-founders and frequent game directors, Hideki Kamiya, will leave the company in October.

Hideki Kamiya originally made a name for himself directing games like Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and Okami for Capcom. After Capcom closed down the Clover Studio subsidiary he worked at in 2006, he went on to co-found PlatinumGames with Resident Evil and God Hand creator Shinji Mikami and Capcom producer Atsushi Inaba. Kamiya had stuck with the company through its ups and downs ever since, directing every game in the Bayonetta series, The Wonderful 101, and more. He was currently directing a game codenamed Project G.G.; the state of that game now that he's leaving PlatinumGames is unknown.
"We regret to announce that Hideki Kamiya will be leaving PlatinumGames on October 12, 2023," PlatinumGames tweeted earlier this morning. "We are truly grateful for his creative ideas, leadership, and contribution to the growth of PlatinumGames from our start-up to this very day. We believe that he will continue to succeed in his future endeavors as a game creator. We are looking forward to seeing the game industry grow into a better place with him in it. We wish him all the best for the future!"

Kamiya confirmed this message on his personal X account, stating the following: "As announced on the official PlatinumGames X account, I will be leaving PlatinumGames on October 12, 2023. This came after a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs. and was by no means an easy decision to make. However, I feel this outcome is for the best. I will continue to create in my Hideki Kamiya way. I hope you'll keep your eyes peeled."

Microsoft will shut down the Xbox 360 Store next year
An image of backward compatible Xbox 360 games.

Microsoft announced today that it plans to shut down the Xbox 360 in 2024, an extremely disappointing move that's bad for game preservation.

The Xbox 360 Store, also known as the Xbox Live Marketplace, has been present on Microsoft's second game console in some form ever since it launched in 2005. In recent years, storefront shut down for older systems have become more common. The 3DS and Wii U eShops went offline in March despite player anger, while Sony planned to shut down the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita storefronts in 2021 before reversing that decision because of the backlash. Regardless, the loss of any storefront is a dour move for the video game industry, as some games are exclusively available to them and will be lost forever when the store goes offline.

Nintendo Switch loses an exclusive Square Enix game next month
A duel in the Wild West section of Live A Live.

Square Enix's beautiful HD-2D remake of Live A Live will no longer be a Nintendo Switch exclusive starting next month. The game comes out on PlayStation consoles and PCs on April 27.
Live A Live is a unique grid-based RPG with a fun narrative gimmick. Its story is split up into eight different sections set across eight different sections: Prehistory, The Middle Ages, Imperial China, Twilight of Edo Japan, The Wild West, Present Day, The Near Future, and The Distant Future. Each comes with its own protagonist and gameplay gimmicks before they all crescendo together in a final chapter.

On top of that, this remake of a 1994 SNES game also gives the experience an extreme visual facelift with the HD-2D visuals that make games like Octopath Traveler 2 shine. Digital Trends found the game charming, with George Yang saying Live A Live "has the hallmarks that make it a good entry in the genre" in his three-and-a-half star review of the title.
In North America, Nintendo published the Switch version of Live A Live. Now that the game is coming to other platforms, though, Square Enix has taken back over. To promote the upcoming release, Square Enix has released a demo for Live A Live on PS4 and PS5 today, which lets players try some of the Twilight of Edo Japan, The Distant Future, and The Wild West sections of the game.
Live a Live is available now for Nintendo Switch and will be released for PC, PS4, and PS5 on April 27. PlayStation Plus members can currently preorder the game for a 20% discount as well.
