Dragon Quest XII and 5 more games announced at franchise’s anniversary stream

The Dragon Quest series is getting six new games, as announced during the series’ 35th-anniversary livestream. The list includes Dragon Quest XII: Flames of Fate, a 2D remake of Dragon Quest III, and more.

DRAGON QUEST 35th Anniversary Special

Dragon Quest XII: Flames of Fate was the biggest announcement, though it only got a logo reveal. The RPG will be more “adult” compared to the other Dragon Quest games, according to Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii. The Command system, or the battle mechanics, will be completely different from the other games in the series and player choices will play some kind of role.

Dragon Quest III is getting a remake in the graphic style of Octopath Traveler with Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake. The game features stylized HD-2D graphics. It will have a simultaneous worldwide release on consoles. During the interview portion of the livestream, Yuji Horii let slip that there are plans to remake Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest II in a similar fashion.

Dragon Quest Treasures is a completely new game that follows Erik the thief from Dragon Quest XI, and his sister Mia. Nothing else was revealed about the game as both consoles and release date are unconfirmed. The trailer features Erik traversing an open world and collecting treasures, as well as summoning a dracky to help with a double-jump. Yuji Horii hinted that there will be a new Dragon Quest Monster game announcement soon, but no other details were revealed.

Dragon Quest KeshiKeshi is a free-to-play match-three puzzle game coming to iOS and Android devices later this year. The trailer showed off a doodle-like art style and cute stylized erasers with the faces of iconic characters and monsters from the series.  The game will require players to match erasers in order to erase monsters.

Dragon Quest X Online will have its 10-year anniversary next year and it is celebrating by releasing Version 6 of the game. Little is known about what will be included in Version 6, however, the trailer features a Celestrian from Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. This could imply players will be interacting with more Celestrians and possibly the World Tree Yggdrasil.

Finally, Dragon Quest X Offline is the proclaimed cousin version of Dragon Quest X Online. This game will be played entirely solo and has a deformed art style to give the game a cuter look and to feel more nostalgic. Dragon Quest X Offline will have the same story as the online version. Both Dragon Quest X Offline and Version 6 will only be released in Japan.

For most people out there, Square Enix has always been around. However, for those more seasoned gamers out there, we remember a time when there was both SquareSoft and Enix. These two Japanese companies were the biggest rivals at the time. SquareSoft had their flagship Final Fantasy series, while Enix was keeping pace (in Japan anyway) with their legendary Dragon Quest games. When these two titans merged, it was one of the biggest deals in the entire industry. The result was essentially all the biggest JRPG franchises coming under one roof and going by the name Square Enix. Since that merger in the early 2000s, this developer and publisher has expanded to include many western studios and franchises as well.

Between the combined histories of SquareSoft, Enix, and the two merged companies, Square Enix may have one of the most impressive track records of all time. These two have been putting out some genre-defining titles almost since video games first began and show no signs of slowing down to this day. With that many impressive games under their name, it can be easy to just call Square Enix the JRPG developer, but they are responsible for so many more amazing games than that. It was no easy task, but we've come up with our list of the best Square Enix games of all time.

A new Tomb Raider game is in development on Unreal Engine 5

Crystal Dynamics confirmed that it is working on a new Tomb Raider game that will use Unreal Engine 5, a game engine now available to all developers. 
At the end of Epic Games' The State of Unreal 2022 presentation, which marked the wide release of Unreal Engine 5 to all developers, Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider franchise general manager Dallas Dickinson confirmed the new project. No gameplay or in-engine development footage was shown, but Dickinson voiced his enthusiasm for using Unreal Engine 5 to create the project.
"This new engine translates into next-level storytelling in gameplay experiences, and that's why we are thrilled to announce today that we have just started development of our next Tomb Raider game, powered by Unreal Engine 5," he said. "Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high-quality cinematic action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise."

There are no new story or gameplay details. However, Crystal Dynamics has previously voiced its intention to connect the most recent trilogy and the classic titles with new Tomb Raider media. Outside of Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics is currently working on post-launch support for Marvel's Avengers and is assisting The Initiative in developing the next Perfect Dark game, which also uses Unreal Engine 5. Eidos Montreal, not Crystal Dynamics, actually developed Shadow of the Tomb Raider, so this marks the studio's return to the series. 
The new Tomb Raider is one of several brand-new games that will use Unreal Engine 5, as many studios like Crystal Dynamics and The Witcher's CD Projekt Red have committed to using the game engine for their next titles. The new engine features notable improvements over Unreal Engine 4, namely its Lumen global illumination system and Nanite technology, allowing for increased geometric detail and fidelity.
It sounds like this new Tomb Raider is early in development, so it will likely be a while before we hear more about it. Hopefully, it's an awesome showcase of Unreal Engine 5's power when it launches, presumably only on current-gen platforms.
