Fallout 4’s first DLC to add custom robots and Bethesda’s largest expansion ever

A few months after release, and most of Fallout 4‘s most dedicated fans have probably already found their son, resolved their conflict with the mysterious Institute, and settled into building elaborate clubhouses and exploring corners of the map they’d thus far missed. Just in time, then, Bethesda has finally released details on the game’s first three DLC release, promising to inject hours of new fun into the Commonwealth Wasteland (and beyond!).

Coming first in March is the robotic-themed Automatron. “The mysterious Mechanist has unleashed a horde of evil robots into the Commonwealth, including the devious Robobrain,” reads the announcement. Players will be able to hunt down robots, strip them for parts, and then customize their own robot companions. Mix and match hundreds of parts, mods, and weapons, “like the all-new lightning chain gun.” Cosmetic options like paint schemes and voice selection ensure that your roving murderbot will be truly your own. Automatron will be available à la carte for $10.

Following in April is the smaller Wasteland Workshop expansion, which will allow you to “design and set cages to capture live creatures — from raiders to Deathclaws!” Once captured, you can tame them or set them to fight each other in battle. Imagine if Ash threw out a Poké Ball and instead of an adorable, furry creature, out came a sweaty, leather-clad wasteland raider, jacked up on amphetamines and waving a tire iron over his head. I’m also curious what the process of “taming” a raider entails.

Additionally, Wasteland Workshop will add new settlement design options, “like nixi tube lighting, letter kits, taxidermy and more!” It will be available for $5.

Lastly, the most substantial expansion adds a whole new area off the coast of Maine in Far Harbor, coming in May. “A new case from Valentine’s Detective Agency leads you on a search for a young woman and a secret colony of synths.” This new location (likely based on Mount Desert Island, which includes the town of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park) is apparently the largest land mass for an add-on that Bethesda has ever created, and will feature new settlements, faction quests, friends, foes, and higher-level gear. Far Harbor costs the most on its own at $25.

Bethesda’s announcement also insists that this is just the beginning, and that more than $60 of new content will roll out in 2016. Accordingly, the Season Pass, which is currently available for $30, will be going up to $50 on March 1, 2016. Anyone who already purchased it at the lower price, however, or who does so before March, will still get access to everything at the lower cost, so buy now if you were planning on it.

Select fans on all platforms will get early access to all of the DLC content through closed betas, for which you can sign up right now by creating a Bethesda.net account. The beta will include the full version of the new content, including achievements, and participants will not have to purchase it once released in full.

Lastly Bethesda reiterates that they are working hard on additional free fixes and updates to the game, including the overhauled Survival Mode that was recently teased, as well as the long-promised Creation Kit to support modders.

The best weapons in Fallout 4 and where to find them
People standing outside Nuka World.

Bethesda titles are massive, with tons of loot to acquire. From the fantasy series of Elder Scrolls VI, to the sci-fi world of the future in Starfield, the one thing they share is a wide range of weapons. In the wastelands of Fallout 4, and the new Fallout TV show, the weapons (and their cool names) are a major perk. Some weapons might give you an edge, but others feel as if they’re just for show.

While more common weapons like the submachine gun, hunting rifle, or powerful Gauss rifle will serve you well in the wasteland (especially if you add a weapon mod), there are a few rare weapons in the game that you'll want to get your hands on. We've created a guide that covers some of the best weapons in Fallout 4, from high-powered rifles to ghoul-slamming melee weapons, as well as how their performance might affect your gameplay for the better.

Fallout 4 is finally getting free Xbox Series X and PS5 upgrades
New Fallout 4 Creation Club mod content coming with the Xbox Series X and PS5 launch.

Bethesda has confirmed that the current-gen update for Fallout 4 will finally release on April 25.

That's good timing, as a Fallout TV show just released on Amazon Prime this month to positive buzz. Fallout 4 came out for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox One in 2015, and this definitely looks like it will be the most substantial update the game has received since its last expansion was released.

In celebration of Fallout's 25th anniversary, Bethesda has announced that Fallout 4 will get an upgrade for the current generation of consoles in 2023. This free update will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC and comes with a variety of new features that take advantage of more powerful hardware.

The upgraded version will include a performance mode that prioritizes high frame rates, in addition to new quality features that boost the game to 4K resolution. This new version of Fallout 4 also offers bug fixes and Creation Club content. Players who already own the game on PS4, Xbox One, and PC will gain access to the current-gen upgrade at no additional cost. It's unclear how much the game will cost for players buying it for the first time on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S.
