God of War Ragnarok’s PC port looks beefy, but there’s a catch

Sony revealed that the next PlayStation Studios title coming to PC will be 2022’s hit God of War Ragnarok. It will be available on September 19, 2024, on Steam.

PlayStation announced during its May 2024 State of Play that Ragnarok would be coming to PC two years after it originally came to PlayStation 4 and 5 consoles. The rebooted God of War, which released on PS4 in 2018, already came to PC in early 2022. The PC version of Ragnarok will allow for an uncapped frame rate, Nvidia DLSS 3.7, and super ultrawide support. It’ll also include the game’s standout Valhalla DLC.

There’s one small catch to all of this: God of War Ragnarok will require players to have a PlayStation Network account on PC. Sony recently faced backlash after imposing a PSN requirement on Helldivers 2, a move it walked back after fan outcry. Ragnarok‘s PSN requirement seems a bit odd considering that it’s a single-player game with no online component.

This is the latest PlayStation exclusive to come to PC in a growing list of successes. While PlayStation will launch live-service titles on PC and console simultaneously, such as Helldivers 2 and the upcoming Concord, it still keeps its single-player titles exclusive to its consoles for a few years before porting them to PC. Despite that time gap, each PlayStation Studios title released on PC has yielded success. Ghost of Tsushima was the latest PlayStation title to come to PC and achieved over 57,000 concurrent players. The original God of War came to PC in 2022 and holds the record for a single-player PlayStation Studios game at over 73,000 concurrent players.

PlayStation appears to be fully embracing the PC platform as a way to bring more players into its ecosystem. Besides the PSN requirement debacle that struck Helldivers 2 players, it has also introduced a new overlay system for Ghost of Tsushima to allow for more seamless linking of the PSN and PC platforms. We don’t know if God of War Ragnarok‘s PC port will utilize this overlay, but it seems very likely.

Riven’s upcoming remake is only happening because Cyan can do it justice
Save State promotional image featuring the observatory in the remake of Riven.

A remake of Riven: The Sequel to Myst, a PC puzzle game classic, comes PC, Mac, Meta Quest 2, and Meta Quest 3 later this month. Recreating such a beloved game is a daunting task for any developer. In an interview with Digital Trends, Rand Miller from Cyan Worlds, the studio behind the original Riven and this remake, explained that the studio tactfully waited to revisit Riven until they could get it right.

"Riven is such a special part of Cyan's history. We knew we would remake it for real-time 3D at some point, but not until we could really do it justice," Miller tells Digital Trends. "We have done several remakes of Myst, along with several other new games, which allowed us to test the 3D engine waters and get better and better at our real-time 3D skills. The stars seemed like they would align a few years ago so we began design."

This Miyazaki-inspired survival game lets you heal the environment
Person flying on green glider toward floating island in cloudy sky

Aloft gets its name from its floating archipelago, where you (and up to eight friends) are the only people left in an otherwise abandoned world. Like BitCraft, which I previewed during this year's  Game Developers Conference, it focuses on an interactive environment where players have to give in order to get. However, Aloft adds to the world-building with "healing," which will rebuild and nurture cursed islands. At Summer Game Fest, I attended a hands-off preview where I spoke with developers about their inspirations and watched them fight evil mushrooms to save the environment.

After 30 minutes, Aloft gave the impression of a survival game with a solid gameplay loop of cleansing hundreds of islands, designing your own home, and discovering new pieces of the world's mysterious history. As players glide between islands, they might find a few with dark auras that indicate infestation. There, they fight against monsters using weapons like axes and bows. Often, the core infestation manifests as a thick root that spawns hostile fungi-inspired enemies. Once players defeat them and rid the island of the cursed root, the dark aura disappears and it becomes lush again.

Age of Mythology: Retold will have controller support on PC from day one
Key art for Age of Mythology: Retold.

Age of Mythology: Retold will have full controller support on PC from day one. World's Edge confirmed this to me when I went hands-on with the real-time strategy (RTS) remake earlier this week following its appearance at the Xbox Games Showcase.

For those out of the loop, Age of Mythology: Retold is a remake of a beloved spinoff of the Age of Empires RTS series. It uses mythological characters and factions rather than historical ones, but still features the same engaging army-building and battling gameplay loop of Assemble Studios' classics. From what I played of Retold, this remake retains all of that while simply upgrading the visuals to be much prettier and adding some quality-of-life features (like being able to recharge god powers during a battle) that make the game even more fun to play.
