Google’s ‘Project Stream’ will let you play major games on the Chrome browser

Project Stream Official Gameplay Capture

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will be available in just a few days, and you can pick it up for play on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, but what if there were another option? With Google’s Project Stream, you will be able to stream the latest AAA games directly to your Chrome browser.

Project Stream is a “technical test to solve some of the biggest challenges of streaming,” according to Google. As you’ll be able to stream games through the service directly to your laptop or desktop, the heavy lifting won’t be done on your machine, and Google wants participants to help it push its limits.

You can sign up using this form for a chance to be selected by Google for Project Stream. When Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launches on October 5, so will the test, and you will be able to play the game until mid-January for free. A limited number of spots are available for the test and you need a high-speed internet connection (at least 25 Mbps), a keyboard and mouse, a Google account, a Ubisoft account, and the Chrome browser in order to participate.

“We’re looking forward to what the future of streaming holds, and feedback from those participating in Project Stream,” Google product manager Catherine Hsiao said in a blog post. “Thank you for helping us bring streaming to the next level.”

No other games have been announced for the program thus far, but it seems likely that a larger rollout will take place next year. The footage released for Odyssey show the game running at 60 frames per second in 1080p resolution.

Though official details from Google are scarce, it’s possible that Project Stream is just the tip of the iceberg. We have heard in the past that there could be a physical piece of hardware available for the service and that it could even have exclusive games. The platform is reportedly code-named “Yeti,” and it could even work with Chromcast units plugged into a television set.

Game streaming is already a thing, with services like GeForce Now allowing you to play games your machine can’t run on its own, but the ease of being able to stream games directly into your browser could open up the door for true console and high-end PC quality gaming from any device.

Google Play Games on PC beta

Google has launched the open beta for Google Play Games for PC in the U.S. The tech giant made the announcement in a blog post on Wednesday, saying that the beta is available for download in seven other countries as well, including Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore.

"We’re thrilled to expand our platform to more markets for players to enjoy their favorite games on Google Play," said Google Play Games director Arjun Dayal. "As we move towards a full release, we will continue to add new features and evaluate developer and player feedback."

5 video games to play after you’ve watched Black Adam
Lego Black Adam with lightning coming out of him in the game Lego DC Super-Villains.

Dwayne Johnson will make his grand DCEU debut with the upcoming Black Adam. Starring as the classic DC antihero, the seemingly infallible Johnson will attempt to inject a jolt of much-needed electricity into the otherwise gloomy and decaying DCEU. And, with Black Adam shaping to be one of the most powerful characters in the DCEU and some help from a fan-favorite character who spent too much time away from the screen, the highly-anticipated film has everything to win at the box office.

Seeing The Rock doing his sparkly thing might leave some fans in the mood for other similar properties. And while multiple films might scratch that itch -- indeed, the current cinematic market has superhero films up the wazoo -- several video games will also get the job done. Whether they have Black Adam as a playable character or major antagonist or simply feature similar themes or settings, these games will satisfy fans looking for something similar to Black Adam.

Ubisoft and more offer ways to play purchased Google Stadia games elsewhere
The protagonist of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla shouting in battle and wielding two axes.

Google recently announced that it plans to shutter its cloud gaming service Stadia in early 2023, leaving players who used it as one of their primary platforms in an awkward situation. Google already promised to refund people for their Google Stadia hardware and software purchases, but people are still losing access to games they enjoyed and save files they possibly dumped hours into. Thankfully, some developers are working on ways to help Stadia players.
The most notable studio to help Stadia players is Ubisoft, which was Google's earliest partner for the technology via an Assassin's Creed Odyssey demo. "While Stadia will shut down on January 18, 2023, we're happy to share that we're working to bring the games you own on Stadia to PC through Ubisoft Connect," Ubisoft tweeted. "We'll have more to share regarding specific details, as well as the impact for Ubisoft+ subscribers, at a later date." Thankfully, the Stadia versions of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, and Watch Dogs: Legion support cross-progression, so players won't lose their save files.

Ubisoft isn't the only developer to help. Developer Muse Games is giving Embr Steam codes to those who played its comedic co-op firefighting game on Stadia if they email the developer with screenshots of Embr in their Stadia library. Meanwhile, IO Interactive confirmed that it is "looking into ways for you to continue your Hitman experience on other platforms," as the World of Assassination trilogy was available on Google Stadia.
There's still the matter of the five Google Stadia exclusives: Gylt, Hello Engineer, Outcasters, Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle, and PixelJunk Raiders. So far, only one of those games seems like it will be saved. PixelJunk Raiders developer Q-Games said in a blog post that "we hope to find a way to continue to share the vibrant worlds of Planet Tantal in the future, and we’re open to discussing opportunities to find the right publishing partner to make it happen.. Tequila Works, tinyBuild, Splash Damage, and Bandai Namco Entertainment did not respond to requests for comment from Digital Trends.
While the shutdown of Google Stadia is disappointing for players like myself who enjoy cloud gaming, at least players will be get refunds, and in some cases get the game for a new platform.
