After you watch John Wick 4, get the game that inspired it for $4

John Wick 4 is in theaters now and by every metric, it’s a rousing success. Not only has the action film received rave reviews, but it raked in over $73 million in its opening weekend — a record for the series. With that success, it’s all but assured that more John Wick is on the way. Though if you want to dig deeper into the series after watching the latest installment, you should check out the video game that inspired its best moment: The Hong Kong Massacre.

The Hong Kong Massacre | Release Trailer | PS4

The final act of John Wick 4 includes an eye-catching action sequence where the camera cranes above Keanu Reeves, following a shootout from a top-down angle. It’s a bit of an unusual shot for a film, but gamers might be more familiar with it. The perspective mirrors that of indie action games like Hotline Miami.

As it turns, out that video game look isn’t a coincidence. In an interview with SlashFilm, director Chad Stahelski explained the genesis of the shot. “I had seen this video game and I’ll throw a shout-out,” Stahelski told SlashFilm. “I think it was called Hong Kong Massacre — they did this top shot and we had been doing so much with the big muzzle flashes and it just kind of clicked.”

If you haven’t heard of The Hong Kong Massacre, you’re probably not alone. The indie action game quietly launched in 2019 with a tepid response from critics. The shooter is a stylish riff on Hotline Miami that has players gunning through the criminal underworld on a quest for revenge. It all takes place from a familiar top-down camera angle as players flip through the air and fire their guns in slow-motion — all while muzzle flashes light up its dreary buildings.

If you’ve seen John Wick 4, you’ll see the connection right away. Though the game inspired the film, The Hong Kong Massacre plays out like a Keanu Reeves action flick — it’s basically a John Wick game. The title was criticized for some repetition and rough difficulty spikes, but it’s worth playing if you want to do a full scene study on one of the film’s best sequences.

After you’re done with that, there are plenty of other games like it worth checking out. Hotline Miami is a must-play and last year’s Midnight Fight Express has similar action movie gameplay. And of course, there’s also John Wick Hex: a surprising video game adaptation that turns the series into a turn-based action game. All of those should keep you occupied until John Wick 4 hits streaming services.

The Hong Kong Massacre is available on PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. It usually retails for $20, but you can currently get it far cheaper on Nintendo Switch. An eShop bundle that also includes the sci-fi title Beautiful Desolation is on sale right now for $4. The offer ends on April 12, 2023.

Sniper Elite: Resistance makes Nazi hunting great again
A sniper holds a gun at night in Sniper Elite: Resistance.

It’s a bit unfortunate that the Sniper Elite series is still as enjoyable as it is. You’d think that after 11 entries, tearing Nazis limb from limb with lead would get old. How often do we need to keep reliving a World War II power fantasy, anyways? But in a sobering present day where Nazism still rears its ugly head, the series will always be a source of catharsis for those who want a safe way to vent their frustrations.

And so here I am again in 2024, this time shredding Nazis in Sniper Elite: Resistance. Set to launch on January 30, 2025, the latest entry in developer Rebellion’s ultraviolent third-person shooter franchise is Sniper Elite 6 in everything but name. It’s another World War II adventure that turns enemy lines into a bloody immersive sim where stealth rules. In my first hands-on demo, I was dropped into a mission for some very familiar action. And while that might be something to critique in another series, I can’t say that taking down Nazis in the most brutal ways possible still doesn’t have a sick charm that I need right now.
Lock and load, again
For my demo, I was dropped into a basic infiltration mission. With three guns on my back and some healing items in tow, I’d need to sneak into a city and make my way toward a building at the heart of it. It’s a long journey that takes me through weaving city streets and lots of optional buildings that I can explore to find guns, intel, and collectibles. How I get there is up to me -- as is how I decide to deal with any Nazis in my path.

Is Civilization 7 cross-platform?
Two world leaders, Cleopatra and Caesar, going up against each other in front of their flags.

In today's day and age, launching an upcoming video game as hotly anticipated as Sid Meier's Civilization 7 and not having it be a cross-platform game can be a death sentence. Some of the best PC games like Valorant choose to have limited cross-platform support, while others like Final Fantasy 14 break down all barriers. We already know that this will be the first time the series has launched on consoles at the same time as PC, but has Civilization 7 kept up with the times and included cross-platform support? Let's find out.
Is Civilization 7 cross-platform?

Civilization 7 does have cross-platform support, but with a few catches. The game has fully crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch with the use of a 2K account. However, the number of players you can play with in certain modes depends on your platform. On anything but the Switch, up to five players can connect in the Antiquity & Exploration Ages mode and up to eight in the Modern Age mode. Switch players, meanwhile, are limited to four players in the Antiquity & Exploration mode and only six in Modern Age. Switch players are also not expected to be able to play on map sizes of Standard or larger, meaning anyone who wants to crossplay with a Switch player will also be subject to these limitations.

Green Man Gaming Black Friday special -- promo image with player on PC

Who doesn't love great deals on PC games? Sure, there are the usual suspects, but I want to take a moment to talk about one of my favorite places to go: Green Man Gaming. You can find a wide variety of PC games for sale, including DLC, new releases, and more. But one of the reasons I like it so much is thanks to a membership loyalty program called XP. Just like in games, you can level up your XP tier, essentially by purchasing games and content. Typically, to reach the top Gold XP tier you'd have to buy a lot of goods. But thanks to a Black Friday sale, you can get access free -- just use code XPDIGITAL.

You're probably wondering why that's a great deal or why it matters. With Gold XP you get exclusive discounts, including monthly vouchers on hot titles, but best of all, you generally get extra discounts on top of what's available in sales. So, you end up saving even more. That's precisely the case with Green Man Gaming's current Black Friday sale. Although, some of these games are already at a steep discount you can save even more here. Plus, the upgrade to Gold XP is free so why not take advantage? The free Gold XP will only be available from November 22 to December 3, so don't waste any time.
