Unofficial 'World of Warcraft' server returns game to 'vanilla' state this month

Elysium Project — Nostalrius PvP & PvE Release Date
A playable legacy version of World of Warcraft will

launch later this month, returning veteran players to the realm of Azeroth as it existed prior to the launch of Blizzard’s many expansions and gameplay overhauls.

Players can experience a “vanilla” version of World of Warcraft, including classic player vs. player and player vs. environment elements, with the launch of Nostalrius Realms on December 17.

Banding together as part of The Elysium Project, dedicated World of Warcraft fans have spent the past seven years preserving the popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) as it originally existed in 2006. Gameplay in the independently operated Nostalrius Realms closely adheres to standards established in version 1.12 of World of Warcraft, which many fans regard as the most enjoyable point in the game’s history.

Nostalrius exists separately from Blizzard’s official World of Warcraft servers, and is independently owned and operated. As the server surpassed 800,000 registered accounts earlier this year, Blizzard issued a cease-and-desist order demanding its immediate shutdown, resulting in its sudden closure in April.

After an online petition drew signatures of support from more than 276,000 displaced Nostalrius fans, Blizzard opened discussions with its creators. The talks were seemingly productive, as Blizzard now appears to have backed down from its legal threats to the point where Nostalrius server operations can resume.

“The Elysium Project (formerly Valkyrie Project) has been alive for 7 years now,” the collective states on its “about” page. “The team is comprised of dozens of individuals that span from all walks of life, from all over the globe. We all share a single bond that unites us; a love for vanilla World of Warcraft. Inspiration comes in many forms. Ours is what we feel to be the pinnacle of MMO gaming.”

The statement continues: “Together, we strive to bring the past to life, and to share it with the world. All while doing so for free, without payment, and for nothing in return other than seeing this game world reborn. We do not claim to own the rights to World of Warcraft in any capacity. We simply want to see it thrive once more.”

One year later, New World’s never-ending MMO grind is just fine
Character using lightning in New World.

It hardly feels like much time has passed between now and last October when I dropped over 170 hours of my life into a new pirate-themed MMORPG with a suspiciously colonial-inspired backdrop. When it was still relatively new (pun intended), Amazon Games Studios’ New World promised to be a whole bunch of things that a “modern” MMORPG like Final Fantasy 14 or World of Warcraft usually isn’t. It combined gameplay loops often seen in survival sandboxes -- for example, foraging herbs and crafting your own potions -- with a perpetual PVP battleground that determined the quality of life for all players on a server. It also promised many “old school” sensibilities like minimal fast travel and punishing combat where simple trips across the map were both expensive and treacherous.

Granted, New World really struggled to make any of these individual systems work well, and very little of the game was that much fun to play. Its combat system was thoroughly limited and repetitive, with very little changing between levels one through 60. What made the experience enjoyable was also often what made it feel so disjointed -- namely, the player-vs.-player contest for the map, which influenced elements as basic as how much it would cost to repair gear after a battle. Some people really love that sort of bare-bones, down-to-the-wire experience, but frankly, I couldn’t get past how unintuitive it felt. I walked away from New World feeling like it was mostly just OK -- a decent experiment with some pretty cool ideas that ultimately succumbed to its own emphasis on grind.

Activision Blizzard plans mobile Warcraft, next Call of Duty
Warcraft 3 Reforged main character holds a hammer and stares at the camera.

Activision Blizzard plans to release a new Call of Duty game and mobile Warcraft game in 2022, according to a February 2022 financial results report.
As part of that report, the company went over what investors could expect from Activision, Blizzard, and King in 2022. Notably, a Warcraft game for mobile phones is officially teased for the first time: "Blizzard is planning substantial new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022, including new experiences in World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, and getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players’ hands for the first time."
We've yet to learn the title of this game or see it in action. It'll be the first Warcraft game released since the disappointing Warcraft 3: Reforged in 2020, and the second to hit iOS and Android, following Hearthstone.
In the same report, Activision discussed Call of Duty in great detail. While the teased Call of Duty game is still untitled, this financial results report and a tweet from Infinity Ward heavily suggest that it's Modern Warfare 2. "Development on this year’s premium and Warzone experiences is being led by Activision’s renowned Infinity Ward studio," the results state. "The team is working on the most ambitious plan in franchise history, with industry-leading innovation and a broadly appealing franchise setting." Shortly afterward, Infinity Ward tweeted, "A new generation of Call of Duty is coming soon. Stay frosty."

"Stay frosty" is an iconic line of John "Soap" MacTavish, a classic Modern Warfare character that was only teased in the 2019 reboot. Considering that 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is widely regarded as the series' best game in recent memory, it's not a surprise that the Modern Warfare 2 rumors are true. A report from Bloomberg claims that this game will still release on PlayStation consoles, which makes sense as the Microsoft acquisition isn't expected to be complete until June 30, 2022.
Despite the acquisition being in progress, developers fighting to unionize, and the delay of Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV, this financial results report confirms that we can still expect new games from Activision Blizzard in 2022.

World of Warcraft will finally unite the Alliance and Horde
Human and orc sharing a drink together.

Peace has finally come to Azeroth. World of Warcraft will finally allow players to party together across the two factions. Now players from the Alliance can form a group with Horde players to take down dungeons and raids together. The cross-faction instanced content will be put on the public test server soon for update 9.2.5.

Since the beginning of World of Warcraft, two factions have dominated the fantasy world of Azeroth, the Alliance and the Horde. The opposing factions have been, more or less, in open conflict with each other for almost twenty years. Player versus player content has almost exclusively revolved around this premise, until now.
