Nintendo’s PlayStation prototype seen in action for the first time

Special thanks and clip of the first turn on!
The owner of a one-of-a-kind Nintendo PlayStation prototype has successfully restored the unreleased hardware to working condition, showing it in action for the very first time.

Designed as a CD-ROM add-on for the 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo’s PlayStation would have outfitted Super NES games with greater storage capacity and CD-quality sound, among other enhancements.

The video above shows the prototype powering up for the first time, revealing that it’s still in working condition. Owners Terry and Dan Diebold are currently displaying the rare specimen at a retrogaming show in Hong Kong, shortly after the pair sourced a compatible power supply.

In its current state, the Nintendo PlayStation does not play any unique games, and may not even be capable of booting CD-ROM software, as the device’s CD-ROM drive appears to be non-responsive. When booted up with a debugging cartridge inserted, the device will cycle through a series of internal tests, confirming the working condition of its component parts. The Nintendo PlayStation also plays retail-released Super Famicom cartridges.

While Nintendo originally partnered with Sony to produce a CD-ROM peripheral for its Super NES in the early ’90s, the deal fell through, leading Sony to continue hardware development and eventually release its own game console, the Sony PlayStation, in 1994. The prototype discovered this year features both PlayStation branding and Super Nintendo components, making it a prized rarity.

Retro hardware enthusiast LuigiBlood confirmed the legitimacy of the hardware in a series of blog posts this week, noting that the unit shares many hardware similarities with the Super NES. The device contains the same sound chips used in retail Super Famicom units, along with typical CD-ROM interface hardware.

LuigiBlood confirms long-held suspicions that the PlayStation would not provide significant graphical enhancement for compatible Super NES CD-ROM games, instead supplementing the console’s capabilities with increased RAM and storage capacity.

Nintendo Switch lifetime sales beat PlayStation 4
Person holding Nintendo Switch, looking at the home screen.

The Nintendo Switch's versatility has made it the bestselling console for the last five years. It has sold so well, in fact, that it has surpassed the lifetime sales of the PS4, according to The NPD Group.

Mat Piscatella, executive director and gaming industry advisor for The NPD Group, tweeted the sales figures for the Switch on Friday. He points out that the Switch is now the fourth highest unit selling console in U.S, and the sixth highest selling console overall, coming behind just three other bestselling consoles of all time, the PS2, Xbox 360, and Wii, Nintendo's legacy console. He also said that the Switch sold more units than any other console last month and outpaced Xbox Series X/S year-to-date.

Cyberpunk 2077 appears to be returning to the PlayStation Store
Jackie from Cyberpunk 2077 with a gun pointed at his head.

After being taken down last December, Cyberpunk 2077 is almost back on the PlayStation Store. The game was taken off of the digital storefront, an unprecedented move from Sony, on December 17, after it became clear that the game was essentially unplayable on all base PlayStation 4 consoles. PlayStation 4 Pro owners fared somewhat better, but still saw performance issues with the game. PlayStation 5 owners had the best luck of the bunch but were still plagued by the game's own bugs, glitches, and instability.

While you won't find the latest title from CD Projekt Red on the digital shop's web browser, IGN managed to find it on the PlayStation 5 Store. Apparently, the game can be found by simply searching for it. Cyberpunk 2077 is also showing up under the PS5 Store's "just announced" tag.

Sony has over 25 first-party PlayStation 5 games in development
Aloy looks at the horizon.

Sony has more than 25 first-party PlayStation 5 games in development, and nearly half of them are new intellectual property, according to a recent report from Wired. "There’s an incredible amount of variety originating from different regions. Big, small, different genres," Hermen Hulst, PlayStation head of Worldwide Studios, told Wired in reference to the PS5 games currently in development.

This is in line with what Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan said last month when confirming the PS5 will have more exclusives than ever before.
