Overwatch 2 removes Mei for at least 2 weeks due to ice wall exploit

Blizzard confirmed that it is temporarily removing Mei from Overwatch 2 until November 15 due to a bug discovered related to her Ice Wall ability.

We are working to address these issues as quickly as possible and aim to bring Mei back in our next upcoming patch which is set for November 15. pic.twitter.com/dHP65pMCsX

Hot off the heels of the removal of both Bastion and Torbjorn due to bugs that would render most of the cast unplayable for players, Mei is the next hero to be temporarily removed from Overwatch 2‘s roster. Both Bastion and Torbjorn have since been reintroduced to the game, but it will not be until November 15, which is when the next scheduled patch for the game, that Mei is due to return.

The reason for Mei’s suspension is stated as being related to a bug involving her Ice Wall ability allowing players to access areas of certain maps they weren’t intended to. By using this ability in specific locations, which creates a wall of ice that grows upward from the ground, Mei is able to exit the normal boundaries of the map. This not only made them essentially invincible, as they couldn’t be seen from inside the map but also allowed them to deal damage from complete safety.

Overwatch 2’s launch has been plagued with issues of all sorts since it launched in October. Despite the extremely long queues and DDoS attacks at launch, plus backlash over its battle pass and monetization systems, the game has seen massive player counts across all platforms. While having three characters have to be taken out of the game within the first few weeks of a game’s launch isn’t a great start for the sequel, at least Blizzard is recognizing and working to fix these exploits and bugs as quickly as possible.

Overwatch 2’s collaboration with Cowboy Bebop works surprisingly well
Cassidy's Spike skin in Overwatch 2.

Blizzard Entertainment announced that Overwatch 2's next crossover is with Cowboy Bebop, and a snazzy trailer recreates the anime's iconic opening with the collaboration's character skins.

The collaboration begins on March 12, when Legendary skins, emotes, and other items based on Cowboy Bebop will appear in the game's store. So far, a Cassidy skin based on Spike Spiegel, an Ashe skin that turns her into Faye Valentine, a Jet Black skin for Mauga, an Ed skin for Sombra, and an Ein Wrecking Ball skin are all confirmed for Overwatch 2. Although players will have to pay for most of these skins with microtransactions, the Wrecking Ball skin based on Ein will be obtainable for free.

Despite its rocky start, I’m still optimistic about Overwatch 2’s future
Lucio and other heroes attack enemies in Overwatch 2 story missions.

Overwatch 2’s launch year didn’t exactly go as planned.

In the lead-up to its October 2022 launch, the excitement for the hero shooter sequel was sky-high, largely thanks to a planned Hero mode. As its release date approached, several choices during development would erode that hype. That would include the departure of Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan, a controversial swap to five-player teams, and plans for a revamped battle pass and microtransaction system. Even more complaints arose when new characters were initially locked behind a battle pass and Blizzard ditched its planned PvE campaign -- which was arguably the biggest justification for creating the sequel in the first place..

Why Overwatch 2’s show-stealing new hero took an extra four years to debut
Mauga poses in Overwatch 2.

With the switch to 5v5, Tanks became a make-or-break part of any Overwatch 2 team. While Support and Damage players can rely on another player of their class to pick up their slack when they struggle, tanks no longer have that privilege. As a more casual Overwatch 2 player who’s not competitively viable, this has discouraged me from playing as a tank. While I do like the abilities of characters like Junker Queen, I’m hesitant to play as them because I’m worried about being the player that causes my team to lose. Mauga, the latest Overwatch 2 hero, looks to change that, but it took years of ideas and concept reboots on Blizzard’s end.

Unveiled at BlizzCon 2023, Mauga is an aggressive Samoan tank allied with Talon that can tear through enemies with his two chainguns and dash that makes him invincible. That makes him enjoyable for those who like more offensive Heroes, but Support fans will find some stuff to love with abilities that can heal other players or give them infinite ammo. I had the chance to play Mauga at BlizzCon 2023, and for the first time since Overwatch 2 was released, I’m eager to go back and play as a Tank.
