‘Overwatch’ gets esports team skins and new currency in 2018

Earlier in 2017, Activision Blizzard announced The Overwatch League, an esports organization comprised of teams from around the world. It’s one of the first esports leagues to introduce location-based teams in the same vein as traditional sports, and Overwatch players will soon be able to show their support for their hometown with special skins.

To make Overwatch matches easier to follow for viewers, Blizzard’s designers have created color-based skins for use in the game. The “home” version skins for all 12 will be available as official Overwatch League skins in 2018, and there will be options for all 26 in-game characters.

“Just like with traditional sports jerseys, purchasing Overwatch League skins will provide monetary support for teams in the league, and they’re also a great way to show off your team pride in the game,” league commissioner Nate Nanzer said in the announcement video.

A new currency called “League Tokens” will be included in Overwatch to make Overwatch League purchases, and it will not be used for anything else in the game. The tokens will not be used for loot boxes, so you can purchase the exact skin you were hoping to get, and when they’re introduced in early 2018, Blizzard will provide players on all platforms with enough tokens to purchase one skin.

The Overwatch League kicks off on January 10, and 12 teams will be participating across the Atlantic and Pacific divisions.

A pre-season is also taking place from December 6 to 9, and when the regular season begins, matches will take place multiple times a day throughout each month.

The Overwatch League includes teams owned by several familiar faces from the world of professional sports. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft co-owns the Boston Uprising, and Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke co-owns the Los Angeles Gladiators. New York Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon is a partner at Sterling.VC, a venture capital fund in charge of the New York Excelsior.

Overwatch is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

What is DPS in gaming?

Gaming is filled with jargon that sounds like complete nonsense to anyone not totally plugged into the space. Terms like Metroidvania and rouguelike/roguelite are rough enough, but when we abbreviate terms, it can be impossible to figure out what they mean, even when said in context. DPS is a term first used mainly in MMORPGs, but it has found its way into other genres like hero shooters and single-player RPGs, among others. It can, and is, applied to just about every game involving combat of some sort. If you've heard people complaining about their DPS, or see it listed as part of a weapon's stats, here's what it all means.
What does DPS mean?
DPS stands for Damage Per Second. It is shorthand for saying how powerful a weapon or character is by either listing its DPS as a number -- in which case the higher the number, the better -- or as its general role in a team. DPS on a weapon takes into account several things to make one more consumable stat, including how much damage it deals with each attack and how quickly it can attack. By dividing those numbers into seconds, you can equally compare how much any weapon or ability will do compared to another. For example, if one weapon hits every 2 seconds for 100 damage, the DPS would be 50, while a weapon that hits four times per second, but only deals 25 damage per hit, would have a DPS of 100.

In team games, DPS is often used to refer to one of the major roles. Tanks are characters meant to absorb most of the damage, healers heal, and DPS characters are the ones in charge of dealing the bulk of the team's damage. They are the team's aggressive killers, such as Soldier 76 in Overwatch 2 or the Black Mage in Final Fantasy 14. All their abilities and skills tend to be offensive-focused and need to rely on the other classes to support them.

It didn't take long for last year's excellent Street Fighter 6 to take the fighting game world by storm. Capcom’s critically praised fighting game didn't just revitalize the Street Fighter series, but reignited interest in the fighting genre as a whole. Capcom then focused on growing the competitive side of Street Fighter 6 by hosting a new entry of its tournament circuit, Capcom Cup, with a first-place prize of $1 million.

That historic prize pool was enough to awaken a fighting game community that was hungry to land a win. While many big names battled, the ultimate winner was a bit of a surprise. The million-dollar prize went to an unsponsored face that you might not recognize: Wang “UMA” Yuan-hao.

Overwatch 2’s story-driven PvE missions are being abandoned by Blizzard

Overwatch 2 finally got some of its long-awaited PvE content last August, but it doesn't look like more is on the way, according to some new reports.

Earlier this week, a story from Kotaku indicated that the future of Overwatch 2's story-driven PvE missions was in question after the first batch of missions, which were released as paid DLC for a free-to-play game and sold poorly. Now, a new report from Bloomberg affirms that. As part of a newsletter outlining wider frustrations Blizzard's developers have with how the company ties profit-sharing bonuses to the performance of games that specific teams make, Bloomberg touched on how the Overwatch 2 team's bonuses were negatively impacted by the failure of the PvE content. A lot of that PvE team was apparently laid off in January when Microsoft cut 1,900 games-related jobs, and sources now tell Bloomberg that Blizzard does not plan to finish its previously planned PvE content.
