These three Persona classics are headed to Xbox and PC

This story is part of our Summer Gaming Marathon series.

The Persona series is finally headed to Xbox for the first time ever, as announced during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase 2022. The games include Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal — all of which will be available on Xbox Game Pass for consoles and PC.

You’ll be able to play Persona 5 Royal on Xbox starting on October 21. The rest of the games will come at a later date. Check out the announcement trailer from Microsoft’s big show.

Persona Series on Xbox — Announce Trailer | Xbox Game Pass - Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022

Bringing the series to Xbox has been heavily requested for years, as Persona has primarily been made available on PlayStation platforms, with a few spin-offs coming to Nintendo systems, as well. The series has been around since 1996, but truly began to pick up steam with the launch of Persona 3 in 2006, along with Persona 3 Portable — an upgraded version — for PSP in 2009.

Persona 4 Golden, an expanded version of the fourth installment, then came out for the PS Vita in 2012, reaching even more players. After that, Persona 5 launched for PS4 in 2017, with the Royale edition releasing in 2019, offering more gameplay features and story enhancements. All three of these games are the definitive versions, each offering improvements from their original counterparts.

Microsoft has made strides to work more closely with Japanese developers in recent years, adding to its massive offering across its consoles and PC. And last-gen is included too, as the series will hit Xbox One, as well as Xbox Series X/S, and PC by summer 2023.

Here’s hoping the next Persona game launches on Xbox day and date alongside other platforms.

Metaphor: ReFantazio feels more familiar than I expected
The main character in an anime cutscene for Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Heading into my demo of Metaphor: ReFantazio at Summer Game Fest Play Days, I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to glean much from 45 minutes of playtime. While all of its trailers have been visually striking, I hadn't really gotten a sense of how it played and wondered if Atlus and Studio Zero had gone too far with visual flair following the positive response to Persona 5's user interface. Thankfully, Metaphor: ReFantazio felt more familiar than I'd expected.

Metaphor: ReFantazio feels like an unadulterated look at the kind of RPGs Atlus' best developers would make if they weren't restricted to the demon-collecting features ingrained into the core of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. It has all the visual flair, as well as the in-depth RPG systems, of those games, but puts the gameplay focus more on Archetypes, which are essentially character classes, party member positioning, and Synergy abilities. It's shaping up to be well worth the time of any Atlus RPG fan.

Valorant is coming to consoles but won’t have crossplay
Key art for Valorant on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Valorant is coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as soon as next week with a limited beta test. Riot Games announced these long-awaited ports for its competitive hero shooter during Summer Game Fest 2024. Notably, while Valorant on consoles will feature cross-progression, it won't have crossplay.

The lack of crossplay may come as a disappointment to some players who hope to party up with their friends on PC; Riot Games says that it made this decision "to maintain Valorant's standard for competitive integrity." It wouldn't be fair for those with a controller to face off against players using a keyboard and mouse to control the game, after all. It also wouldn't make sense because Riot Games is not only adapting Valorant's control scheme for the Xbox and PlayStation controllers but reworking some gameplay features as well. Namely, it added a new feature called Focus that makes hip-fire feel more precise on a controller. Valorant Production Director Arnar Gylfason elaborated on this in a comment provided to Digital Trends.

Amazon’s ambitious MMO New World is finally coming to PS5 and Xbox this October
Key art for New World Aeternum.

Amazon is finally bringing its MMO New World to consoles this October, and that’s coming as part of a larger rework of the fantasy game called New World: Aeternum.

When New World hits consoles on October 15, it will also add crossplay, so you can group up with your friends on different platforms. That said, it won’t feature cross-progression, as the characters you make will be locked to whatever platform you made them on. The controls and UI have also been reworked to function better with a controller, and Amazon Games expects New World to keep update parity across all three platforms starting this October.
