Truly a teaser: The ‘Resident Evil 7’ demo won’t be in the final game

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is a massive departure for Capcom’s flagship franchise, replacing third-person zombie killing with a more atmospheric first-person experience, and dumping classic characters like Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine for a new “everyman” protagonist. Its demo, available right after Sony’s E3 press conference on Monday, clearly took a page out of the canceled Silent Hills‘ “Playable Teaser,” but if you expect to see this scene again come January, think again: It’s not in the game.

E3 2016: I like playing shooters, too. But can’t we do better?

Speaking to Polygon, director Koshi Nakanishi said that while the demo is “full representative” of the final game, the scene will not actually be in the game to avoid spoilers.

It sounds strikingly similar to P.T., which was likely to also be a one-off demo that wouldn’t be in the finished Silent Hills, but Nakanishi stressed that Resident Evil 7 will still feature plenty of weapons — it’s not going after the “just run” horror audience that has grown so much in recent years.

While the demo may not make it into the finished product, we were told by Capcom at E3 that it serves as a prologue for Resident Evil 7 and features a different protagonist than that of the rest of the game. And while the lack of familiar faces may make the game feel more like a reboot than a sequel, it will still be canon to the series.

Resident Evil 7 might just win the award for “best booth” at this year’s show, creating a terrifying house complete with dim lights, peeling paint, and for some reason, multiple front doors. If Capcom decided to build a Resident Evil theme park with multiple buildings to explore, we’d be all over it.

Resident Evil 7 arrives to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 24. The entire game will be playable in PlayStation VR.

Resident Evil 4 demo makes an obscure Wii game a central part of the remake
Leon parries a chainsaw villager in Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 4 is a few weeks away, but eager fans can play its opening chapter right now thanks to the newly released Chainsaw Demo. The non-timed demo allows fans to experience the upcoming remake's opening, which sees Leon S. Kennedy fending off a town full of angry villagers. It offers a taste of the full game's reworked combat system, but it also reveals some very significant story changes in the new version.

Like the original Resident Evil 4, the demo opens with a voice-over from Leon recapping previous Resident Evil games. The contents of those two openings are radically different, though.

If you're a Capcom fan, you're about to have a very good 2023. The publisher currently has some major plans for the first half of the year, with tentpole releases like Resident Evil 4 and Street Fighter 6 on the horizon. With so much in the works, it only makes sense that the company would want to hold its own Nintendo Direct-style livestream earlier than its typical June spot this year.

Nintendo confirms that it won’t be part of E3 2023

Nintendo has confirmed reports that it won't be participating in E3 2023, meaning the gaming trade show will be missing one of its key vendors when it returns in-person this June.
"We approach our involvement in any event on a case-by-case basis and are always considering various ways to engage with our fans," a Nintendo spokesperson said in a statement to The Verge. "Since this year’s E3 show didn’t fit into our plans, we have made the decision to not participate. However, we have been and continue to be a strong supporter of the ESA [Entertainment Software Association] and E3."
After taking 2020 and 2022 off and being digital-only in 2021, this year was supposed to mark the grand return of E3, which was once a dominant game industry trade show that attracted every big video game company. Although Sony hasn't participated since 2019, it still came as a shock in January when IGN reported that both Nintendo and Microsoft would not be attending E3 this year as well. It appears that the report is true, as Microsoft has not confirmed any E3-related events outside of its independently run Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase.
Nintendo skipping E3 2023 not only takes away a vendor that dominated the show floor in previous years, but also raises questions about whether or not the company will hold an exciting Nintendo Direct around then. While Nintendo typically holds a big showcase with lots of first-party game announcements around June every year, in 2022 it only held a third-party driven Partner Showcase in June. Now that we know it won't be at E3 2023, we're left to wonder when exactly then next big Nintendo Direct will be.
E3 2023 will take place between June 13 and June 16, but don't expect Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft to have a big presence there.
