Resident Evil 0 remake premieres for consoles and PCs in January

A remake of Capcom’s survival horror classic Resident Evil 0 is bound for Xbox and PlayStation consoles in January alongside a digital release for PC platforms, the publisher

announced this week.

Originally released for Nintendo’s GameCube in 2002 and later ported to the Nintendo Wii, Resident Evil 0 is a third-person action game with a unique “Partner Zapping System” that lets players swap between its two playable protagonists in real time.

The release serves as a prequel to the events in the original Resident Evil, and features a twisting storyline that revolves around S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team member Rebecca Chambers.

Resident Evil 0: HD Remaster follows up on the successful Resident Evil HD Remaster released for consoles and PCs earlier this year. Like its predecessor, Resident Evil 0: HD Remaster features updated visuals, widescreen support, and a new control scheme.

The upgraded port of Resident Evil 0 will also allow players to assume control of series antagonist Albert Wesker in a new gameplay mode. Wesker boasts superhuman abilities, making for a drastically different gameplay experience that should appeal to veteran players.

Players who pre-order Resident Evil 0 on every platform except for the Xbox 360 will receive a selection of exclusive in-game costumes at launch. Rebecca Chambers can optionally wear a Resident Evil 0-branded t-shirt or a cheerleader outfit during gameplay, while her partner Billy can dress up in an exclusive “Wolf Force” costume inspired by Capcom’s classic run-and-gun shooter Mercs.

The remastered versions of Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0 will also be available in an “Origins Collection” retail edition for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. A North American release for Origins Collection will arrive in January.

Resident Evil 0: HD Remaster premieres digitally for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms via Steam on January 19th, 2016.

You can now play the original Resident Evil on PC in all its retro glory

Capcom has made it easy to experience older Resident Evil titles with the help of its many recent remakes, but you were mostly out of luck on modern platforms if you wanted to actually play the original versions of those titles. Well, the GOG PC gaming storefront announced Wednesday that you'll soon be able to play the first three Resident Evil games in their (mostly) original forms.

Right now, however, only Resident Evil is available. For $10, you can play the iconic 1997 survival horror game with just a few quality-of-life improvements to make it run well on your Windows 10 or 11 PC. The GOG version makes some very small changes to the gameplay, including improving the timing of cutscenes and making it easier to exit the game, and it now has support for most modern controllers.

Continuing the trend started by Resident Evil Village, Capcom is bringing more Resident Evil games to the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, starting with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

The first-person shooter and soft reboot of the long-running horror franchise will be hitting the iPhone 15 Pro series and all iPads and Macs with an M1 chip or larger on July 2. The publisher also revealed that the Resident Evil 2 remake will be coming to Apple devices in the future, but is still in development.

Hatsune Miku’s Crypt of the NecroDancer crossover is a perfect fit
Hatsune Miku sings in Crypt of the NecroDancer DLC trailer.

Vocaloid idol Hatsune Miku's next video game crossover was announced and released today, and it's the perfect kind of collaboration for the character. If you buy a new $2 DLC, you can now play as Crypton Future's popular virtual singer in the PC and PS4 versions of Crypt of the NecroDancer.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a roguelike dungeon crawler that moves to the beat of the music. You can see why Hatsune Miku would be such a good fit for a game like this. The digital idol has a long history in the gaming space, both through her own series of rhythm games and guest appearances in titles like Persona 4: Dancing All Night, Just Dance, Ninjala, and Fall Guys. Likewise, Brace Yourself Games and Crypt of the NecroDancer are no strangers to crossovers; Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda was a full-fledged spin-off using music from Nintendo's series that came out in 2019.
