Silent Hill 2 remake players just discovered a huge secret

One of the most confounding additions to the Silent Hill 2 remake are the Polaroid photos you find throughout the game. They’re abstract, often depicting blurry close-ups of things like flowers, footprints, dirty walls, and other hard to dentify objects. They work as a collectible, but the game doesn’t offer an explanation. However, one Reddit user seems to have cracked the code. Not only do they feature a secret message, but it seems to confirm a longtime fan theory about the nature of Silent Hill and protagonist James Sunderland’s story.

A post on the Silent Hill subreddit by user DaleRobinson breaks down the actual code hidden across each photo. If you look at the numbers on the back of each photo and line them up in numerical order, you’ll spot a pattern. Each photo has up to six subjects. If you count the letters based on the number of objects, record a letter. Go through all 26 and it’ll spell out a message: “You’ve been here for two decades.”

The puzzle answer was confirmed by Bloober Team creative director Mateusz Lenart on X (formerly Twitter), who said the team was worried it would be “too hard” to decipher. “I really wanted to make it subtle when I was painting those photos,” Lenart wrote.

What the puzzle answer means is a little less straightforward. On one hand, it could just be an easter egg that refers to how it’s been a little over 20 years since Silent Hill 2 released on the PlayStation 2. On the other, it could confirm a semipopular theory: that James is stuck in a loop.

Warning: Slight spoilers for Silent Hill 2 and the remake ahead.

It may not be a “time loop” specifically, but if Silent Hill depicts a personal hell for the people lured to it (James, Angela, Eddie, etc.), then it’s possible they’re stuck there until they come to terms with their trauma and crimes. There are multiple possible endings in Silent Hill 2, and only one of them (minus the joke endings) has James leaving Silent Hill. Players have long debated which one is the “canon” ending, but a loop would explain how all of them have happened in different attempts.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Official Trailer

The Silent Hill 2 remake has also been dropping hints that it’s actually a pseudo-sequel to the original. Players have noticed bodies that look oddly like James and that weren’t in the original game. I spotted one quickly after James enters the town and is holding the old-school map. There are also new notes scattered around that seem to have been written by James. It would also explain why James has been aged up in the remake, and why he looked much older in a previous version seen in trailers.

If this is what the photo secret is referring to, then James has been trapped in Silent Hill for 20 years. It’s a new twist on one of the best games of all time.

For his part, Lenart doesn’t confirm or deny any of this. In a response to a user on X who posted that “the loop theory is canon,” Lenart said: “Is it?”

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake might divide retro and modern RPG fans
An RPG party stands in a throne room in Dragon Quest 3: HD-2D Remake.

After a long wait, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is finally coming to PC and consoles -- and yes, that’s its official title. The NES revival launches on November 14 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. An HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 is set to follow in 2025.

Ahead of its release date reveal during today’s Nintendo Direct, I got a deeper look into all the changes coming to the game, as well as a bit of hands-on playtime. Along with making some key quality of life tweaks, the remake also features some radical changes to story and structure that will bridge it to the first two Dragon Quest games (both of which happen after 3, chronologically). Those modern touches are paired with very faithful decisions that leave the core combat of the original surprisingly untouched – a move that may divide purists and newer RPG fans.
Modern meets retro
First revealed in 2021, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remaster is a project from Octopath Traveler 2 studio Team Asano and Artdink. We already knew that it would give an NES classic a fresh look thanks to Team Asano's signature HD-2D art style, but details on the game have been scarce over the past few years. That seemed surprising for a remake like this, but it turns out that the project is much more ambitious than originally advertised.

Silent Hill creator’s new game Slitterhead prioritizes action over scares
One of the rarity characters in Bokeh Game Studio's Slitterhead.

Slitterhead was the weirdest game I stumbled onto at Summer Game Fest this year. Tucked away in a small cabana at the back of the event, it was a game few people attending even seemed to know was there. I felt compelled to check it out before the event ended, as if I were possessed. I managed to get an on-the-fly appointment to see it on the last day of Summer Game Fest, eager to dissect what I saw in its action-focused gameplay trailer. That decision would bring me face-to-face with Keiichiro Toyama, who helped create iconic franchises like Silent Hill, Siren, and Gravity Rush, and has now moved on to make Slitterhead at Bokeh Game Studio.

We're in a survival-horror renaissance now thanks to Capcom's Resident Evil remakes and standout indies like Crow Country, but Toyama tells Digital Trends he's now leaning into making a full-on action horror game. He believes that's what players today prefer, and Slitterhead is a result of that. With its focus on combat, a parry deflection mechanic, and a possession system that lets players move between bodies during battle, it felt like I had stumbled upon a creepy hidden gem at Summer Game Fest.
A Siren spiritual successor
Although Toyama is best known for creating the first Silent Hill, Slitterhead has more in common with the second horror franchise he worked on: Siren. That series was a creepy survival horror game where players could "sightjack" NPCs to learn what they can see and hear. That gameplay concept, as well as the idea of telling another ensemble story with a lot of characters, is something Toyama and other returning developers from Siren want to explore more with Slitterhead.

Sony just put one final nail in the PlayStation VR2’s coffin
The PlayStation VR2 sits on a table next to Sense controllers.

PlayStation VR2 has been murdered. The culprit: Astro Bot.

My favorite announcement of Sony's May 30 State of Play was Astro Bot, a new 3D platformer from Team Asobi that celebrates PlayStation history. It looks incredibly charming and stands out from the typical narrative-action games like Stellar Blade that Sony tends to release these days. That said, my excitement also comes with disappointment as it does not appear that the game will support PlayStation VR2. (Digital Trends reached out to Sony to confirm that was the case but has not gotten a response at the time of publishing this story.)
