18 years later, Snake returns to mobile phones

Mobile gaming has come full circle with a sequel to Snake

snake creators return with sequel to classic mobile game rumilussnake

If you owned a cellphone in the late ’90s or early 2000s, you might remember playing Snake to pass the time. Snake creator Taneli Armanto has decided to create a sequel to the game that millions around the world played on their Nokia phones almost two decades ago.

The original Snake game was released in 1997. Eighteen years later, Armanto and Rumilus Design have teamed up to create Snake Rewind. You do way more in this version of the game than just collect a fruit represented as a dot on old Nokia phones. Screenshots of the game include players collecting multiple dots and powerups to get the highest score possible.

“Created together with Rumilus Design, Snake Rewind takes the iconic elements and intuitive gameplay from the original Snake game and combines them with cool visual effects, sounds, and innovative new features. The game can be immediately picked up and enjoyed by everyone, while offering many fun and challenging goals and discoveries for a long-lasting experience,” the press release said.

When you played the original game, if you crashed into a wall or into your own tail, the game was over. However, in Snake Rewind, you can rewind the snake after crashing to continue the game. You can also get powerups such as the Fruit Magnet, Trailblazer, and the Score Multiplier. In addition, there will be a “fruit store” where boosters and other items can be purchased and upgraded for use in the game. There will be 10 levels with their own visuals and music that can be unlocked by completing challenging missions. Thanks to the Internet, you can also compete against your friends and the rest of the world for the highest score.

Snake Rewind will be available for free on May 14, 2015, on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. The game will also include in-app purchases.

Stardew Valley 1.6 has finally arrived on consoles and mobile
Special Orders board in Stardew Valley.

Stardew Valley console and mobile players will want to start a new farm soon. The long-awaited 1.6 update is finally available for all platforms on Monday, bringing with it a new farm type, more dialogue with NPCs, new events, and too many other things to count.

The 1.6 update launched for PC players on March 19, so console and mobile players have been waiting almost eight months for the release. In July, developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that it was taking longer than expected. The following month, he wrote in another post that the ports have been the "primary focus" for the team. He had even stopped working on the Stardew follow-up Haunted Chocolatier to get the console and mobile updates finished.

Pokémon’s free mobile card game is nostalgic fun, but watch your wallet
A trading card battle on mobile.

What's sure to be mobile gaming's next big thing is here. Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is out now and it brings the classic tabletop deckbuilding game to your phone. It's a free app that lets players open booster packs, collect cards, and play a streamlined version of the card game. On top of that, it's full of social hooks and ways for players to show off their favorite cards. It's about as much of a slam dunk as you could imagine for a mobile game, to the point where I'm surprised it's taken The Pokémon Company this long to make it.

Nostalgia is an easy path to victory, but does that make for a good game? Based on my time with it so far, I can see some immediate appeal that's sure to keep me logging in consistently for at least a few weeks. It's the kind of free download that comes with a big red buyer beware, though. This is a game designed to vacuum up money in ways that can feel a bit uncomfortable. If you're the kind of person who gets impatient anytime you're presented with a timer, download it at your own risk.
Gotta collect 'em all
Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket essentially looks to capture the full experience of the Pokémon trading card game and stuff it into a mobile app. In that sense, it's a success. As soon as I boot it up and create my account, it quickly throws a five-card booster pack my way that I tear it open by swiping the screen. All the excitement I felt as a kid doing the same with real packs flooded in instantly. Just as I did back then, I find myself marveling at the art. Classic cards from my youth appear here, including the elegant Hitmonchan card I treasured as a kid, but I'm just as enamored with the art I've never seen. When I pull a card that features a top-to-bottom art spread showing Digletts burrowing through the card, I'm hooked.

How to fast charge your iPhone
iPhone 12 Mini with charger

While they may not be some of the longest-lasting smartphones on the market, modern iPhones boast more than respectable battery life that should be able to get you through an entire day's use without breaking too much of a sweat. Of course, that assumes a lot of things — including a battery that's still relatively new and in good health, plus a usage pattern that doesn't include all-day streaming or gaming.

But for some people, overnight charging isn't going to cut it, and you'll want to get your battery topped up again as quickly as you can so you can get back in action. Thankfully, every iPhone released in the past six years supports much faster charging, but the downside is that with very few exceptions, Apple has never supplied you with the right adapter to get the best possible charging speeds from your iPhone.
