Fan modders turn Sonic Generations into a 3D Mario game

(RELEASE)Sonic Generations Mod: Super Mario Generations
Dedicated modders in the Sonic the Hedgehog community have released a comprehensive mod for the PC version of 2011’s

Sonic Generations, replacing the game’s cast with characters from Nintendo’s Mario series and universe.

The mod fully replaces Sonic with Mario during all action sequences, swapping the game’s formerly hedgehog-centric animations with character models and rigging inspired by 3D entries in the Super Mario series.

Super Mario Generations additionally replaces characters in Sonic Generations‘ hub world, filling out the cast with familiar faces like Donkey Kong, Toad, Wario, and Waluigi.

While players control Mario by default, the mod also features Luigi as a playable character. Although Yoshi was originally slated for the mod’s playable lineup, the current version sidelines Mario’s dinosaur pal to the hub world.

The team behind Super Mario Generations also overhauled the original game’s presentation to more closely align it with Mario series standards. The HUD has been redesigned, graphical effects were redone, and sound effects and music files have been exchanged with more thematically appropriate replacements. Players can also expect to see new bosses during the game’s campaign.

Released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PCs in 2011, Sonic Generations bridges the gap between Sonic’s classic and modern adventures, offering a mixture of 2D and 3D gameplay segments. The Mario series evolved along a similar path, making the mod an ideal fit for Nintendo’s mascot character.

Sega followed up on Sonic Generations with Sonic Lost World, a Wii U series entry that took inspiration from the planetoid-hopping gameplay featured in Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy. A PC version of Lost World launched this week, opening the door for similar mods featuring Mario and his friends.

Super Mario Generations is available as a free download, and requires the full PC version of Sonic Generations in order to function.

Our favorite Switch games of 2023: Tears of the Kingdom, Mario, and much more
Link stands behind text that says Best Switch Games 2023.

If 2023 was our last full year with the Nintendo Switch, what a heck of a sendoff it got.

The rumor mill has been buzzing for months now, claiming that Nintendo plans to reveal and release its Switch successor next year. While that’s a rumor you should take with some skepticism, there’s good reason to believe it may happen. Nintendo reportedly showed off the system to developers behind closed doors at Gamescom this year, and the Switch’s current 2024 lineup feels like the final drop we’d get right before a new system. The Switch could be old news this time next year.

Play these 3DS and Wii U games before Nintendo shutters their online features
Captain Falcon in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

In April 2024, Nintendo will discontinue online services across its Wii U and 3DS consoles. While the eShops for both systems were shut down in March 2023, this will remove the online functionality of many apps and games, making gaming on either of these platforms an almost entirely offline experience. As a result, many games on those systems will lose important features and never be quite the same to play afterward. So, you'll need to get some gaming time in by next April if you want to refresh and preserve the memories of playing online on these two underdog Nintendo platforms.
While the aforementioned eShop closures make it impossible to buy new games digitally, plenty of games that you likely already own physical copies of or already had downloaded have online features that won't work properly come April 2024. As such, we recommend you play the following games online before the discontinuation of those services next year.
Kid Icarus Uprising

Kid Icarus Uprising is mostly remembered for its entertaining story, charismatic characters, and odd controls, but it also features a surprisingly fun multiplayer experience in Together Mode. In multiplayer, up to six players can use powerful weapons and abilities from the main adventure in one of two modes. Free-for-all lets players loose on a map, tasking them with racking up the most kills within a set time limit. Light vs. Dark is more complex, as two teams of three face off until enough players are defeated that one respawns as an angel; when that powered-up angel is killed, the match is over.
While far from balanced, Kid Icarus Uprising's Together Mode is one of the most entertaining competitive multiplayer experiences exclusive to 3DS. It can be played locally, using bots to fill in empty spots, so thankfully it won't stop working entirely. Still, it's not easy in 2023 to come across multiple people near you who have copies of Kid Icarus Uprising and want to play. As such, check out this cult classic 3DS game's hidden gem of a mode before praying that the rumors of a remaster eventually become true.

This breezy 3D platformer wears its simplicity as a badge of honor
Koa runs on an island in Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara.

My adoration for exploring and collecting in games is well-known to anyone who has ever heard me wax poetic about Soulslikes. Surprisingly, though, it's rarely the punishing bosses or deep role-playing systems that suck me in the most -- it's the "Aha!" moments of finding a well-hidden item on a ledge most folks would never notice or stumbling upon an illusory wall that leads me somewhere wholly new. But this love of thoroughly examining levels and finding their secrets was first sparked in me with the significantly brighter and cheerier platformer genre almost three decades ago. There's really nothing that makes me happier than becoming entranced in a happy, colorful adventure that lets me sink back into that childlike wonder I experienced all those years ago.

That's why I'm always thrilled to find indie games like Chibig's Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara that genuinely capture the playfulness of the titles I grew up with. Similar to other lovely platformers like New Super Lucky's Tale or A Hat in Time, it may lack some of the AAA flourishes of the genre-defining Super Mario Odyssey, but it makes its case by flawlessly nailing the fundamentals: a memorable and lovable mascot, diverse level design, tight controls, and a cohesive artistic vision. That attention to such core principles keeps it from suffering the same fate as the dozens of low-budget releases each year that often suffocate beneath the weight of their own ambition.
