Splitgate’s map editor lets eight players create at once

Splitgate season 1 launches today and it brings new modes, skins, and battle passes. Most notably, developer 1047 added a map editor tool to the game that allows up to eight players to edit simultaneously.

Splitgate Beta Season 1 Announcement Teaser

The free-to-play shooter, best described as “Halo meets Portal,” became a viral sensation last year, which pushed back back some of the game’s updates as 1047 worked to scale its servers up. With Season 1, the game will receive its most significant update yet.

The star of the show is the map editor. The tool allows players to place objects to create their own multiplayer maps. They can place both simple shapes and walls that players can shoot portals onto. The editor is launching in an early state with seemingly few options available when it comes to art style, but 1047 says it’ll build out more features based on feedback.

The most notable detail about the editor is that it lets up to eight players work on a map at once. Players can’t touch an object if another player is moving or editing it, but otherwise all players are free to make changes at the same time. All maps save locally, which means that each player could save their own version of it and make changes to it later if they choose.

Maps will support bots and any player will be able to jump into a custom map. There won’t be a specific way to rate or sort maps, though 1047 is considering features like that for future updates.

Alongside the map editor, Splitgate Season 1 adds two new modes. A “one flag” capture the flag mode is coming to the game, where one team defends and the other tries to snag the enemy’s flag. Players can not use portals while carrying a flag.

Evolution, the second new mode, is a new variant of Showdown. Its an elimination mode where the first team to win three rounds is victorious. The twist is that teams get set loadouts at the start of each round. When one team wins a round, the losers move up a loadout tier, giving them better weapons. Its essentially a hybrid of Showdown and Gun Game where the playing field balances between each round.

The developers have also experimented with the game’s art style for the new season in an attempt to make the game look more “AAA.” The season’s new aesthetic can be seen in its new battle pass, which features white skins that evoke Mercy from Overwatch.

In addition to its new 100-tier season pass, the game is also introducing a 10-tier referral pass. Every time a player refers a new player to the game, they’ll move up a level and get some unique rewards.

Splitgate Season 1 is available starting today on all supported platforms.

8BitDo created a console-agnostic controller for players with limited mobility
8bitdo is launching bluetooth controller for gamers with limited mobility lite se

8BitDo, a Hong Kong-based gaming hardware company, has announced that it is launching the 8BitDo Lite SE, a Bluetooth controller specially designed to make gaming more accessible to gamers with limited mobility.

The controller was made possible by a collaboration between 8BitDo and Andreas Karlsson to help his son Oskar, who has spinal muscular atrophy type 2 (SMA2), a rare neuromuscular disorder that affects the nerve cells controlling motor neurons. In other words, the disorder doesn't allow him to stand or walk independently, so he uses a wheelchair as a means of navigating the world around him. It also makes playing video games with regular controllers difficult, so Andreas reached out to 8BitDo, who helped the father-son duo test out various prototype controllers before settling on the Lite SE design shown in the video below.

Splitgate season 2 might pull you away from Halo Infinite
Splitgate characters fighting one another

Halo Infinite isn’t the only shooter that’s getting a second season this spring. Splitgate Season 2 starts tomorrow and it looks to regain some momentum with new modes, cosmetics, and visual upgrades. It’s a well-timed update, as its larger peers struggle to keep fans hooked. Halo Infinite’s Lone Wolves season has been widely criticized for its lack of new content, while Battlefield 2042 is removing one of its few modes entirely. By comparison, Splitgate’s new update is exciting, bringing some fun new ideas to the portal-based shooter.

I went hands-on with this season’s new content, trying out all three of the game’s upcoming modes: Lockdown, Hot Zone, and Juggernaut. Each one is a welcome addition to the game’s growing roster of playlists, which continues to show that developer 1047 Games is committed to its long-term plan to transform the indie into a “AAA” shooter.
Hold those zones
Of the three new modes, two of them revolve around capturing zones. The pace of each is very different, though. First, I jump into a round of Hot Zone, a mode that features one rotating “hill” that players need to capture and defend to earn points. It’s a fairly standard zone control mode that moves the action around the map, but it’s an especially clean fit with Splitgate’s unique portal feature.

The Sims 4 now lets players use custom pronouns
A crowd of Sims attends an in-game musical festival.

EA and developer Maxis have announced they added a new feature in The Sims 4 that finally allows players to customize pronouns for their Sims characters.

EA and Maxis wrote in their blog post on Tuesday that they have been working to add custom pronouns since last year, after receiving feedback from the Sims community. To make that feature a reality, they worked with two leading LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations, GLAAD and the It Gets Better Project, to research and understand how pronouns are used among transgender and non-binary players. In doing so, they learned the contexts in which binary gender pronouns were used in the game and worked to develop a means of customizing pronouns to make the gameplay experience more inclusive for everyone.
