The Last of Us demo hitches a ride to retail with God of War: Ascension

God of War: Ascension is the latest entry in the long-running, fan-favorite God of War franchise. It stars Kratos, the titular deity, and focuses primarily on his quest to slay all manner of beasties both mythological and largely fabricated to fit extant gameplay mechanisms. In sum, it’s one of the most brutal, action-packed gaming series of our modern era.

The Last of Us is a comparatively subdued survival horror game. It’s a brand new intellectual property, so we have scant knowledge of what the title might have in store, but from what we’ve seen of The Last of Us to date it appears to be akin to Cormac McCarthy’s The Road: Two people, one older, one younger, are pitted against a dystopian world chock full of people and environmental hazards that want them dead. Where God of War: Ascension is heavily focused on gruesome combat, The Last of Us is more reserved, offering only periodic bursts of violence meant to punctuate the tension of the rest of the experience.

Other than the common “both of these are video games” denominator, God of War: Ascension and The Last of Us are as different as can be, yet the former will soon deliver us our first real taste of the latter. According to a new entry on the official PlayStation.blog, when God of War: Ascension reaches retail on March 12 it will include an opportunity to play a demo of The Last of Us.

That word — opportunity — is the operative word here, as unlike the recent Zone of Enders HD Collection, which included a playable demo of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, when players crack open their new copies of God of War: Ascension, they won’t actually find that Last of Us demo inside the box. Instead, once you’ve inserted the God of War: Ascension disc into your PlayStation 3, a Last of Us menu option will appear in the “Games” section of your PS3’s XMB dashboard which, according to the PlayStation.blog, will include “details on how you can obtain The Last of Us demo for free as soon as it becomes available.”

And when will this demo become available? We have no idea. Sony’s representatives promptly offered a polite “we can’t say anything just yet, but please stay tuned,” and none of the developers behind either The Last of Us or God of War: Ascension are talking. Obviously the demo won’t be available prior to March 12, but after that we expect the thing to appear pretty quickly. After all, The Last of Us is still scheduled for release on May 7, and that leaves scant little time for the game to bolster its playerbase prior to its retail debut.

On the other hand, this nebulous demo offers us a nice opportunity to gauge how confident Sony is in The Last of Us. If the publisher opts to release the demo as quickly as possible it must feel that the game is good enough to stand on its merits. If Sony instead waits until moments prior to the game’s release to push out a demo it’s quite likely that the publisher realizes it has a bomb on its hands and is trying to mitigate damage and salvage any sales it possibly can. Fingers crossed for the former option, huh?

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered turns the original game into a cruel punch line
Lev draws a bow in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.

It was a sunny spring day in 2020, amid the social isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, when I beat The Last of Us Part 2. As its long credits rolled, I paced around my small apartment living room, unpacking what had transpired. I adored the sequel’s first two acts and its multifaceted discussion of cyclical violence, but I found myself critical of its California-set finale. It seemed to backtrack on all the nuance of Ellie and Abby’s struggle by introducing a definitively evil faction that I wouldn’t feel bad about shooting with a machine gun. It was a discordant note at the end of a symphony, but I was determined to dig below my surface reading and try to understand what Naughty Dog was going for. It had earned that.

That’s when I was hit by the one moment of the game I’ll never forget. As I was deep in reflection, the credits wrapped up, and a final bit of text splashed on the screen. As a reward for finishing the brutal story, I had unlocked New Game+ mode, which would encourage me to replay it again with all my upgraded guns. The benefit of the doubt I’d given Naughty Dog went out the window; did the studio even understand its own game?

How to permanently upgrade stats in God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla
Kratos standing by a stone monolith.

Despite all falling into the roguelike genre, every game within that category handles progression differently. Some have no permanent upgrades and instead force the player to simply rely on their skills and luck during each run, while others dole out buffs and tools that the player can accumulate over multiple runs to make each one a bit easier.

God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla falls into the latter category thanks to Master Seals. These special rewards allow Kratos to get permanent buffs to his base stats, easing the difficulty a bit for those who need it. Just getting the seals isn't enough, and not even Mimir will give you a clue on how to spend them, so we'll help you return Kratos to his godly status.

How to start the God of War: Ragnarok Valhalla DLC
Kratos outside the gates of Valhalla.

Over a year after launch, God of War: Ragnarok got a surprise addition of new content in the form of the Valhalla DLC. Revealed at The Game Awards 2023 and available for free less than a week later, this new adventure takes place after the conclusion of the main story and sees Kratos travel to the titular realm of the gods. Billed as a primarily rogue-like experience, there is quite a bit more to this DLC than some may be expecting.

Since it does technically follow the events of the main game, many players may wonder if they need to first see the story through before they can access it, or at what point it will become available. We may not be as wise as Mimir, but we can share some knowledge on how to start the Valhalla DLC in God of War: Ragnarok.
