3 new Xbox Game Pass games you should play this weekend

It’s Black Friday weekend, so there’s a good chance that you just picked up an Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S and are planning to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Standard. If so, you’ll need to decide what you should play first. While first-party games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 or Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 are good choices, some other new Xbox Game Pass titles are also worth your time this weekend.

If you’ve been on an Aliens kick this year thanks to Alien: Romulus and the announcement that Alien Isolation is finally getting a sequel, then you’ll want to check out Aliens: Dark Descent. This is a real-time strategy game where players control a small squad of Colonial Marines dispatched to Planet Lethe to take care of a Xenomorph threat. It’s a tense, exhilarating title that finds a middle ground between the bombastic shootouts of Aliens: Fireteam Elite and the quiet horror of Alien: Isolation. Aliens: Dark Descent flew under the radar when it launched last year, so I’m happy it has another chance at notoriety by getting added to Game Pass.

Aliens: Dark Descent is available with Game Pass Standard, PC Game Pass, or Game Pass Ultimate. It’s also on PS4 and PS5.

Red Candle Games

Nine Sols is an underrated Metroidvania platformer from Taiwanese developer Red Candle Games released earlier this year. It just came to consoles and was added to Xbox Game Pass. This has been a great year for Metroidvanias with excellent combat, and this is yet another title to add to that pile. Its world and style, which combine cyberpunk aesthetics with an Eastern mythology influence, also give Nine Sols a memorable vibe, making for one of 2024’s biggest sleeper hits.

Nine Sols is available via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. It’s also now on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.

Little Kitty, Big City

Double Dagger Studio

Little Kitty, Big City made waves when it hit Xbox Game Pass earlier this year because it’s an entertaining open-ended game where players can explore and interact with a lot of things as a cute little cat. Unfortunately, when the Game Pass Standard and Ultimate split happened, Standard subscribers lost access to this gem. That changed earlier this month when it was added back to the Game Pass Standard catalog. Regardless of which tier it’s on now, this is one of the best indie games on Xbox Game Pass and worth checking out if you haven’t played it yet.

Little Kitty, Big City is available through PC Game Pass, Game Pass Standard, and Game Pass Ultimate. It’s also on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to try this weekend (October 18-20)
South Park The Fractured But Whole

While the first half of October was fairly light on new Xbox Game Pass additions, the back half of the month is a lot more exciting. Of course, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the month's biggest release, but that's still a week away. Meanwhile, this week saw two great RPGs and an excellent indie game hit Microsoft's subscription service. If you're wondering what you should be playing this weekend, all three of these new Xbox Game Pass additions are worthy of your time.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
South Park: The Fractured But Whole Gameplay Trailer - Gamescom 2016

While this year's South Park: Snow Day was a disappointment, the two Ubisoft-published games that preceded it narratively are stellar. One of those, the superhero-themed South Park: The Fractured But Whole, just came to Xbox Game Pass. This game perfectly captures the handcrafted look of the show with its art and the franchise's crass humor through its increasingly ridiculous story about Cartman, a new kid, and their other friends pretending to be superheroes. It's a surprisingly well-made grid-based tactical RPG, making it a significantly better game than it may seem on the surface.

3 new PS Plus games you should play this weekend (October 18-20)
A zombie crawls toward a player on a boardwalk in Dead Island 2.

It's the middle of the month, so another batch of games just came to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalog. There's a solid mix of scary games here just in time for Halloween and hidden gems in the PS4, PS5, and PSVR2's libraries that are well worth your time. If you're wondering what you should play this weekend, I can safely say that you'll have a good time with any of these three games.
Dead Island 2
Dead Island 2 - Extended Gameplay Reveal [4K Official]

It can be hard for zombie games to stand out because so many exist. Dead Island 2 had the benefit of being infamous because it was constantly delayed and shifting developers during development. It finally launched almost seven years after its initial announcement. Despite those development woes, Dambuster Studios and Deep Silver's Dead Island 2 is a surprisingly solid action game. It stands out because of its particularly satisfying melee combat and extraordinarily detailed dismemberment system. Dead Island 2 is a fitting game to play ahead of Halloween and definitely the headliner for October's batch of PS Plus additions.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to play this weekend (October 11-13)
A screenshot from Inscryption.

We're in somewhat of a lull for Xbox Game Pass right now. While Xbox heavily marketed Metaphor: ReFantazio and launched Persona 3 Reload into its subscription service earlier in 2024, Metaphor:ReFantazio is not on Xbox Game Pass on day one. Thankfully, an all-timer of a horror indie game came to the service this past week, just in time for Halloween. Some other great RPGs also arrived during Tokyo Game Show 2024, so you can check those out on Xbox Game Pass if you're looking for something new to play on the subscription service.
Inscryption
Inscryption - Announcement Trailer (2020)

If you're looking for something spookier to play on Xbox Game Pass this month, then Inscryption is the optimal choice. This indie game became critically acclaimed upon its release in 2021 because of how it wasn't afraid to blend genres and break the fourth wall as players try to break out of a card game they're playing in a remote cabin. It's best to go into Inscryption unspoiled, so I'll just recommend you check it out via PC, One Xbox Series X/S, or Xbox Cloud Gaming with your Game Pass Ultimate subscription. It's also on PlayStation 4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
