Microsoft announced November’s downloadable freebies for Xbox Live Gold subscribers, revealing that the service’s first-ever batch of backward-compatible Xbox 360 games will be given away starting next month.

The lineup effectively gives Xbox One owners access to four free games in total throughout November, doubling the platform’s previous monthly allotment.

Starting on November 1st, Xbox Live Gold subscribers can download the Xbox One version of Pneuma: Breath of Life free of charge. Originally released in February, Pneuma is an existentialist first-person puzzler that puts players in control of a witty god, Pneuma, who is able to shape his surroundings using psychic powers.

Also on tap for next month’s giveaway is Knight Squad, a multiplayer action game that makes its Xbox One debut as part of the Games With Gold program. Described by creator Chainsawesome Games as “Bomberman meets Gauntlet,” Knight Squad is a hectic, overhead-view arena combat game with multiple cooperative and competitive versus modes of play.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners alike can also download Codemasters’ rally racer Dirt 3 for free starting next month via Games With Gold. Released in 2011 as part of the Colin McRae Rally series, Dirt 3 features detailed physics simulation and realistic drifting action across multiple racetracks in Europe, Africa and the United States.

Dungeon Siege III is the last featured title in next month’s Games With Gold lineup. Developed by Fallout: New Vegas and South Park: The Stick of Truth studio Obsidian Entertainment, Dungeon Siege III boasts an in-depth combat system and several different character classes, ensuring a lengthy quest.

Pneuma: Breath of Life and Dirt 3 will be available as free downloads for Xbox Live Gold subscribers starting on November 1st. Knight Squad is up for grabs from November 16th through December 15th, and Dungeon Siege III is free to download from November 16th through the end of the month.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to check out this weekend (September 20-22)
Key art for Frostpunk 2.

As the fall season approaches, the number of high-profile Xbox Game Pass additions is rising. That said, the service also does a great job of appealing to players who are fans of more specific, niche genres. September 2024 has been particularly kind to Xbox Game Pass subscribers who are fans of simulation or strategy games that require a deeper level of engagement and dedication. These are the kinds of games I'm recommending to you this week, especially because one of them launches right into Microsoft's video game subscription service today.
Frostpunk 2

Later today, Frostpunk 2 will get its wide release on PC and be available to Game Pass subscribers. It is a more ambitious sequel to an enthralling yet stressful city-builder in which players try to survive in a harsh, snowy apocalypse. Frostpunk 2 increases the scale of things as players try to maintain the restored civilization they built from scratch in the first game. It exacerbates the already stressful nature of real-time city-builders but in a way that works perfectly in its postapocalyptic world. Frostpunk 2 is only available on PC, and you can play it there with a PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to play this weekend (September 13-15)
Key art for Age of Mythology: Retold.

If you're a fan of strategy or simulation video games, this will be a great Xbox Game Pass month for you. Its biggest day-one releases -- Age of Mythology: Retold, Ara: History Untold, and Frostpunk 2 -- are all strategy games, while games like Expeditions: A MudRunner Game and Riders Republic are keeping things interesting on the simulation front. If you're looking for something to play this weekend, I'm highlighting a trio of games that provide entertaining sandboxes to play around in.
Age of Mythology: Retold

Following remakes of the three Age of Empires games and the launch of Age of Empires IV, World's Edge gave the series' fantasy spinoff some love. Age of Mythology: Retold is a real-time strategy game similar to the Age of Empires titles in many ways, as players are building up towns and fighting rival civilizations. The biggest twist Age of Mythology provides is the Major and Minor Gods players choose before playing, which give them additional abilities. This remake also gives the experience a graphical overhaul, lets players reuse god powers, and has well-implemented controller support. Whether you're a fan of the original or never played it before, this is worth checking out. Age of Mythology: Retold is available on PC and Xbox Series X/S via Game Pass Ultimate.

3 games leaving Xbox Game Pass to play this weekend (September 6-8)
Character posing for Payday 3 promo art.

While Age of Mythology: Retold launched on Xbox Game Pass on September 4, several games are also leaving the service. In just over a week, five games will be removed from Xbox Game Pass. This happens around every 15 days, so there's nothing out of the ordinary here. Still, some notable games are leaving the service on September 15, so you should check them out before they are gone. I want to highlight three of those games, ranging from a clever indie to a tense multiplayer game. Check them out this weekend, and if you really enjoy them, you can buy them at a 20% discount while they're still in Xbox Game Pass.
Payday 3

Payday 3 is the latest entry in Starbreeze's long-running first-person shooter series where players work together to pull off heists. For example, you'll work with others to scope out a bank before donning masks, holding people hostage, stealing money, and making a quick escape from the police. It's a tense multiplayer game where failure is likely, and I've had a good time with it. Admittedly, Payday 3 doesn't quite live up to its predecessor, but as something to play free of charge on Xbox Game Pass, it's entertaining enough. The PC and Xbox Series X/S versions of Payday 3 leave Xbox Game Pass on September 15. After that, the game will still be available for purchase on those platforms and PlayStation 5.
