Amazon adds audio personalization to Echo Buds 2

It’s been a while since Amazon launched its Echo Buds 2, but apparently, the company is still looking at ways to improve them. Today, it announced that folks will be able to turn on audio personalization from within the Alexa app on their phones.

According to a company spokesperson, the new feature lets you find the right audio combination for different settings and environments, “whether you’re watching a movie on your laptop or tuning in to your favorite playlist on your phone.”

To take advantage of it, open the Alexa app, select Echo Buds Settings, then select Audio Personalization.

You’ll be presented with a range of frequencies and volumes in each ear, which gives the app the information it needs to perform the calibration. When you’re done, the new settings are uploaded to the Echo Buds 2, ideally resulting in fuller sound.

If you don’t see the Audio Personalization option, you may not have the latest software version on your Echo Buds 2.

To ensure your earbuds get the latest update (578821692 as of January 24, 2023):

  • make sure the buds have a full charge and that the charging case has at least a 30% charge
  • put the earbuds in the case
  • close the case lid
  • keep your Echo Buds next to your phone with the case closed for at least 30 minutes.

The software update should happen automatically. When you connect them to your phone, after the steps above, select Echo Buds Settings then About, and check the Device Software Version.

Amazon isn’t the first company to help people get more from their wireless earbuds in this way. Many brands do something similar, from simple built-in tests like the one included with Jabra’s Elite 7 Pro, to more sophisticated third-party-powered solutions. For instance, 1More favors technology provided by SoundID, which it uses on its ColorBuds 2 earbuds, while Anker Soundcore prefers HearID, the personalization system on the Liberty 4 noise-canceling earbuds. Beyerdynamic and Skullcandy both use Mimi for their versions of sound personalization.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro are like AirPods with AI smarts
Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro and Galaxy Buds 3, in their cases with lids open.

Thanks to what were clearly very accurate leaks, we already knew that Samsung was planning to release a new generation of Galaxy Buds wireless earbuds with a strong resemblance to Apple's iconic AirPods Gen 3 and AirPods Pro. What we didn't know at the time was just how closely Samsung had stuck to Apple's formula.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Apple should be feeling very flattered indeed. The new Galaxy Buds are as close as it gets to Apple's designs, right down to the price: $180 for the Galaxy Buds 3 and $250 for the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro (one dollar more expensive than Apple's pricing). The two models are available for preorder today and will be in stores starting July 24.

Denon Home Amp adds HDMI eARC, Dolby Audio to HEOS systems
Denon Home Amp seen next to a Denon turntable.

In its competition with Sonos and Bose, Denon has a new arrow in its wireless, multiroom quiver: the Denon Home Amp. It's effectively the next-gen version of the aging HEOS Amp HS2, with two important new features that keep it relevant in a modern home: an HDMI eARC input and compatibility with multichannel Dolby Audio. Plus, there's more power on tap for connected speakers with up to 125 watts per channel. You can buy the Denon Home Amp from retailers or for $799.

Denon has been slowly migrating its HEOS line of wireless multiroom speakers and components over to its new Denon Home brand, and the Home Amp is the latest device to be transitioned. It takes the guts of the $499 HEOS Amp HS2 (which Denon continues to sell) and wraps it in a new, simple-yet-sophisticated body that will blend more seamlessly with people's existing hi-fi setups. The clean lines and squarish dimensions are very reminiscent of the Sonos Amp ($699) and Bose Music Amplifier ($699), with touch controls on the front panel for preset access, play/pause, track skipping, and volume control.

Samsung’s next Galaxy Buds are basically AirPods clones
Leaked images purportedly of the Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 and Galazxy Buds 3 Pro.

Well this is vaguely embarrassing. If a recently leaked render -- purportedly of the as-yet-unreleased Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 and Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro -- is accurate, the company's next wireless earbuds basically look like Apple's AirPods Gen 3 and AirPods Pro with USB-C, except with trapezoidal stems instead of Apple's iconic tubular ones. The image above comes to us courtesy of Evan Blass, via his Substack.

If it proves to be what we see when Samsung hosts its Unpacked event on July 10, it's a bizarre and unexpected change of direction for a company that has steadfastly stuck to stemless designs for all of it wireless earbuds so far. Unexpected, but possibly part of a larger move toward a more Apple-esque design language if Blass' additional leak of the next Samsung smart watch is also accurate.
