FuboTV says ‘cybercriminal attack’ behind World Cup outage

FuboTV today said that a “cybercriminal attack” was behind a widespread outage that occurred during the December 14 World Cup semifinal between France and Morocco.

“The incident was not related to any bandwidth constraints on Fubo’s part,” the company said in a press release on December 15. “FuboTV takes this matter very seriously. Once we detected the attack, we immediately took steps to contain the incident and worked to restore service to all of our users as quickly as possible. Service was fully restored by [Wednesday] evening.”

Fubo didn’t describe whether the attack was denial-of-service operation, or some other scheme. It did not say whether any customer data was accessed, and that “our investigation is at an early stage, but we are committed to transparency regarding this incident.”

Fubo said it reported the attack to law enforcement and “engaged Mandiant, an industry-leading incident response firm, to assist with our continuing investigation and response. Our primary focus currently is on ensuring that the incident is fully contained and that there is no threat of further disruption for any of our customers.”

FuboTV is the fourth-largest live streaming service in the U.S. with more than 1.2 million subscribers as of the third quarter of 2022. It places an emphasis on live sports and has a number of optional add-ons that get subscribers international sports not otherwise available in the U.S. It also was, for a time, the only streaming service to offer any live sports in 4K resolution. The current entry-level FuboTV plan costs $70 a month for 139 channels, 1,000 hours of recording, and the ability to watch on up to 10 devices at home at the same time. Its most expensive plan is $100 for 239 channels.

The service also operates in Canada, France, and Spain, with another 358,000 subscribers in those markets.

MLB.TV will be available on Fubo this season

Fubo (née FuboTV) today announced that it's adding MLB.TV to the service in time for Opening Day on March 30. It'll cost you, though, with the optional add-on running $25 a month — the same as if you subscribed directly. But with it, you'll get every out-of-market Major League Baseball game, and the ability to replay games on demand.

Of course, you'll also need a subscription to Fubo itself, which starts at $75 a month for more than 100 channels.

FuboTV is now just … Fubo

FuboTV — the fourth-largest live TV streaming service in the U.S. — today announced that it's doing what a good many folks have been doing for some time now. It's dropping the "TV" from its name and shifting its consumer-facing products to "Fubo." And because you can't change your name without telling anyone, it's enlisted the help of NBA Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett and former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez in an ad campaign to let everyone know.

The new branding will roll out across the company's apps and other products in the coming months.

YouTube TV did 4K sports right — so maybe it’s time to cancel it
World Cup in 4K on YouTube TV.

Let us stipulate a few things: When it comes to video, higher resolution is better. Sure, there are diminishing returns — I wouldn't go out and buy an 8K television just yet. But going from 720p to 1080p is a huge leap in quality. Maybe a little less so when you go from 1080p to 4K, but that's also very much going to depend on your circumstances — television size, what room you're in, etc.

And one more stipulation: 4K for World Cup 2022 was pretty much a necessity. If you've ever watched live sports in 4K, you probably already knew that. FuboTV has had some live sports for years now, and YouTube TV — which is the most popular live service in the U.S., and more than five times larger than FuboTV with more than 5 million subscribers at last count — has had it as an option since the summer of 2021. You also could watch in 4K via the Fox Sports app, provided that you already had a subscription to a cable, satellite, or streaming service.
