Hisense’s massive new 100-inch QLED TV is shockingly affordable

Hisense

When Hisense announced its new 100-inch, 4K QLED U76N at CES 2024, we knew that when it finally arrived in stores, it would challenge our notions of what a 100-inch TV should cost. That day arrived on January 24, and even we weren’t prepared for the U76N’s price — the massive screen launched with a massive 40% discount, bringing the price of the U76N from a regular $5,000 down to $3,000. But then on January 26, another shocker: Best Buy dropped the price by another $1,000. Yes, this 100-inch 4K QLED TV is now $2,000.

Even at $3,000, there was effectively no competition for this size of TV. The closest we could find was TCL’s 98-inch S-Series, which is currently on sale for $2,000. And while an additional $1,000 in savings is nothing to be sneezed at, it’s worth noting that not only is the S-Series a wee bit smaller, but it’s also not a QLED TV — the S-Series uses a conventional LED backlight without the color and brightness enhancements offered through the use of quantum dots. But now that the U76N is the same price, it’s an absolute no-brainer.

Needless to say, Hisense is promoting the big TV for the big gamethis year’s Super Bowl is around the corner — and hoping to steal some of TCL’s thunder (TCL is currently the official TV partner of the NFL). The U76N should be ideal for watching football and just about any other kind of content you can throw at it.

In addition to its massive size, the U76N has a 144Hz native refresh rate, FreeSync Premium Pro, Filmmaker Mode, IMAX Enhanced, Dolby Vision IQ, and Dolby Atmos.

On the connectivity side, the U76N has four HDMI 2.1 ports (two of which can support 4K at 144Hz), Wi-Fi 6e, Apple AirPlay, Google Chromecast built-in, and it’s compatible with WiSA’s SoundSend technology if you want to connect the TV wirelessly to WiSA-compatible speakers.

The whole system is controlled by Google TV, and there’s an onboard ATSC 3.0 (NextGen TV) tuner, which will future-proof your over-the-air TV needs for years to come.

Hisense debuts its first 8K Roku TV, the 75-inch U800GR
Hisense U800GR 8k Roku TV.

We're still several weeks away from CES 2022, but don't tell Hisense that. The company has decided it doesn't need a big, splashy Las Vegas show to show off its big, splashy new Roku TV, which also happens to be its first Roku TV to offer 8K resolution: The Hisense U800GR, which is available December 8 from Best Buy and Amazon for $2,700.

The U800GR packs Hisense's ULED display technology, which in this case means a quantum dot LED panel with a native 120Hz refresh rate and up to 1,000 nits of brightness. Gamers will appreciate the extra smoothness this brings to their fast-action games, as well as the TV's support of auto low-latency mode (ALLM) and variable refresh rate (VRR). You get Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support, in addition to HDR10 and HLG. Hisense says there are 180 local dimming zones for better contrast and black levels.

Netflix password sharing: how the rules work and what you need to know
The Netflix TV show category on iOS.

Back in the day, it was enough for one person in your family or group of friends to have a single Netflix account that got shared around. However, all of that changed in May 2023 when Netflix cracked down on password sharing, making it much more difficult to share an account outside of your home.

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services out there, and with good reason. It delivers a massive library full of old favorites and new movies and shows like Stranger Things, Bridgerton, and Will & Harper. The sudden shift away from Netflix password sharing meant everyone from old roommates to college students were left trying to figure out what the new rules meant, and whether they'd need to pick up their own Netflix account.

Meze Audio debuts its lightest and most affordable open-back headphones
Meze Audio 105 AER open-back headphones.

Romanian company Meze Audio has developed a cultlike following among audiophiles for its selection of uncompromising (and expensive) open-back and closed-back wired headphones. With prices that soar as high as $4,000, Meze's products haven't always been very accessible. However, its latest open-back model -- the 105 AER -- may bring many more folks under the Meze tent. At $399, the 105 AER are the company's most affordable open-back headphones to-date, as well as its lightest. They'll be available from mezeaudio.com in early December.

The 105 AER's design is a clear evolution from the more expensive 109 Pro ($799), with Meze's signature self-adjusting headband and generously padded over-ear cushions. Where these new cans carve their own path is by using a different mix of materials and shapes. The 105 AER use cast zinc alloy, stamped manganese spring steel, and polyurethane (PU) leather in the headband design, but avoid the 109 Pro's use of wood, which may help to explain the weight difference: 11.8 ounces for the 105 AER versus 13 ounces for the 109 Pro.
