New firmware lets Jabra Elite 85t talk to Amazon Alexa

The Jabra Elite 85t are a fantastic set of true wireless earbuds — in fact, they top our list of the best true wireless earbuds you can buy — but now, thanks to a firmware update, they’re just a little bit better. That’s because you can now choose between the built-in voice assistant on your phone (likely Siri or Google Assistant) and Amazon’s Alexa.

The update makes the Elite 85t one of the few models of wireless headphones or true wireless earbuds that lets people talk directly to Alexa, the voice assistant that Amazon includes in its line of Echo smart speakers and Fire TV streaming media devices.

Mobile access to Alexa has always been something of a weak spot for Amazon. You can install the Alexa app on both iOS and Android devices, but neither of these operating systems will let you switch the default voice assistant to Alexa.

This means that unless your earbuds or headphones are specifically equipped to do so (like the Jabra Elite 85t or Amazon’s Echo Buds), triggering the voice assistant pretty much always means Siri or Google Assistant.

And that’s kind of a drag if you’re all cozy with Alexa while at home. Asking Alexa to add items to your shopping list when standing in the kitchen is great, but if you have no easy way of amending that list once you set out for the store, it’s less than ideal.

There’s also a lot to be said for being able to trigger Alexa’s many smart home routines when you’re not actually at home.

With this firmware update, the Jabra Elite 85t become the latest earbuds or headphones to offer built-in access to Alexa. Here are some of the other models that already have this feature:

  • Sony WH-1000XM4
  • Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700
  • Jabra Elite 85H
  • Amazon Echo Buds
  • Bose QuietComfort Earbuds
  • Sony WF-1000XM3
  • Sony WF-SP800N
  • Bose QuietComfort 35 II

Give your head a shake: Klipsch’s new earbuds use head gestures as controls
A close-up of the Klipsch T5 II ANC true wireless earbuds and charging case.

Today, Klipsch launched its latest true wireless earbuds, the $299 Klipsch T5 II ANC. As the name suggests, these are Klipsch's first true wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation (ANC). But what makes these earbuds unique is their ability to sense head movements and use them to control phone functions like accepting or rejecting calls.

These gestures are enabled through Klipsch's partnership with Bragi, a company you may have heard about before. Bragi was an early innovator in the true wireless space and launched the $299 Bragi Dash in 2016. Those earbuds were loaded with sensors and onboard memory that enabled a host of features like fitness tracking. At the time, we felt Bragi had focussed too much on features and not enough on simplicity. In 2021, Bragi is using the lessons it learned with the Dash and Dash Pro to develop its Bragi OS -- a customizable, gesture-sensing software that Klipsch has incorporated into the T5 II ANC and the Klipsch Connect app.

How to get Jabra’s free ANC upgrade for Elite 75t and Elite Active 75t
Jabra ANC Update for Elite 75t and Elite Active 75t

As promised, today Jabra has released a free firmware update for its Elite 75t and Elite Active 75t true wireless earbuds that give these models active noise cancellation (ANC). It's the first time ANC has been added to a set of true wireless earbuds post-launch.

Once the update has been installed, the Jabra Sound+ app walks you through a quick personalization sequence, so that you can fine-tune the ANC performance to your tastes. Afterward, ANC mode can be triggered at any time by using the button on the left earbud to cycle through ANC on, HearThrough (ambient sound), and off. If you prefer to toggle between two of the modes, you can select which two you want inside the app.

The $230 Elite 85t are Jabra’s first ANC earbuds
Jabra Elite 85t

After a surprisingly long delay, Jabra has now joined the ranks of audio companies that make a set of true wireless earbuds featuring active noise cancellation (ANC) with the debut of its $230 Elite 85t.

The new top-of-the-line earbuds are $30 more expensive than its previous flagship, the $200 Elite Active 75t, and will be available starting in November in titanium/black. Gold/beige, copper/black, black, and gray options will follow in January 2021.
