You can now watch Peacock on all Fire TV devices, ahead of Tokyo Games

When NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service launched in 2020, it lacked the support of two critical streaming platforms: Roku and Amazon’s Fire TV. Roku and NBCUniversal eventually came to an agreement, but Amazon remained in limbo — until now. Starting June 24, the Peacock app can be added to all Amazon Fire TV devices, including its Fire tablets and Fire TV-powered TVs from Toshiba and Insignia, which is auspicious timing given Peacock’s extensive plans for covering the Tokyo Olympic Games.

“We aim to make Peacock as widely available as possible,” said Maggie McLean Suniewick, president of business development and partnerships, direct-to-consumer, at NBCUniversal, in a press release, “so we’re excited to bring the service to millions more people who stream on Fire TV and Fire tablets. Amazon customers will find amazing content to stream this summer on Peacock, from the Tokyo Olympics to The Boss Baby: Family Business.”

The agreement between the two companies goes beyond just the Peacock service itself.  NBCUniversal’s 15 network apps will also be available on Amazon’s devices. This includes NBC, Bravo, NBC News, NBC Sports, and Telemundo, among others.

Once you install Peacock on your Fire TV device, you’ll be able to use Alexa to open the app by saying, “Alexa, open Peacock,” but Amazon is also promising deeper Alexa title integration later this year. When that happens, you’ll be able to ask for specific shows or movies, too.

You can start with a Peacock subscription for as little as $5 per month, but this is the ad-supported tier. For $10 per month, there’s also an ad-free version called Peacock Premium. Either plan gives you access to the full Peacock library ,which has a big selection of very popular shows like The Office, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, Cheers, 30 Rock, Yellowstone, Friday Night Lights, and Downton Abbey. It’s also home to Hollywood movies like the Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, and Ghostbusters franchises.

Amazon Fire TV Channels brings even more free TV to the platform
Amazon Fire TV Channels.

Amazon today announced Fire TV Channels, which brings even more free ad-supported TV — otherwise known as FAST — to the Amazon Fire TV operating system.

The gist is simple: You'll see even more free video promoted to you on the Amazon Fire TV home screen from the various sources within the FAST universe. That means in addition to all the content currently available on Amazon Freevee (formerly known as IMDB TV), there will be video from the NHL, Xbox, and TMZ. There will be a new travel category, too, and Conde Nast and the PGA are teed up next.

Amazon celebrates 200 million Fire TV devices by launching more
Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED Series TV.

Amazon today announced that it's bolstering the high end of its Fire TV Omni Series line of televisions with new sizes and entry into new international markets, while also bringing new sets to the more affordable side of the equation. And the news comes as the company also announced that it's sold more than 200 million Fire TV devices worldwide. For context, that number was around 150 million in January 2022.

First up: The — heretofore available in 65- and 75-inch sizes — gains options at 43, 50 and 55 inches. They're up for preorder at Amazon starting today (at $449, $529, and $599, respectively), and will be available at Best Buy on May 11. These are fundamentally the same as what we reviewed previously, Amazon says, only with fewer local dimming zones because of the smaller size.

YouTube TV increases its monthly prices by $8 – is now the time to switch?
YouTube TV on Roku.

YouTube TV has raised the price of its monthly subscription by $8, from $65 to $73. The move comes on the heels of its announcement that it will be adding a multiview feature for sports channels. The change in price will hit current subscribers on April 18, however, the streaming service, which is owned by Google, has already started charging new customers the higher price.

It's been a while since YouTube TV last raised its prices. That was in 2020, when the streaming service increased subscriptions from $50 to $65. When the service first launched in 2017, it only cost $35 per month.
