Verizon teams up with Bang & Olufsen for a pair of Android TV soundbars

Verizon today announced a pair of soundbars with Android TV built in. The Verizon Stream TV Soundbar and Soundbar Pro are made by luxury brand Bang & Olufsen. Both feature support for 4K resolution at up to 60 frames per second, Wi-Fi 6 (that’s 802.11ax), HDMI 2.1, and Bluetooth 5.0.

The Verizon Stream TV Soundbar sports five speakers — three full-range, and two woofers — has three HDMI ports (two in and one out) and retails for $400. The Soundbar Pro weighs in at $1,000 and has nine speakers — four full-range, three tweeters, and two woofers — as well as three HDMI inputs and one output.

This sort of product isn’t new — it’s exactly what you’ve seen from other retailers like the JBL Link Bar, and or the Anker Nebula, or the Roku Smart Soundbar. So the obvious question is “Why Verizon?” There’s no great answer here, other than it’s the sort of thing that businesses do when they want to do partnerships. It’s also the sort of thing you’d do if you’re a company that wants to get more insight on what people are doing and watching with their TVs and don’t own the operating system itself, as Google or Roku or Amazon do.

Introducing the Verizon Stream TV Soundbar and Soundbar Pro for your home theater

“Verizon is a leading provider of the best, most sought after communications, information and entertainment services for customers,” Chris Emmons, vice president, Devices and Accessories, Verizon, said in the press release. “We are thrilled to be working with Bang & Olufsen, a brand known for its world-class audio and TV solutions, to provide our customers with more premium home entertainment experiences.”

The Stream TV Soundbar and Soundbar Pro are available now from Verizon, with discounts available of up to 30% or 40% if you buy multiple accessories.

Bang & Olufsen’s latest soundbar costs a fortune, but it might be the last one you ever own
Bang & Olufsen Beosound Theatre seen integrated with a TV.

Danish audio icon, Bang & Olufsen (B&O), isn't a company known for its half-measures either in the design of its products, or the prices it asks for them. That couldn't be more true than on the company's latest speaker, the Beosound Theatre, an incredibly ambitious 7.1.4-channel, 12-driver Dolby Atmos soundbar that starts at $6,890 and climbs rapidly from there. B&O says it took its design inspiration for the Theater from sailboats, saying that the Beosound Theatre’s keel-like design makes it "appear as if it is resting on an aluminum blade, floating in the air as one fluid form."

Like the company's first Dolby Atmos soundbar, the Beosound Stage, the Theater will be available in a variety of colors and finishes, including an optional oak-trimmed version that will sell for $7,990. Unlike the Stage, however, the Theater has been designed to grow and morph with your needs over time.

TiVo pairs up with Europe’s Vestel for its first smart TV
TiVo Smart TV.

There's a new player in the smart TV space, and it's from an familiar name. TiVo — yes, that TiVo — has teamed up with European manufacturer Vestel for its first TiVo OS-powered smart TV. They'll first be available on the continent in 2023.

Generally speaking, we should expect the same sort of experience we've seen from TiVo Stream 4K, the Android-based dongle the company put out in 2020. That was a decent little device, with a custom user interface trying to make some sense out of the vast streaming space. And the smart TV space certainly hasn't slowed down, either, with TiVo and Vestel joining the likes of Roku, Amazon Fire TV, LG, and Samsung, which all have their own custom operating systems powering televisions.

YouTube TV adds 5.1 surround sound on Roku, Android TV, Google TV
YouTube TV on Roku.

YouTube TV today announced that it's finally rolled out support for 5.1 surround sound across three major streaming platforms, with a few more still officially waiting for the feature. Roku — the biggest of the streaming systems in the U.S. and No. 2 worldwide — Google TV, and Android TV all now should bear witness to enhanced audio. Provided, that is, that you've got a 5.1 setup in the first place, and that the program you're watching is spitting out its audio in 5.1.

Those devices join the likes of smart TVs from LG, Samsung, and Vizio, as well as older-model Chromecasts, which already had support for 5.1 audio. Still waiting are Amazon Fire TV (the biggest platform in the world and No. 2 in the U.S.), Apple TV, and game consoles.
