New Comcast feature limits the amount of time kids spend on the internet

Screen time is a pretty serious thing to manage for adults who are addicted to social networks, constant communication, and Candy Crush — so imagine how it is being a kid in the internet age. When I was young, you were just happy if all the volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica were at the library. Now imagine being a smart young person who has literally never lived in an age without smartphones and has access to nearly all the information the world has to offer.

It’s a worrying issue for a lot of parents but Comcast is trying to help with a new parental control feature that can set a time limit on how long kids (or anyone else, for that matter) can be online.

Xfiniity xFi was designed to provide simple tools to help our customers see and control all the things connected to their home Wi-Fi network,” said David Puckett, vice president of xFi and Digital Security Product Management. “As a dad with four kids, I know how hard it can be to keep tabs on how long everyone has been online every day, especially during the summer. This latest feature is a great way for parents to better manage their children’s screen time.”

Comcast’s kid control feature is pretty easy to use:

  • Go to the main xFi page and select the kid’s account or profile.
  • Scroll down and tap Edit next to Active Time Limits.
  • “Check either Weekdays or Weekends to activate the days you want your children to access the home Wi-Fi network. Here, you can toggle the daily time limit. When the time is up, the kid is cut off.
  • You can also unpause the setting or set a new time limit.

According to a study by Common Sense Media, the majority of modern parents (close to 70 percent), feel that their teens use their mobile devices too much.

If you’re a Comcast customer, this new feature is a good way to personalize, troubleshoot, monitor, and control your Wi-Fi network and keep an eye on your kids’ access to all the weird stuff available at the click of a mouse.

Use Comcast for internet? Your personal data may have been hacked
A building with the Xfinity logo on it.

Comcast, alongside several other big corporations, has recently suffered a devastating data breach. According to reports, it's possible that hackers got their hands on the data of up to 36 million Comcast Xfinity customers, meaning the company's cable television and internet department. Although the company is pretty tight-lipped about it, the data breach occurred over two months ago. Here's what we know and what you should do to protect yourself.

The hackers were able to access those masses of customer information through a vulnerability known as "CitrixBleed." It's found in Citrix networking devices that Comcast and other huge corporations use. The exploit was initially discovered in August and appears to have been used in cyberattacks on not just Comcast but also many other companies, including Boeing.

Ikea’s new Dajlien home fitness collection features portable air purifier, much more
The Ikea Dajlien Air Purifier sitting by a chair.

Ikea already has a variety of air purifiers in its lineup, but it'll have one more joining the family next year. The upcoming Dajlien collection launches in January 2024 and features 19 items designed to improve your home fitness routines. This includes everything from yoga mats and training weights to air purifiers and portable Bluetooth speakers.

The Dajlien Air Purifier looks much like Ikea's existing Uppatvind Air Purifier, which features three fan speeds, a small footprint, and an affordable $35 price tag. But while the Uppatvind sports a simple white color scheme, the Dajlien version offers a bright yellow handle and eye-catching green frame. It doesn't seem to be quite as robust as the Starkvind Air Purifier (which syncs with the Ikea smartphone app), but it looks like a great alternative for shoppers on a budget.

Google Home adds new camera features and support for Nest Cam Outdoor
The interface on Google Home allowing you to capture custom clips.

Google Home is one of the best smart home platforms, and it's just gotten more exciting with the rollout of new camera features and support for the Nest Cam Outdoor. These updates are currently limited to Public Preview users, though we expect to see them launched to all users soon.

One of the biggest additions is support for the first-generation Nest Cam Outdoor. Google will be rolling out eligibility to users over the next few weeks -- so if you're a Public Preview user and don't have access right away, you may have to wait a bit longer. Once the feature has been pushed to your camera, you can use it like you would any other device in Google Home. This includes having access to an updated camera history interface.
