Instagram back up after second major outage of the week

Facebook started off the week with one heck of a blunder, watching all of its services go down worldwide for over six hours. Now, to close out the week, Facebook-owned Instagram had another large-scale outage that lasted multiple hours. People started to notice issues with Instagram not loading or refreshing around 2 p.m. ET, and the problems seemed to be sporadic — but a wave of reports made it clear there was a mojor problem.

Over on Twitter, both #instagramdownagain and #instadown were trending for the duration. That doesn’t happen for a small or short blip.

Though there were some reports of Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp being down, triggering comments from those who dealt with Monday’s issues, that ended up being more of a coincidence than anything noteworthy. Facebook confirmed the outage and referred to a “configuration change” as the culprit — though this was apparently a different configuration problem than what knocked everything out just a few days ago.

And that much was clear as we assessed the situation today. Unlike Monday’s whole-network outage, this problem with Instagram isn’t a complete blackout; some people were hit, and others had a relatively short delay in getting up-to-date content in their apps.

After the week Facebook just had, things can only get better, right?

Instagram just killed the IGTV app — now it’s up to TikTok
Instagram being used on an iPhone.

Four years after it was first introduced, it looks like it's the end of the road for Instagram's stand-alone IGTV app. On Monday, Instagram's official blog outlined a slew of measures to "simplify" the video experience on the platform, with one of these measures being the decision to stop updating the IGTV app henceforth.

The decision to kill off IGTV did not come as a surprise to most Instagram users, given that it has been surpassed in popularity by Instagram Reels. In fact, the writing was on the wall for IGTV last year, when Instagram stopped using the IGTV branding on its app. This was just after the company decided to merge all video content under 'Instagram Videos.'
Why did Instagram pull the plug on IGTV?
A lot has changed in the four years since Instagram first introduced IGTV in 2018. It was initially conceptualized as a platform to counter the dominance of YouTube in the long-form video space, with the app concentrating solely on long-form vertical videos. Before IGTV, Instagram only allowed the uploading of short video clips to the platform with a maximum duration of one minute. IGTV extended that limit to an hour. Simply put, Instagram wanted IGTV to become the YouTube of vertical videos.

With Instagram’s newest sticker, you no longer need to say “link in bio”
Instagram login screen.

Today, Instagram is eliminating the need for the "link in bio" refrain as it rolls out Stories links, allowing its users to link their followers to non-Instagram content directly. The move comes after a limited test earlier in the year that restricted the new feature to a select group of users.

When it first launched, Instagram didn't allow anyone to share links, either due to a desire to keep the platform clean and focused on imagery or as a tool to drive engagement. Either way, the lack of linking support in posts and Stories led to the common "link in bio" phrase by users who wanted to point their followers to their own work. With today's change, anyone can now share a link in a story post with the same ease as adding a GIF or poll to your Story.
