You’ll have to imagine how fun the new OnePlus Nord 2 x Pac-Man phone looks

OnePlus is up to its old promotional tricks again. It has announced a collaboration between it and the ever-popular Pac-Man video game franchise, resulting in the OnePlus Nord 2 x Pac-Man Edition smartphone. OnePlus’ marketing department is building anticipation in a frustrating way by telling us how we can win one of the new phones and promising early access codes to the online store if we’re unsuccessful, but not actually showing us the phone at all yet.

It has shared some details about the phone though, giving us a hint of what to expect. It describes the special edition OnePlus Nord 2 as having a dual-layer design rear panel, with glow-in-the-dark ink on the lowest layer showing the classic Pac-Man maze. Sounds fun, but as we’ve said, you’ll just have to imagine it for now.

While a special design is to be expected, the software on the OnePlus Nord 2 x Pac-Man has been given a more unusual twist. OnePlus says it has enhanced the experience with challenges, mini-games, and hidden content that has to be unlocked to enjoy. Exactly how this will look or operate isn’t known yet. OnePlus is treading a fine line here, as most of us want an easy-to-use phone that does what we want quickly. We hope any gamification doesn’t slow things down.

OnePlus has not announced the release date for the Nord 2 x Pac-Man yet, but has said it will only be available in Europe and India, with no U.S. release date mentioned at all. This isn’t the first time it has restricted sales of its special edition devices, with previous Star Wars models only being sold in certain regions. The Nord 2 x Pac-Man will only be available with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage space, and cost 499 British pounds, which is around $672, or 529 euros.

You can try and win one of the OnePlus Nord 2 x Pac-Man phones by posting a high score on OnePlus’s special online Pac-Man game, which runs from November 8 to November 10. From November 12 to November 15, players will win the chance to buy the new phone and receive a pair of OnePlus Buds Z if they are successful. You’ll just have to imagine the rest for now.

OnePlus’ latest Android tablet not only has the top Qualcomm processor inside and a massive screen, but you can also buy a keyboard case and a stylus for it — making it far more versatile than Google’s tablet.

Let's get into some details. The OnePlus Pad 2 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and 12GB of RAM inside its 6.49mm-thick all-metal unibody, which weighs 584 grams. On the sides of the tablet are six speakers for high-resolution audio, and on the back is a circular camera module with a 13-megapixel camera at the top center of the otherwise flat rear panel.

OnePlus, which has previously toyed with unusual yet fascinating concepts, is now reviving the use of metal in phone design. The OnePlus Nord 4 is launching on July 16, and the company has already begun teasing its next release.

We already gave you a preview of the upcoming OnePlus Nord 4 with a metal back, while reserving our final review until the announcement next week. But ahead of the launch, I spoke with OnePlus President and COO Kinder Liu about the exciting aspects of the new design and the company's commitment to what it claims is the "best-ever fluency" on its devices yet.

Is the OnePlus Nord 4 the best-looking Nord phone yet? It’s certainly the boldest and the first to do something really intriguing with the materials, too. The Nord 4 has an all-metal unibody, a way of manufacturing smartphones that has fallen by the wayside over the years after phones made using a blend of metal and glass became more popular.

What does having a metal unibody mean? It refers to a single piece of metal being machined so it's the entire chassis of the phone rather than sandwiched between the screen and another material like glass on the back. The first thing you notice is that the phone feels great in your hand. Because the curve of the chassis is uninterrupted by a switch between materials, it’s completely smooth and avoids any sharpness or uncomfortable ridges. Even the tiny antenna bands — the plastic inserts that assist with cellular and Wi-Fi reception — are flush with the surface, and you won’t notice them just through touch.
