The Galaxy S25 will fix a big mistake Samsung made with the Galaxy S24

We’re still a little bit away from when Samsung is expected to launch the Samsung Galaxy S25 in January. At the moment, we’re anticipating Samsung’s latest foldables — the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 — to arrive on July 10 during a Samsung event in Paris. However, a new leak from Ming-Chi Kuo has tipped some details about the Galaxy S25 specs.

As expected, the Samsung Galaxy S25 will pack the latest and greatest hardware with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. According to Kuo, Qualcomm will be the sole supplier of the S25, unlike the previous year, when it only supplied 40% of the chips for the S24. That means there will not be different Qualcomm and Exynos models scattered across the global market, which should reduce the performance difference experienced by users. The Exynos 2500 may simply not be ready to ship due to a lower-than-expected 3nm yield.

Qualcomm will likely be the sole SoC supplier for the Samsung Galaxy S25 (vs. 40% for the S24), as the Exynos 2500 may not ship due to Samsung's lower-than-expected 3nm yield.

In addition to the significant increase in supply share, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will see a price…

— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) June 17, 2024

That’s not great news for Samsung’s in-house chips, but it is great news for Qualcomm, which will benefit from the increased market share and Samsung users who value the reliably powerful performance offered by Snapdragon chips compared with what you typically get on Exynos. It’s also good news for TSMC, which is the exclusive supplier of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.

While we don’t have a frame of reference to compare the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 with the yet-to-be-released Exynos 2500, we do know that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 outperformed both the Exynos and Tensor chipsets of its generation in benchmark tests.

There is a big downside here, though. This leak from Kuo essentially confirms that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be 25-30% more expensive than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which could translate to a hundred dollars or more of a price increase when the Galaxy S25 finally comes out.

However, we’re still many months away from when the Galaxy S25 is expected to launch, so there’s no need to panic just yet. There’s always a chance that Samsung may choose to eat some or all of the cost of the new chips rather than hike prices. After all, with phones like the S24 Ultra that is already upward of $1,000, there’s only so much you can increase the price without dramatically reducing your potential market.

The Galaxy S25 could add a new feature that’s perfect for mobile gaming

The Samsung Galaxy S25 is set to blow fans away with its impressive specs, and the latest leak just lends more credence to those rumors. According to trusted leaker Jukanlosreve, Samsung is working on a "game mode" that will improve performance without generating a tremendous amount of excess heat.

Jukanlosreve speculates the game mode feature will utilize the Qualcomm Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 (AFME 2.0), which is a technology that can double the frame rate in games without increasing its power usage. That means a smoother gaming experience without extra heat or a noticeable impact on battery life. Qualcomm writes that AFME 2.0 "provides realistic detail by generating high-quality scenes, doubling the frame rate while maintaining the same power consumption."

The Samsung Galaxy S25’s colors leaked again, and this time they’re different
A person holding the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 has been the focus of a lot of coverage for months now as we eagerly await its launch. In that time, we've covered a lot of different leaks, but this latest news shows the risk of using uncertain information: It isn't guaranteed. Trusted leaker Evan Blass recently said the Galaxy S25 and S25 Plus phones will be available in blue, Mint, navy, and Silver Shadow, per a story from Android Headlines.

That's different from the original tip when Ross Young said the colors would be red, gold, and black. The new colors are also different from the colors Young suggested in late October. Although we're hesitant to say which is more likely, we've seen blue and Silver Shadow mentioned in multiple leaks from different people. That corroboration lends some confidence to those two options.

The Galaxy S25 may get the spec update it deserves
Samsung Galaxy S24 in Marble Gray held in hand.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 looks set to come with an important upgrade over the Galaxy S24: more RAM. It may sound like a simple specification bump, but if a benchmark test is correct, an increase to 12GB for the base model is entirely possible. When the Galaxy S24 launched earlier this year, it came with 8GB of RAM on its entry-level model, which many didn't consider to be a flagship specification that was in line with the phone's status and price. The Galaxy S25 is apparently raising it from 8GB to 12GB, according to a report from GSMArena.

The additional RAM means your apps will run more smoothly, with fewer hiccups and less stuttering, but we shouldn't get too excited yet. We're not sure if Samsung is completely doing away with the 8GB option, and some of the more costly Galaxy S24 phones did come with 12GB of RAM. The benchmark hinting at a RAM upgrade could also be false as they can be faked, so take it with skepticism.
