Uber scores exclusive Super Bowl 50 deal for rides to and from the game

If you’re heading to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara next month for Super Bowl 50, Uber’s an option.

That’s different to previous Super Bowls, as cities hosting the year’s biggest sporting event have always imposed traffic restrictions preventing Uber – and others offering a similar service – from driving up close to the stadiums to drop off and pick up passengers.

This year, however, Uber has scored a deal with the Super Bowl Host Committee offering services worth up to a whopping $500,000, according to Quartz. The committee essentially works to ensure the day runs smoothly, overseeing a range of matters that includes transportation, which explains why Uber cars will be tootling to and from the stadium before and after the big game next month.

In an effort to keep the traffic flowing, Uber has reportedly been given its own pickup and drop-off areas outside Levi’s Stadium, which happens to be just 40 miles from the company’s headquarters in San Francisco.

Uber’s Laura Zapata told Quartz the deal is “a great way for us to celebrate our home city.”

Local drivers for rival services like Lyft, however, will be left sitting on the sidelines as they won’t have permission to take riders close to the game in Santa Clara. Still, with so many Uber workers focusing on stadium trips, there should be plenty of alternative rides available for others in the ride-hailing game – people have to get to their Super Bowl parties, after all.

Super Bowl 50 takes place on February 7.

The best Super Bowl 2020 commercials

Super Bowl LIV -- that's the 2020 Super Bowl to you and I -- is over, as the Kansas City Chiefs scored a surprising, come-from-behind victory in the fourth quarter to defeat the San Francisco 49ers. But who are we kidding? You weren't watching for the big game, or to count Patrick Mahomes' passing yardage. You came for the commercials.

And this year, technology companies delivered in spades -- in some cases, well before the coin was tossed or the first flag was saluted. These days, companies that wait until Super Bowl Sunday to unveil their Super Bowl commercials are, frankly, late to the game. That's why plenty of commercials and even teasers for full-length spots flooded the web in the weeks leading up to the Big Game.

Roku reaches agreement with Fox to allow Super Bowl streaming
Roku Express 2019

Football fans hoping to watch the Super Bowl via Roku tomorrow will be pleased to hear that the platform has hammered out a last-minute agreement with content supplier Fox.

Earlier this week, Roku announced it would pull all Fox cable channels from its platform beginning today, February 1. That would have meant that Roku users would be unable to watch the Super Bowl via their Roku devices and would need to turn to another service such as Hulu or SlingTV.
