Though it doesn’t have the sheer popularity of shonen hits like Naruto, One Piece, or Bleach, Kazue Kato’s Blue Exorcist has plenty to offer. A-1 Pictures’ anime adaptation introduces Rin and his twin brother Yukio. While the pair are raised by a priest, Rin’s biological father turns out to be Satan.

Despite the controversy, Rin enrolls in True Cross Academy to become a demonic Exorcist and defeat this ultimate evil. Blue Exorcist undoubtedly uses tropes shonen fans are more than familiar with, but its modern supernatural setting and cast of eccentric characters give the series undeniable charm. Amid the fantasy and action, fans can expect some sincere emotional story beats from its heroes.

Though it may not meet the standard of its predecessor, Dragon Ball Super scratches the itch for fans looking for more adventures in this universe. Set within the 10-year-long time skip after Goku and company defeated Majin Buu, the series opens with the Saiyan living a quiet, peaceful life.

However, the quaint farmer’s life is upended when Beerus, the God of Destruction, wakes up and seeks out the Super Saiyan God. Dragon Ball Super can’t quite match the acclaim of Dragon Ball Z, but the sequel series is still easily a more-than-welcome return to Toriyama’s imaginative world. With more bombastic action and larger-than-life storylines, Super is an investing follow-up that expands upon the franchise’s lore.

The land’s water supply is in the vice grip of a selfish king, and his son Beelzebub and his assistant Thief are tasked with finding a long-lost lake. While it won’t surpass Dragon Ball’s legacy, Sand Land is an imaginative and refreshing change of pace from the late creator. Ryuuko is hunting down her father’s killer, who wields the other half of her broken sword. Kill la Kill was one of the most praised anime originals of the 2010s, partly thanks to Trigger’s eye for visual flair. As with other series like One Piece, writer and illustrator Hideaki Sorachi’s Gintama has been acclaimed as one of the best long-form shounen in manga and anime. Animated by studios Sunrise and Bandai Namco, the story begins in an alternate Edo-era Japan where humanity was forced to surrender to an alien invasion and form an uneasy alliance, leading to the samurai creed and swords being banned.

However, Gintoki Sakata refuses to give up the lifestyle, going with his companions on a series of odd jobs that lead to even stranger misadventures. It’s a massive undertaking, but Gintama is a wildly entertaining and rewarding anime series to get invested in. The series’ anachronistic blend of sci-fi with 1800s Japan makes for a creative setting, and its use of action and comedy is consistently witty.

The series is an adaptation of writer and illustrator Masakazu Ishuguro’s manga of the same name and tells parallel stories. In a world where a disaster fractured Japan and left man-eating monsters in its wake, one story follows a group of children in a nursery who gradually learn the horrifying reality that lurks outside their haven’s walls.

Meanwhile, two teenagers named Maru and Kiruko team up to find a supposed place called Heaven for unique reasons, with elements of their pasts gradually coming to light. Animation studio Sunrise’s adaptation did the source material justice, adapting teenage protagonist Kagome Higurashi’s story as she travels back in time to feudal Japan to help the young half-demon boy Inuyasha recover the fragments of the ancient Shikon Jewel before they fall into nefarious hands and threaten the world.

Inuyasha has been beloved as an icon of the shounen anime and manga genres, tastefully capturing a sense of colorful adventure and supernatural intrigue. The period-piece approach with the feudal Japan setting also proves to be a great way to experiment with historical fantasy.

In an alternate steampunk universe, Edward and his brother, Alphonse Elric, pay a heavy price when they try to resurrect their mother with alchemy. Edward loses an arm and a leg, while Al’s spirit is stuck in a suit of armor. Instead of giving up, Edward becomes a Fullmetal Alchemist and teams up with his brother on a quest to restore their bodies before facing a conspiracy that has links to their long-missing father.

In the future, an unlikely group of bounty hunters makes their way among the interstellar colonies. However, the past is often present for Spike, Jet, Faye, Ed, and Ein. Cowboy Bebop only ran for 26 episodes, but the series’ fascinating journey and memorable ending still resonate to this day.

The best feel-good movies on Netflix right now
Stephan James runs as Jesse Owens in Race.

There probably isn't a certified doctor who would prescribe a feel-good movie to lift your spirits, but sometimes it really helps. Feel-good movies are a subgenre that ranges from comedies to dramas. The secret to their success is that the main characters overcome their anxieties, their personal roadblocks, and all other obstacles to achieve their goals. Who doesn't want to follow that example?

Netflix doesn't have a very robust selection of feel-good movies, but it does have some very good ones. As it happens, this month's new additions, Race and The World's Fastest Indian, are both true stories that share some common elements with each other. Neither film was made for Netflix, so they may not stick around for long. But for now, they have a prime place among the best feel-good movies on Netflix.

The best fantasy movies on Netflix right now
Kate Beckinsale and Hugh Jackman in Van Helsing.

Finding great fantasy movies on Netflix is a bit of a fantasy in and of itself. The king of the streamers neglects this category, and it also relies heavily on Universal Pictures' catalog to bail out its shortcomings. That's why it's The Scorpion King and Van Helsing's turn to be on this list while Conan the Barbarian waits for yet another Netflix return.

The Scorpion King and Van Helsing aren't bad movies, but fantasy fans deserve a better selection from Netflix than films that are two decades old. Even this month's third addition, The Covenant, is closing in on 20 years. Netflix has made some original fantasy movies of its own, but not lately. For the most part, the best fantasy movies on Netflix are pretty stagnant. But when something new arrives, we'll be here to add it to the list.
