Blue Beetle trailer introduces a new hero to the DC Universe

Among superheroes, Blue Beetle is pretty far down the list when it comes to name recognition in the real world. Both Shazam! and Black Adam have bigger followings, and that didn’t exactly work out for them at the box office. So why is Blue Beetle getting a big-screen movie and not the HBO Max original film that he was originally supposed to get? Two reasons, really. First, the titular Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes, will now be the first Hispanic superhero to headline his own DC movie. And second, Jaime is played by Xolo Maridueña, a real rising star thanks to his stint on Cobra Kai. Between Xolo and his character, this film might have something.

The trailer goes over Jaime’s superhero origin and makes significant changes to it as well. For one thing, he wasn’t surrounded by his extended family in the comics when he first underwent his transformation into Blue Beetle. As seen here, it’s as if the alien armor is growing from underneath his skin, and it’s somewhat unsettling. But the key takeaway is that Jaime’s family will be much more involved with the plot than they were in the comics.

That brings us to the villain, Susan Sarandon’s Victoria Kord. Her last name is also the family name of the previous Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, so it’s probably not a coincidence that she claims that the alien Scarab is hers. Victoria is also an invention of this film, so there isn’t a comic book counterpart to compare her with. So far, she seems like a fairly generic and one-note corporate adversary. That could actually work if the film’s focus is largely on Jaime and his comedic hijinks. Superhero flicks don’t have to be about high stakes as long as they’re fun.

George Lopez is co-starring in the film as Jaime’s uncle, Rudy, with Adriana Barraza as Nana, Damián Alcázar as Alberto, Elpidia Carrillo as Rocio, Bruna Marquezine as Jenny, and Raoul Max Trujillo as Carapax the Indestructible Man.

Blue Beetle was directed by Angel Manuel Soto from a script by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. It will hit theaters on Friday, August 18.

3 reasons why Blue Beetle is the worst DCEU movie
Xolo Maridueña in Blue Beetle.

If you were hoping that Blue Beetle would be the film that turned around DC's fortunes after severe missteps in Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and The Flash, then you're going to be disappointed. Despite some good intentions behind it, Blue Beetle lands with a thud and it somehow manages to come off badly even when compared to the two DC films that came out earlier this year.

This is truly disappointing because there are things that Blue Beetle got right, including casting Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña in the title role. Maridueña is really great as Jaime Reyes, and he seems destined to headline bigger and better films. Additionally, the Blue Beetle costume itself looks great and it's very true to the spirit of the way the Scarab looks and operates in the comics.

Blue Beetle in Infinite Crisis

Get ready for the Blue Beetle - a teen superhero named Jaime Reyes who is fused with an alien scarab that gives him a radical bio-organic blue suit with advanced weapons systems and a metric ton of power. Blue Beetle may not be as well known as Batman or Wonder Woman, but he's about to have his chance in the limelight with his self-titled theatrical debut. One hopes that Blue Beetle fares better than DC's other recent cinematic flops including Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and The Flash.

Still, fans new and old can celebrate the Blue Beetle outside the movie theater with countless stories, TV series, and even a fighting video game from the makers of Mortal Kombat. That's right, you can blast a hole through your DC opponents as Blue Beetle in Injustice 2. Jaime Reyes is still a fairly recent incarnation of the superhero. However, the Blue Beetle has a long history that includes two previous owners of the mysterious Scarab who also fought for justice. You just have to know where to look for the best stories out there, and DT is here to help you with that endeavor.

Is Blue Beetle streaming?
Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle.

This week, Jaime Reyes joins Miles Morales as one of the few superheroes created in this century to get their own feature film on the big screen. Blue Beetle also has the distinction of being the first Latino DC hero to hold down his own film, a milestone that Marvel Studios has yet to match. Additionally, Blue Beetle features rising star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) in the leading role as Jaime, and this movie could go a long way toward making Maridueña into a box office draw.

Jaime is a college graduate who unwittingly receives one of the most powerful weapons in the universe: a sentient alien Scarab (voiced by Becky G) that has its own mind, and the ability to bond with its host. The Scarab also bestows incredible powers including an exoskeleton and weapons that can be shaped and created from the imagination of the user. If Jaime and the Scarab can get on the same page then they could become a force for good. But first, they have to elude Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon), a malevolent businesswoman who wants the Scarab's power for herself.
