DC villains Bane and Deathstroke are getting their own movie

Bane and Deathstroke from DC Comics.

Comic book fans would be the first to tell you that the only thing that Bane and Deathstroke have in common is that they are both villains in the DC Universe. But now, this unlikely pairing of bad guys are heading to the big screen together.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios is developing a Bane and Deathstroke movie, and a screenwriter has already been lined up. Matthew Orton, who worked on the reshoots of Captain America: Brave New World, will be writing the project.

Bane is an established Batman villain who first appeared in live action in a throwaway role in 1997’s Batman and Robin. He was better utilized in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, when Tom Hardy took over the role. Deathstroke has only appeared in a single movie before, when Joe Manganiello made a cameo appearance as Slade Wilson in Justice League. Ben Affleck’s original script for The Batman reportedly featured Manganiello’s Deathstroke as the villain, and there was even talk that the character would get his own movie as well.

A team-up between these two characters doesn’t seem very likely because they tend to have different goals. Deathstroke is a mercenary for hire and Bane is a mastermind with ambition. Barring the presence of any superheroes in this movie, the most likely way to utilize these characters is to pit them against each other. That may also mean making one of them the antihero of the film.

There’s currently no director attached to the Bane and Deathstroke movie, nor is it connected to Matt Reeves’ Batman film universe, which includes The Penguin series currently running on HBO and Max. Assuming this movie goes forward, it’s still a few years away.

5 actors who should play Swamp Thing
Derek Mears as Swamp Thing in "Swamp Thing."

Over five decades ago, comic book creators Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson unleashed Swamp Thing, one of the most iconic horror characters in the DC universe. The comic introduced a scientist named Alec Holland who had created a Bio-Restorative formula that was meant to help end world hunger. Unfortunately, Alec was attacked by saboteurs who murdered his wife Linda and left him for dead after rigging his lab to explode. But Alec's mind and memories survived thanks to his formula, which transformed him into the elemental creature that we call Swamp Thing.

A Nightmare on Elm Street's Wes Craven wrote and directed the first Swamp Thing movie in 1982, which featured Ray Wise as Holland and Dick Durock as Swamp Thing. Durock reprised his role in The Return of Swamp Thing and in the subsequent Swamp Thing TV series in 1990. Aside from a Swamp Thing reboot series in 2019, the character has been largely absent from the live-action realm. However, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced that there's a new Swamp Thing movie in the works for the upcoming DCU. Additionally, Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold is likely to write and direct the film.

3 reasons why Blue Beetle is the worst DCEU movie
Xolo Maridueña in Blue Beetle.

If you were hoping that Blue Beetle would be the film that turned around DC's fortunes after severe missteps in Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and The Flash, then you're going to be disappointed. Despite some good intentions behind it, Blue Beetle lands with a thud and it somehow manages to come off badly even when compared to the two DC films that came out earlier this year.

This is truly disappointing because there are things that Blue Beetle got right, including casting Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña in the title role. Maridueña is really great as Jaime Reyes, and he seems destined to headline bigger and better films. Additionally, the Blue Beetle costume itself looks great and it's very true to the spirit of the way the Scarab looks and operates in the comics.

Is Blue Beetle streaming?
Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle.

This week, Jaime Reyes joins Miles Morales as one of the few superheroes created in this century to get their own feature film on the big screen. Blue Beetle also has the distinction of being the first Latino DC hero to hold down his own film, a milestone that Marvel Studios has yet to match. Additionally, Blue Beetle features rising star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) in the leading role as Jaime, and this movie could go a long way toward making Maridueña into a box office draw.

Jaime is a college graduate who unwittingly receives one of the most powerful weapons in the universe: a sentient alien Scarab (voiced by Becky G) that has its own mind, and the ability to bond with its host. The Scarab also bestows incredible powers including an exoskeleton and weapons that can be shaped and created from the imagination of the user. If Jaime and the Scarab can get on the same page then they could become a force for good. But first, they have to elude Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon), a malevolent businesswoman who wants the Scarab's power for herself.
