Check out Laverne Cox and company in first trailer for the "Rocky Horror" TV movie

No need to jump to the left or step to the right in order to get a peek at the upcoming remake of Rocky Horror Picture Show, because FOX has released the first, official trailer for the film set to air on the television network in October.

Not only does the trailer offer an early look at Orange is the New Black actress Laverne Cox as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, but it also reveals a cameo from the film’s original eccentric doc, Tim Curry. Oh, and there’s a great nod to the movie’s audience-interactive history, too.

Directed by Kenny Ortega (Hocus Pocus, Newsies), the remake also stars Victoria Justice and Ryan McCartan as Janet and Brad, respectively, with musician Adam Lambert in the role of Eddie, Reeve Carney (Penny Dreadful) as Riff Raff, Staz Nair as Rocky, Annaleigh Ashford as Columbia, and Christina Milian as Magenta. Curry will portray the film’s narrator character, known as “The Criminologist.”

The official synopsis for the film reads as follows:

The Rocky Horror Picture Show follows sweethearts Janet and Brad, who stumble upon Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s bizarre abode. Frank-N-Furter, a sexually ambiguous, flirtatious alien mad-scientist – with the help of his faithful servants, Riff Raff and Magenta – is holding an annual, Transylvanian science convention to showcase the birth of “Rocky Horror”  – a fit, attractive man created solely to fulfill Frank’s desires.

The film is the network’s follow-up to its successful Grease Live! which aired in January and was received well by critics and television audiences. Both NBC and FOX have found success with bringing musicals and popular stage productions to the small screen over the last few years, with NBC producing both The Sound of Music Live! and Peter Pan Live! in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show will air at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 20.

Bowser attacks in The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s first trailer
super mario bros movie first trailer bowser

Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment finally gave us our first glimpse at the animated Mario movie, which is officially titled The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The trailer reveal came during New York Comic Con and got a special Nintendo Direct of its own.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie Nintendo Direct kicks off with an introduction from Shigeru Miyamoto, Chris Meledandri, Chris Pratt, and Jack Black, who confirmed that the animation will be complete next week, although there are still other things to do, and hyped up the trailer. The trailer itself begins with Bowser attacking a city of Penguins before cutting to Mario finding himself in the Mushroom Kingdom and going on an adventure with Toad. We even see a little bit of Luigi at the end.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie | Official Teaser Trailer
Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment -- the Universal Pictures animation studio known for creating Despicable Me, Sing, and The Secret Life of Pets -- first announced a movie based on the iconic Super Mario Bros. video game series in 2018. While series creator Shigeru Miyamoto was a producer on the film from the start and Nintendo acquired a film studio during this movie's production, the announcement that really turned heads was the September 2021 Nintendo Direct, where its shocking all-star cast was revealed.
During its segment in that Direct, we learned that Chris Pratt is Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy is Princess Peach, Charlie Day is Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key is Toad, Seth Rogan is Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen is Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson is Kamek, Sebastian Maniscalco is Foreman Spike, and Jack Black is Bowser. They all felt like odd choices at the time of the announcement, and from this trailer, we learned what Kamek, Bowser, Mario, Toad, and Luigi will all sound like.
While The Super Mario Bros. Movie was originally going to come out this year, you can now expect the animated feature to hit theaters on April 7, 2023 in the United States and April 28, 2023 in Japan.

Smile review: A cruelly scary studio horror movie
Caitlin Stasey smiles, unnervingly.

The alarm has been tripped. The backdoor is wide open. And who or whatever’s impersonating the security-system operator on the other end of the phone line has just croaked three words that no horror movie character would ever want to hear: “Look behind you.” The command puts Rose (Sosie Bacon), the increasingly petrified heroine of Smile, between a rock and a hard place. She has to look, even if every fiber of her being would rather not. And so does the audience. We’re locked into her campfire crucible, forced to follow the hesitant backward tilt of her gaze, and the anticipatory creep of a camera that’s slow to reveal what that disembodied voice has invited her (and us) to discover.

Smile is full of moments like this. It’s a nasty, diabolically calibrated multiplex scream machine — the kind of movie that sends ripples of nervous laughter through packed theaters, the kind that marionettes the whole crowd into a synchronized dance routine of frazzled nerves and spilled popcorn. Turn up your nose, if you must, at the lowly cheap sting of a jump scare. Smile gives that maligned device a workout for the ages. It rattles with aplomb.
